Depends alot on your race if your hume,mithra,taru you need all the HP you can get. While elvaans and galka can put on alittle more +enmity in place of that HP gear. I have tanked quite a few wyrms, hnms on my friends name and if I get march i try to go all enmity+, if your not getting march should toss on some haste gear maybe byakko pants, dusk gloves, fumas. This is his enmity gear set up.

We use SMNs as main source of damage for Tiamat/Jorm, so personally I don't use very much enmity (+17) but I'm able to get my HP up pretty high (~1700 after food as a hume). Mages pull hate a bit earliar then in a full enmity setup, but it's not like it it'll kill them. Afterall, a mage should only pull hate when the Wyrm is in the air (As that's where basically all tank hate loss is, being hit for 250-300 damage over and over again whereas mages have to continue to cure that up). They have to /shutdown earliar then in enmity gear, but that's a lot better then a dead tank.

I think Mdn is right on in the comments about enmity merits.

As far as I've ever been able to tell, enmity merits are like HQ gear... When all is said and done, -3 enmity won't save a BLM's life every time. +3 enmity won't keep hate on a tank every time. A piece of HQ gear won't make your character that much better either...

...yet when you stack HQs, and you stack merits, and you proliferate that kind of extra edge to a lot of people in the fight, things go more smoothly, and you can tell a difference.

Enmity+3 on a BLM from merits might get a BLM killed some of the time, but a BLM can die or relog to erase hate. A NIN has no comparable easy-way-out.

The man is obviously built to tank. There is a threshold with hate. And the more enmity you have, the more your BLMs and Melee can push that threshold. More enmity = more nukes/damage = faster kill = less of your life wasted. That shit adds up too. A little here, and a little there, and poof, you got +15 enmity which is pretty damn significant.

Its like that for every job, no one piece of HQ equipment or one merit is going to make or break a fight or how well you do. But when you get lots of HQ gear, and lots of merits you can tell how well you are doing compared to the people that are not doing those things.

Beastly Earring because I used to be a hardcore Bard, until I got a Dalmatica Abj and drama happened and I almost quit bard forever.

Though the evasion+5 on it saves me from ever having to shell out massive gil for an elusive.

I've thought about buying some Triumph Earrings for solo, but not sure I want to lose the evasion.

I use Unji and Unsho and on my DoT has become better than my Fudo+Senj setup. Was it worth the +25m more price than the Fudo+Senj combo? Most likely not, but being one, or the top DD NIN of you're server ain't bad could be worth it.
Senj+Fudo comes close to my Unji+Unsho, depends on your setup and merits sometimes but I prefer Senj+Fudo. If you have trouble tanking any HNM and need to use mamas+1, you're just not ready. They don't go off on anything hard, only thing they work on is Amikiri at the best.

Someone mentioned that they needed to use mamas+1 on cassie cause they go off 70% of the time? They don't even go off that much in EXP pt. Cassie is a very easy to duo mob for NIN, so 2 things wrong with that picture.

As for tanking Byakko without a staff, that's... very interesting.
I tried skilling my parry but it never happens, I'm at 191 and been tanking HNMs from Nidhogg to all the CoP wyrms and yet to see skillups.
Doin capped airship CoP missions made my skillup go up like crazy and soloing as THF(i dunno why, they have such a high base evasion).

as for +HP +enmity in tanking. You use haste on gods(how can you lose hate on these). +HP on all CoP wyrms except Vrtra. They hit for 200-300 in air and can hit you for up to 600 a crit hit so having 1800+HP as a hume is nice.
I was tanking side by side with a NIN with a mithra NIN who had 1300HP, about 20-30 enmity while I had about 1700HP as hume NIN with like 9enmity. I would make tiamat turn to me with a single debuff spell. Since my high HP and the new hate losing system. I believe I lose less hate per blink than a person with less HP because of % damage that I should be taking(like a PLD). in air, when it hits through blinks, it definately shows that I can hold hate because 290dmg out of 1700+ is a small fraction but 290 from 1300 is close to a 4th of the HP thus more enmity loss.

when ur kiting, obviously +enmity all the way. you have less debuffing time for hate and you are takin less dmg to none so +HP isnt a problem.

i'm thinking of maybe trying haste setup on tiamat again. the double double-attacks that tiamat likes to do takes a ninja's blink down quick..

You obviously haven't tried to duo Cassie using 2 characters on one PC, while gilsellers are cure bombing and stealing it from you, it's not that easy.

And I haven't ever done 1.3k blade: jin, does it mean it's not possible?

You can duo tank cassie no problem in -eva equips and all dd/str equips. Using all dd katanas would work fine since hes the easiest NM to tank in the game.
