Your dvd player is probably old or cheap. Good ones will play anything.

Well there are certain formats that some DVD players can or cannot read. Depends on if you want to make a VCD (and save a DVD) or the file is too big and has to be on DVD. I think video has to be in MPEG2 and AC3 or PCM (an uncompressed .wav) for audio for a DVD. There are numerous guides and programs on the internet that you can do this with. Depending on the quality of the program, resolution and clarity of the video you have and the amount of work you put into it, the quality of DVD will vary.

it depends on your dvd player check out

some will play everything like my philips dvp642, it can play svcd, vcd, even divx. Most of those types of players are pretty cheap around the 30-50 dollar range so if you have alot of movies in different formats its worth the buy.
