if you mean dividing Genres into sub genres, inside of the genre folder, no it can't do that. Otherwise you can personalise it as much as you want. I have a couple Genres that I have made up, and when I browse genre in iTunes or iPod they are sorted under that name.

Personally I use one of those hybrid cd/mp3 players. I burn a few good albums to a rewritable CD, and when I grow weary of it, I reburn the cd.


I had the player for like 3 years now, havent really had any problems.

So does anyone know how Zen's sort the mp3's you put into them? I never got a chance to actually listen to it but when I was playing around with my workmates iPod it was all set up in folders - is this how most mp3 players work? I'm not really looking for something as anal as sub-genres and stuff but I do want some degree of control how they're listed. If it would just give me one huge list with every mp3 listed alphabetically I don't think I'll bother.

Anyway, I've heard good things about Nomad also, and they are slick looking too, don't know how it sorts mp3s. That's my biggest problem with mp3 players.

From what I remember it has like Songs, Photos, Movies, Radio, etc. at the beginning and it has like an up and down button where you scroll through and then you choose from there (artist or just all the songs, dunno that much). It also has a recording function and when I was talking to my friend it has some good quality from the microphone (which is located on the left side) and it comes with those headphones like the Ipod.

Another thing my friend was telling me about was how you don't need to refresh it (dunno) but he was saying you can just connect it to the computer and then choose what songs you want on and what songs you want deleted. sounds pretty primary to store/delete but he said something strange about Ipod's deleting everything. I was trying to pay attention in class that day too, but I forgot what we learned (except to add -te to the end of a verb to make it sound polite)... go go high school!! -_-

I don't know what exactly he was refering to, but I can explain how this works for iPod. It can eaither be a really easy and effortless way to do it, or a completly anoying depending on how you look at it. An iPod will link itself to iTunes on a certian computer, and will mimic that library whenever you plug it into the computer (it charges and update through USB 2.0 or firewire). SO basically when you hook it up to charge it will imitate your iTunes on the computer, deleting anything you have deleted, and adding anything you have added. You can select songs for it not to add to your iPod, but it can be frustrating in that, you cannot delete a song from your computer and keep it on your iPod, if that something you want to do.

Look, I don't work for apple, and I don't really care what kind you get. That being said I am a happy customer and I really don't understand most of the complaints in this thread. My biggest worry in terms of what you have said would be MP4 (which can be turned off in iTunes anyway) not being good enough sound quality for you.

There is an MP3 player based off a korean one that I have, the name escapes me right now and I lent it to my friend. I'll give him a call tomorrow and ask him to tell me the name (lol).

Basically your computer will read it as a storage device and you can just drag music into a folder and viola. Color screen, does movies, 40 gigs for 350 when I got it but mine was on sale, so it might be a lil higher but I love it. No problems at all.

You can make your own folders and put whatever music you want in it. It also CAN sort music out the iPod way (by artist/genre/album) but you don't have to listen to music like that. Technically it's called making your own playlist, I made mine based on the Genre of music I was listening too. Since I downloaded a lot of tracks they wouldn't show up in order or in the right catagory (some of them didn't even have names lol).

This was using the 5gb mind you, although I can't imagine the 6gb to be any different. Pretty much every Mp3 player allows you to make your own play lists though, apparently apart from iPod...(?)

I use a creative zen xtra 60gb with notmad explorer, by red chair software. I've loved this mp3 player since day one. It has never failed me.

It took some getting used to because iTunes DOES kind of force you to kick some old habits when it comes to arranging your music collection, but what I really do like is how I can sort music by listening frequency, so that when I play out half my collection I can go back and find stuff I haven't listened to in a while, and just shuffle through that for a while. I like that I can do that.

The iPod is a separate issue. I like my iPod for the size and ease of use, but I don't like a few other things about it: shutting it down/turning it on is not intuitive, sometimes it will randomly stop playback when it's in my pocket and the device incorrectly detects the earphone jack has been pulled out (ipods are designed to autopause playback when this happens).

I don't understand people who get angry at iPods synching up and deleting songs from the playlists you update your iPod from though...create a separate playlist exclusively for your iPod. Why would you delete a file from your HDD and not from your iPod?

It's only 1gig, but i don't have alot of music i like anyways, so it's all good. You can also sort the mp3s into folders, but its kinda gay cause you have to use SonicStage for it.

Mainly a space issue if you have one. My mum has like 5gbs of music on her iPod, most of it stuff she probably never listens too, but she can't delete it (more specifically I CAN'T) without it wiping the songs off her iPod if she wants to add more. I have stuff on my MP3 player that's only on my MP3 player, that way I can listen to it IF I want too but not keep it on my comp...

Ok... iTunes is very easy to use... I organize my music like so:
Artist -> Album
But I also have the correct tags and genres as well... Its really just drag and drop or you can set it to automatically upload ALL new music files... Frankly I don't like that... I have the albums for all of the artists (I hate buying individual songs because usually if I like one song I will find another 5-6 on the album I like as well)

Anyway if you own an iPod it is very easy to get used to... It has a nice user interface as well as ease of transfer... I have barely noticed "missing" sounds in my music especially from the CD... I wish iPod would use a lossless music codec though... Anyway thats just my opinions and ramblings !

actually one thing I want to add about iTunes, that I think is priceless if you download any music, or just for mp3's in genral. When you go into a songs ID3 type window, there is a volume slider. I know we've all experenced having that one MP3 thats way louder than everything else or that one disk you ripped thats way to soft. You can simply use the slider to fix this, for either one song, or for an entire album.

I've owned a 20GB iRiver HP-120 for just over a year now, and I'm pretty happy with it. It plays MP3 and Vorbis (.ogg) files, and doesn't require any special software. It just shows up as a removable disk for you dump music onto in whatever arrangement you see fit, then you browse through the directory tree and play whatever you want. It works for me fairly well because I'm one of those people who obsesses over things like naming conventions and proper ID3 tags, but if your music collection is a giant folder of untagged junk you downloaded from kazaa, it probably won't work as well. (Also, shame on you.)

If you end up getting a player that has a Rockbox port, I highly recommend installing it. It probably has many more features than the factory firmware (depending on what you actually get), although it does have that sloppy "not quite finished/work in progress" feel that so many open-source software projects have.

Something like this for the non-Apple world already exists called Replaygain.
