We need a Cold War again!!!

Seriously....we need a Cold War. This would solve all the worlds problems. When the US and the USSR where "at odds" in the 80's..things were great. Economy was good, no one got out of line for fear they might set one of us off. It was great.

And we all know it was fake. The US and USSR sipped vodka behind closed doors and planned how they were gonna keep this going. We capture a spy, they shoot down a plane. Just enough to keep the world scared..even though both sides knew nothing was gonna happen.

Then the Soviet Union dissolved...and the world went to shit. Granted, the end of communism in Eastern Europe was great for those that lived there...but lets face it...it made the rest of the world all crazy.

If I were president...I would be on the phone to China right now:

Me: Hey..we need to start some shit before the world goes to hell in a hand basket.

China: I agree....things are getting out of hand.

Me: How about I send some fighters to blow up something useless...like a toolshed.

China: hmmm..sounds good. We will claim its an orphanage/puppy farm/convent.

    Me: nice.

China: then we will retaliate by sinking an un-manned fishing boat.

Me: Perfect...I'll call it a Naval Research vessel..and the whole crew was killed.

China: I just remembered..we got a white guy set to be executed for molesting dead animals..not sure he is american.

Me: Who cares....Ill claim he is a delegate or sometihing.

Me: This is a good start...but we are gonna need some major military action to scare the world shitless.

China: I know...but not sure what we can do.

Me: I know....pick some pissant island in the south pacific...invade it...and park a bunch of nukes there.

China: Sounds good...but moving nukes could be a logistical nightmare.

Me: No worries. Just say you did...and the US will confirm its true.

    China: and the US response.

Me: I'll send some warships down there and act all bad ass. Then we claim to have a miltiary clash in South Korea. Then we both go to the media and claim the other is the root of all evil and threaten nuclear action if the other does not back down.

China: Great. Still on for tennis next week.

Me: Sure. Give your wife my best.

    China: I will. Take care.

    Me: good bye.

Even though this is partly a joke, I agree that ending the Cold War was a big mistake. The only real threat in the world are when people get restless. I'd like to point out though that the "War on Terror" is going to be to the 21st century what the Cold War was to the 20th. This invisible threat that keeps everyone alert but hopefully never amounts to anything.

look at the debt your country has....you want another cold war?

I am pretty sure that debt did not come from education, healthcare, or taking care of the homeless

    I could be wrong though!!

The debt has come due to actual war... Not cold war.

not to mention that debt is good for a country's growth (not as much as we have but some debt). And it's not like we are the only country in debt.. so many countries still owe us money *coughEnglandcough*

defense spending is just one part of government spending and government spending doesn't make up much of our economy compared to the services sector, and it's also arguably a black hole for resources.

the idea that things get "out of hand" unless there's some kind of tension between opposing forces is a silly ontological fallacy. windows don't need to be broke in order for money to be made, people will find something to spend money on, like entertainment. new things will be invented and people will "need" them; phones, ipods, psps, drugs. fuck war, we can (and do) have tons of scientific and technological advances without war.

we need to be making computers powerful enough to simulate complex organisms like humans, or even entire ecological habitats or planets (no more product testing on mice, you can speed up the program and watch the effects of minute amounts of plastic coming off in our food that we store in plastic over the span of 50-100 years, on a human rather than any old mammal, and test the effects of various genetically engineered foods). we need to develop the capacity to win the war against disease, bacteria, parasites, etc. we need to figure out how to travel astronomical distances and colonize other planets. fuck fighting each other, we have plenty of other shit out there that threatens our existence and we need to get our fucking act together and stop being our own worst enemy so we can concentrate on better things

edit: oh yeah, and also consider that medical/agricultural advancements can help us feed the world with less and less input. it's better for us all if nobody out there is dying of hunger or disease. and we need alternative sources of energy and so on because we're expending all of the nonrenewable resources at ever-increasing speeds

Screw a cold war, we just need another videogame crash. All this XBox360/PS3/Madden/EA/Sims/Sequel bullshit is getting out of hand.

And honestly, who is going to believe that we would be in a cold war with our biggest importer? All China would have to do to end it would be to cut off the flow of crap to us, this nation would be on its knees in a week.

The idea that our problems are caused by the fact we are not in a state of cold war is nothing less then silly. =)

defense spending is just one part of government spending and government spending doesn't make up much of our economy compared to the services sector, and it's also arguably a black hole for resources.
Our services sector must be freaking rich to keep up with our military budget.

Though I agree that our focus on fighting with ourselves is getting a little old now, it's still a long ways off for us. More and more people are wanting peace, but until people actually start understanding and accepting other human practices, religions, and cultures, we won't ever have it. The conflict within the US itself is getting so bad that the peace is starting to deteriorate. The division between liberal and conservate or democrat and republican needs to be addressed before we could ever try, as a country, to understand communist, monarchal, totalitarion, or parliament governments without equal or greater discrimination and disgust. Its alarming how many things people claim as bad or evil from hearsay or assumption without any knowlege and experience on the matter, and it's these things that keep us from respecting and living peacefully with the others in the world.

A good article on big bad evil communist China and why we shouldn't be so paranoid about them after all.

The funny (and unrealistic) thing about 24 is that they never show the part where he has to spend 2 months filling out paperwork and going through red tape before he can stop the terrorists from detonating a nuclear bomb under an orphanage for incredibly cute kids under 5 years old. With cancer.
