The bottom line answer to the original question is:
Yes. More melee = more TP. The biggest mistake that young LSes make on Fafnir/Nidhogg is putting in more melee to fill out an alliance. They get overwhelmed with TP moves because every melee they add gives Faf more TP, and requires more MP to be healed after every wing.
In terms of the phalanx thing, yea, phalanx isn't going to help your damage reduction siginifcantly for wings. As someone posted already, phalanx is most effective on small amounts of damage, such as fighting MNK mobs, or multiple EPs at once. Since it's based off your enhancing skill only, a 53 RDM would not be as effective as a 75 BLM/RDM.
I don't see why this thread existed past the first page.
Yeah, it is a good principle to follow in a lot of fights. For example when I tank any mob that uses TP moves that isn't Auto-TP I make anyone who could be possibly weak sit back and not do anything because of the useless TP they'll give. Charybdis is a good example, it's safer for a NIN to solo him with a WHM and BRD backup then it is for him to fight it with 4 other Melee beating on it.
I still think what you have to handle it is more important than worrying if you're giving him TP or not. If everyone is sub WHM then feel free to beat on him, but if you have only a few mages, safe and slow.

All this dmg talk reminds me of the time I went to the first or second ever kb pop on bahamut and I died without ever seeing wtf killed me/how much dmg I took.
damn memories.
Next fafnir I do, i'm gonna tank it war/nin with a GA 8)
You might be true on certain aspects of melee not knowing their place. On Fafnir you throw 2 SAMs and 5-6 BLMs = 6minute death.Originally Posted by Xavier

When you consider that a one handed weapon is giving 8-9 tp to the mob per swing, it is noticeable. 10 rounds of melee hits will basically give a guaranteed 100 tp, which the mob may or may not use. Depending on how many melees you have, this can take seconds.Originally Posted by Orfeo
It's of course a bit different on a mob with auto-tp since they gain tp really fast anyway, but I think a "standard" alliance could easily see twice as many tp moves as a manaburn/summonfest depending on how many melees they have engaged.
An experienced and well balanced group won't have much trouble with spam, but an inexperienced bunch of noobs might.
