1/91 is approximately equal to 11/1000
gawd people.
I can't believe this thread is getting hung up on a math issue.
.01% is 1%.
Quite a few people apparently don't understand percentages.
First off, starting with the original post, looking at drop 1 as an example
without THF's Knife, he got a 20% (rounded) drop rate, meaning if he did another 100 kills, he would get 20 drops.
with THF's Knife, he got a 21% drop rate, meaning if he did another 100 kills, he would get 21 drops (give or take a little because there is always variation due to each drop being decided separately).
For Arlania's benefit, .001 = .1%, percentages are delt with as fractions of a whole (1). 90% = .9, etc. Taking percentages out of Kuponut's analysis, it'd be
1/1000 = 0.001
0.01+0.001 = 0.011
1/91 = 0.011 (when rounded XD)
And for Chumbelina's sake, adding 1% to the drop rate means that if you killed 100 times, it'd drop 1 extra time. However I can see how this might be confusing, because if you said it slightly differently, say adjusting the drop rate by 1%, this could also be interpreted as saying:
the drop rate is 20%, adjust it by 1% of it's current drop rate, so that the drop rate is now 20% + 1%*20% (or .01 * 20%) = 20.2%
However, since this is confusing when talking about statistics and percentages, I've never met anyone who tried to describe a statistic in this last sense.
Well, my original hypothesis about the effect of Thief's Knife was come up with by simply looking at the numbers.
No Knife: 19.86%
Knife: 20.98%
No Knife: 9.01%
Knife: 10.00%
Looking at this, it just looks like you add the number 1 to the percentage. Sure, there are a million (actually an infinite to be technical) number of formulas f(x) where
f(20%) = 21%
f(9%) = 10%
but a very obvious one is f(x) = x+1. That's why I hypothesized it. Point is simply that if that is really the way it works, the 1% is more powerful than you think it is. In particular, it turns a 1/1000 drop rate into a 1/91 drop rate, and it turns a 1/50 drop rate into a 1/33 drop rate. Math and percentages can have subtle effects, that's why it's so fun![]()
well now that you put it f(x) = x+1
I understand it.
See? I did learn SOMETHING this year... my bad for making two 39's, a 55, 70 and then giving up before the final exam.. lol
It is the same reason why a paladin won't exp with an earth staff but uses an earth staff for HNMs. 20% damage reduction on stuff that hits for 90 isn't worth losing your sword. However, when you're tanking stuff like tiamat that hits for about 300~(not a paladin just an estimate) 20% can save your ass, and the mp of white mages.
I thought Paladin used Sword in experience party so that they could use a shield and get Shield Skill ups!Originally Posted by Flarega
Serious question, did you have signet during any of this, and do you think signet has any effect on non-crystal drops?
I imagine I probably had signet sometimes, and not others. Hopefully that doesn't Affect the results![]()
from my experience, th does better getting more drops from a mob than getting the 'rare/soughtafter' drops.
i dont' think that knife is really going to give "Treasure hunter III" - its a 1% or w/e on top of THII trait. if it were a real new level of TH... man would that be valuable.
Knife is 70M on my server.Originally Posted by Sidd

time to sell my knife.

I've always been curious about something when it comes to treasure hunter.
Most job traits, when you reach a level that improves it, there isn't an added listing in the menu. For Fast cast for instance, you don't get Fast cast I, fast cast II, fast cast III etc... you just have one ability called Fast Cast, which happens to improve. Or for Kick attacks on Mnk, you just simple get Kick attacks, not Kick attacks I at 51 and Kick attacks II at 71, the ability at 71 just enhances the rate at which you Kick.
With TH however..in your job trait menu, you have both Treasure hunter I and Treasure hunter II. That to me say's that they affect different things, and are not just improving one another. On that same note, i wonder which of those two TH+x affects, or both?
I only have a level 67 thief(not my highest job) but i have spent more hours camping NM's than i care to remember, as well as farming one particular type of mob.
Pre r/e patch changing leaping boots i camped LL religiously, as did a good friend of mine. I had THII, he only had THI, we both had well over 250 kills on LL and i had 22 pairs of boots drop and he had over 30( don't know his exact count). I find that curious since i had THII and he had THI only. This leads me to believe that THII has no effect on the rarety of items, but how many common items drop.
Edit: just want to mention i'm not sure if this means anything, my brother got over 20 pairs of boots in under 100 kills, but he also has the best luck with NM drops of anyone i've ever known in game. 1/1 pallas, 1/10 thf knife, 5/15? o.kotes etc...he's just really lucky.
Which brings me to the mob i farmed, Rams. Rams are very good for testing TH because the number of drops they have. I spent a large amount of time farming rams without TH at all on my mnk, with THI on my mnk and with THII on my thief. Killing rams w/o any TH at all would usually get me 1-2 hides and rarely 1 horn. Killing with THI would get me usually 2-4 hides and 1-2 horn, and THII would usually cap me at the number of drops usually 1-2 horns and 3-5 hides. I didn't record over the period of time that i farmed but that was generally the pattern of the drops.
Anyway, i've always been very curious about TH and the reason that the levels of it are listed separately. And i think that testing your results since you have all capacity's of TH at your disposal on something like rams might help.
Its all in the eye of the beholder
I sure as hell know i didn't get 6 ro'maeve water in an hour before i had TH4. (yes, 6 in 1hr)
