the n64 controller cutout part is an attachment, that area where it is attached to the remote looking controller is also used to plugin a generic console controller. the initial controller is just to be innovative and new. also, playing with just the remote part is possible because the remote is actually sensitive to how you move it. so like you don't ever really use d-pad you just rest your index on the tigger button on the back and the thumb across the a/b and small a/b, and you move the actual controller to move yourself/crosshairs
