right, so:

UDF decides to go down to King Ranperre's tomb and make the Vrtra room safe for monks to level in.

UDF begins to kill Vrtra.

Spectators arrive from BG, HokutenKnights, and the gilseller linkshell SpungDaggers.

UDF is making great progress killing Vrtra...getting it down to 30%. Gilsellers have auto-follow on vrtra, people are getting nervous, but we ignore them and continue whittling down Vrtra.

Vrtra becomes unclaimed for whatever reason.

Gilseller NIN provokes Vrtra. Vrtra begins to rampage around the room, killing people who have hate. Vrtra eventually goes after the gilseller NIN that provoked him, but before Vrtra can kill him, the gilseller Mijins.

Vrtra becomes unclaimed.

I stun Vrtra and claim him.

I transfer out of the add alliance into the main alliance with claim.....

....but Vrtra goes into CFH mode as soon as I join main alliance.

*sigh*. It was a pretty entertaining fight while it lasted. I'm not disappointed that the mob was stolen from us, nor that the confusion that followed resulted in Vrtra being CFH'ed, but simply that FFXI's design allows such stupid, retarded things to happen in the first place.

Well I'm a Black Mage, so I only had 3 or 4, I don't remember. Tanks, etc had more i believe.
