Difference is, even what starts out as an Alla topic (who the fuck thinks of "your first MB" and actually decides to make a topic out of it) is USUALLY assimilated and derailed into another more interesting topic, like the one discussed atm. That is still one saving grace of BG Forums that you wouldnt have on Alla. If this was Alla, this would be page 5 with 250 replies and people would still be talking about their first MB.

Good old days of before PS2 release, no one knew what the hell was going on.

Dark Knights were considered uber.
Ninja/Thief was considered an acceptable combination.
Monks were hated as much as Dragoons are today.
Pentaspam was the way to go
WAR was just a subjob
Elemental staves were a rarity, not the norm.

Elemental staves were not added with PS2 release. Here is the history of elemental staves to my best recollection.

Long long time ago, in the ages of dinosaurs, nobody had elemental staves. BLM was a very shitty job because of it (trufax), Maat (blm and rdm) was hard as hell, doing anything magic based was difficult, and just saying you have NQ dark and ice in your comment was the equivalent of saying you had chram and other super uber gear (im not a melee lol) that nobody else had. And then came gardening changes, people were able to grow ores. I also think they upped the amount of ores that could be dug with choco. The only way to get them before that was zilart beastman bc60s, and the ore you got was random. Stuff like vulcans only had 2 sales in the history when I was done with blm. Now if you dont have hq staves at 51 you're gimp.

It was the ps2 release update patch that did this, and slowly dark and ice staves started to appear, as they were easy to get now. Eventually the price got low enough for people to try to HQ and other ores were being gotton as well and eventually we are were we are now. Of course SE really nerfed HQ rate on staves because I believe SE didn't intend for everyone to have full HQ staves and stuff.

Flash, on Fusion... as I tanked in an XP party... as WHM.

Which leads back to the "good old days" topic....

I got the game at NA release, and leveled up pretty fast til around 55 or so when I started to slow down and look at other jobs and stuff. I was one of about 3 or 4 NA WHMs that I can remember at my level range... and was kinda far ahead of most people level wise... and I had a really crappy static in the 40s. PLD, PLD, NIN (before they were considered tanks), WHM, and two pickups... usually a RDM and sometimes a BLM.

I was a melee WHM.

And sadly, my damage was pretty much on par with everyone elses. Our skillchain was usually Red Lotus Blade (PLD) > Seraph Strike (WHM) for Fusion. We had one PLD tank, and the other use STR rings and Berserk for damage. The NIN didn't have Utsusemi that I remember, and if he did, he didn't use it. The mobs were Spiders and Beetles in Quicksand Caves... each fight lasting several minutes. My Seraph Strikes routinely pulled hate.

Anyway, we're fighting along and the tanking PLD somehow takes an 800+ damage Sickle Slash. Dead. Back up PLD uses Red Lotus Blade instead of using Provoke. On instinct, I use Seraph Strike. Skillchain. Oh crap, I have hate and Stoneskin is down. I cast Flash. Magic Burst. The other PLD decides to "LOL" instead of Provoke. I cast Stoneskin, and then Blink. Somehow, I kept it going for a good 3 minutes or so, until I too ate a 800+ Sickle Slash on Stoneskin recast, ending my heroic run as tank. The other PLD and NIN promptly died trying to play hero while the other mages ran for the zone.

Some JP guy got a Kirin's Osode. People mobbed the poor guy checking him like crazy.

I used to think "Genbu" was the japanese word for "Adamantoise".

I thought Simurgh and Roc dropped the pop items for Suzaku.

After seeing a video of an EARLY Fafnir attempt, I thought his 2000+ damage AoE (Spike Flail) meant he was impossible to kill unless you had... 2000+ HP.

I used to think "White Name" mean NA Player and "Blue Name" meant JP player.

I got signet. I thought the grey-bluish spot on my screen was my monitor messing up.

Someone casted Shell on me. I thought it was Bio.

When we went on our first Magicked Skull hunt, I tried to cast Curaga on a bunch of skeletons at once. I was mad when I couldn't.

I remember begging some JP paladin to cast "Life" on my fallen party members.

After I got the spell "Raise" I tried to cast it on a Wight. I was pissed when I couldn't.

We actually tried to XP in places besides the dunes from 10-19... I remember trying Palborough and Pashhow... both times we got massacred.

Vowing to return to Valkurm Dunes as a level 50 WHM and with the intent of *DESTROYING* everything.

I remember Yuhtunga Jungle zone only having one party (mine!) Everyone else was leveling off Acrophies.

I remember first stepping into Garlaige, EVERYONE was camped at the zone, everyone would be afraid of going past the bottom of the steps. (Kinda like today, but with no high levels!)

I met the original people that played the characters when I first started the game (in Tahrongi and Horutoto Ruins etc). I saw them a few months later, always in Delfkutt's Tower. Tried talking to them and realized they weren't the original players I knew anymore.
