It will actually do the opposite most of the time. Since you generally don't sit in dynamis, at least we don't as there are almost always pulls etc., if you don't have BOTH bardsong and rdm refreshing then SMN refresh >>> conserve MP. If you don't have decent MP regen already, then you don't have mana TO conserve. And depending on your party and what mobs you're fighting, aerial armor often doesn't suck either.
Conserve MP destroys auto refresh...it's not a contest. You conserve one spell a minute (which at a 30-35% activation rate, you will), you've saved more mp than autorefresh gives you. If it kicks in on a high mp cost spell (raises etc), so much the better. The only thing good about autorefresh is that it's not random like conserve mp is, though over the long haul, conserve mp will destroy autorefresh.
In case people are wondering how conserve mp works, if it kicks in, you save in increments of 1/8 to 5/8's of the spell's mp. Good stuff when you're casting spells with huge mp costs.
