finaly got around to doing this. i went 1/20 on trade ins, still have 20 moer marlins.

i fished up about 40 in a night (albeight long night) took *forever* to get pirates for sand charm so i just kept fishing. used mithran rod and slice of bluetail on ship at level 51+4

A 100% Evisceration is not all that different than a 300% Evisceration. You will maybe have a 100 damage difference, which would be silly when you could have used it 3 times instead.

I'm leveling SMR to 20 just for this bcnm. Astral Flow took two that it hit down to 30%. A second will kill them. The third member, John, is coming as BLM to sleep the third if it isn't killed in the second astral flow.

However, Teepo, I'm always open to suggestion. I'd love to hear your strategy, since mine will work - but isn't the most challenging. It's just a nuke fest.

2 Astral Flows kill the crab and kraken. The Sahagin still lives and will be in the middle of hundred fists... 3rd is a 10 second fight.

It would work fine with two astral flows (Diamond Dusts obviously) and SMNs send the pet on the Sahagin and the BLM nukes that mob with their strongest spell at that time.

We used Diamond dust personally... But I think Ice or thunder would be fine. Atleast use two Astral Flows to kill crab and kraken. Any third job that can do a good burst damage (WAR with Raging Axe/BLM with Thunder (?) or a 3rd SMN that targets the Sahagin for AF) would be fine.

Where to begin

I've personally spent over 112 Hours Fishing/Buying/Trading/Fighting over this quest.

I've personally put Bhefmel Marlins on the Jeuno AH as a commodity, because before me, there was NO one buying them, and no one willing to carry non-stackable fish back to jeuno for a minimal 10k each fee, when you can only list 7 at a time, and again NO one buys them from AH but me. Marlins didnt even start readily becoming available on Siren's Jeuno AH until after a week of myself fishing on the boat, Buying every single marlin off the NPC on the boat, that anyone would sell to clear up space, and because i'd be paying like 8k each from NPC, i started shouting on every boat ride {Bhefmel Marlin}{Sell?} 10k {Each}.. after week of this, I had a army of NA & JP fishers who do nothing but fish me Marlin for hours a day. And the ones I didnt directly work with, who werent also doing this quest, would no longer NPC them, but indeed use the Jeuno AH, and wait for me to buy them.

I've traded 992 Bhefmel Marlins. (my guess is about 33% fished / 66% purchased overall)

I've recieved 27 Pirates Charts.

I've recieved 4 Brigand's Charts (I keep them in Mog Safe, so when I spam marlin, i cant get another, thus only allowing Pirates)

I've fought the Pirates Charts 26 Times (i have my 27th Chart on me, at the time of post)

I've won 22 Times ( 4 losses due to people's 2hr's not being available, dumb mistakes, timeouts etc )

I've recieved 19 Albrotross Rings (15+ Dropped due to no one wanting, 3 times I've won the BC and didnt get the ring)

Other Items:
Arrowood Logs
Misc Garbage Fish
Salinator
Dwarf Pugil and the other (ex) bait for Ebinsu Rod (which this isnt a truely great source of, if you wanted the Ebinsu Rod you wouldnt spend 10k a fish on marlin for a 5% chance at a Pirates Chart, for a 10-20% chance at this bait, when you can get it from another fish directly)

And thats it....

No Dagger... Not one...

My Stats:
992 Marlin = 27 Charts = [35marlin/per Chart] = 3.5% overall
26 Fights = 0 Daggers = [0 daggers/chart] = 0.0% overall

I've had some good luck turning in marlins, where I would have like 48-60 marlin built up on mule's stash. And in the process get (3) Charts out of that one stash.

I've had some very bad luck turning in marlins, my longest streak ever was 99... on my 99th straight trade w/o a chart i finally recieved my 20th Pirates chart... Two other bad streaks were 87 and 83. Combine those (3) bad streaks = (269) of my (922) Marlin were bad streaks for just 3 charts.

Over all my time, research, and investment in to doing this...

I believe the Marlin to Chart ratio is 5%, particularly good on New & Full Moons, and like someone mention'd i agree very bad on Windsday. Maybe decent on lightning day.

From seeing less then a handful of the dagger across all servers so far, I also believe the drop rate of the dagger to be around 5%.

Now take a second and think about this, going with those numbers..

*IF* Marlin > Chart = 5% or 0.05

*IF* Chart > Dagger = 5% or 0.05

THEN --> The odds of getting a dagger per Fish are:
0.05 * 0.05 = 0.0025 (twenty-five thousands of a chance per fish)

Take that 0.0025 , and to Factor the probility to *brute force* a drop on the dagger would take 40,000 Bhefmel Marlin for a 100% chance @ dagger.

I've gotten some decent drops off it, and a friend of mine confirmed to get dynamis money. Sure, its not much, but its better than "SORRY I FOUND NOTHING LOL, HERES 150g FOR YOUR 10k FISH".

i'm not interested in the consolation prize of the Brigands Chart. so you can get silver/gold/plat beastcoins.. whoopie... Dynamis Coins, i havent seen any confirmation myself on this, but even so, i dont care for a few single dynamis coins either.

I'm not walking my ass out to Bubu everytime i get one of these just to free up that Inv slot. IMHO If you want to focus on Merc.Kris, dont waste your time with Brigands Chart.

heh, its confirmed currency comes from those boxes you fish up. yo ucan also call for help the mobs and have someone else kill them for you since youre capped.

for me, i just started this recently. i fished up 40 marlins over last weekend and turned in 20 and got a chart. 0/1 on merc kris. traded 20 more marlins with nothing so i spent yesterday fishing marlins for a couple hours. i fished up 25. after 4 trades i got another pirate map. think of it has 2-4 hours per attempt at the fight. i went blm/smn/smn and my blm died right away because smn didnt 2 hour fast enough, i and 2nd smn died and last one killed the sahagin. not sure why one smn died. they both came naked too. if i brought a couple high pots to keep me alive until their 2 hour there'd be no death.

fished up a mithran snare but didnt get to use it with astral flow method.

i 1/3 on peacock charm yesterday (1/1 on my first ever attempt, but next 2 didnt drop). so this cant be worse in terms of luck. ive heard some shitty rates and ive heard good decent ones. if it takes me 30 attempts so be it. it's fun. i still skillup on marlins anyway.

Well, I did that 27th Fight.. No dagger..

And JUST when I was about to give up this fucking quest...

And my total was 992 Marlin turned in, with 9 Marlin left on my mule. I dropped one Marlin just out of spite to have even #1000.. and started trading my last 8 marlin in to Zaldon to finish me off at 1000 fish, 10M gil invested... No surprises he paid me 8 x 150gil, and sent me on my way.

Ok so I'm done!!!

Wait No... whats this... One of my newest JP fishing buddys who just got his LuShangs yesterday walks in to the Guild Shop as I'm updating my bazaar stats on my mule to 1000 Fish = 27 Charts = 0 Daggers = {/goodbye} {Dream}

He informs me he just got his 5th Pirates Chart, and has 2 Marlin left over, but Oh No he broke his new Lu Shangs Rod... I explain to him, that I'm done with the quest, that I had to draw a line @ 1000 fish 27 charts, but my mule does have 103 Woodworking and i'd be happy to fix his rod for him.

I fix his rod, and in appreciation, he hands me his last 2 Marlin in gratitude. (I only met this guy 2 days ago, we've exchanged a handfull of comments back and forth, and i've bought like 60 of his surplus marlin) Yet he trusted me with his newly aquired 10M gil valued Rod. Good thing i'm not so pissed off at my 10M dumped in to this quest... that umm. yeah.. I R not {Thief}^^

Because the 2nd of the two fish he gave me yielded a 28th Pirates Chart^^

Lets hope the karma continues forward when I fight this next one.

No... No it doesnt^^ Define "decent chunk" Because after 10Mil in Marlin traded to Zaldon for 0.15M returned is a 9.85M difference...

Not to mention, do you understand, without ANY doubt, exactly how the forumla for turning in fish versus reward works? I know I dont.

i.e. You trade a Marlin to Zaldon. . . What happens next?

----Check to see if it's a Brigands Chart
------If Yes, Check inventory to make sure rare/ex isnt already there

------If Yes, Check inventory to make sure rare/ex isnt already there
------If Yes, drop the Pirates Chart and Say nothing found.

Or.. What If Zaldon just rolls a number between 0-1000
--0-949 = Nothing
--950 - 974 = Brigands Chart (But then check to see rare/ex)
--975 - 999 = Pirates Chart (But then check to see rare/ex)

Who knows? S.E.'s developers who wrote that specific foruma for this specific quest... And thats about it... Unless someone else has done studies with and without various Charts in the inventory, and done identical comparisons with a friend turning in the same amount of fish at the same times/moons, only varation being weither or not they had charts in thier inventory, and considering we're talking about a formula that already set at a low 5% chance would have any real clue.

That being said... ALL I care about is the Merc. Dagger, thus ALL I care about is the Pirates Chart, and the ONLY relevance or attention I pay to Brigands Chart is because it's a nusiance in my way of obtaining more Pirates Charts.

I'm not trying to discredit your recommendation of making some gil on the side doing Brigand runs, But thats a recommendation that only applys to much less dedicated, and much more casual people trying this quest. Anyone who has put the time & money I have in to this quest, has one single focus... The Dagger..

The effort and very minimal rewards we're talking about from Brigands run carry no weight in a long term *Brute Force* approach costing Millions upon Millions of Gil to aquire this rare and precious dagger.
