First of all: To clear up some confusion. You may have heard of the "lower 9th ward." This was the area made of mostly african american residents that got flooded. Why? The levee broke. Why? A barge smashed into it that was adrift. Sole reason for breaking? No. However...It did cause what remains today: confusion.

In the early 19th century, New orleans was faced with a flood. The river had reached dangeroud levels. So, the government destroyed the levee upriver, flooding the poor section of town.

Knowing this, you must look at what the people of the lower 9th ward whitnessed for themselves. They are sitting in their house, water is just moderately flooding the streets in such. Acouple minutes later they hear a "boom" (unknownst to them, this was the barge hitting the levee) and shortly following, their houses went from dry, to fucking underwater.

What would you think if you lived in the poor part of the town, the government had previously dynamited the levee in a similar situation, and following a distenctive boom, your fucking underwater.

Second: My family was considerably lucky. our house was one of few to remain above water. I am one of the .5%..yes 5 out of 1000 people, to be so fortunate. And yet i was still unable to live in my house for 2 months, and still lack phone, internet, cable, and gas services.

the other 99.5% of new orleans, got fucked. You dont think it is appropriate to spend well under 100 million dollars helping near a million united states citizens rebuild? I would myself consider president bush a dumbfuck for not spending well over a billion dollars. goodness knows he has in Iraq. The government has spent more than 1000 times(100,000%) more money fighting the war on terror than it has rebuilding a major port city in the fucking united states of america. We can spend what is now almost a trillion dollars going into iraq and spreading democracy to the poor empovrished people there, but we cant, and you cant, be bothered by your own fucking country?

How dare the government spend a measly 80 million helping our own citizens. How dare they take 80 million away from the funds we need to help citizens of another country, halfway around the world.

It really burns my nerves when someone plays the race card like this, like I used in my Tiki trial example. I read over Rahvins's post twice to make sure, and he doesn't say or imply that he's racist toward black people anywhere in any of his posts. I too am apalled by the way some, not all, of these people are spending the money given to them. It just so happens that a large portion of these people are black, but there are also other races involved. The way some of these people are behaving is horrible. As a few people mentioned, residents in other states have been kind enough to lend people certain neccesities and let them stay in their houses, and many of these people had their things stolen.
What's even more interesting is that it's not just a few people here and there that are misusing our tax dollars, it's a very significant amount. I go to Loyola University Chicago and some students from Loyola New Orleans were transferred to us while the city was being reconstructed. I was talking with a particular girl who came from the city in my economics class and she told me that the hurricaine wasn't the only danger down there, there was also excessive rioting and looting, which caused the injuries and deaths of many people. People are justified to oppose tax dollars going towards people who are destructive and misuse charity money. Before you jump out of your underwear and play the race card with me, I also recognize that there are people down there who use the money properly and were not vandilizing any property. Making an attempt to discern between these two group just adds even more "dirt to the digsite."

" So, technically, pretty much the entire cast of Genesis could have lived long enough to have been alive in both the 19th century and today ...

Seriously those people were less than 30 miles from escaping a flood zone and being where they would be somewhat safe. I rode my bike 30 miles several times when I was 15 lol. I live in a flood zone where I live also... it is beneath sea level. Whenver there is a hurricane category 3 and above predicted to hit us (usually there isn't) we get the fuck out lol. How about go away from the fucking hurricane when the government calls for evacuation 2 days prior of it hitting land? They were told numerous times on TV to leave. It was on the fucking news here that an evacuation was ordered lol... that is when you get on your bike, get in your car, walk or whatever. Staying behind is something alot of people do here too. I live in FL and my parents want to wait out hurricanes sometimes too.. which is fucking stupid.. but at least we don't live on the beach haha.

My uncle went all the way to New Orleans (we live in NJ) to volunteer help. He was treated like total shit and even had his life threatened while there. FOR HELPING.

I think it's safe to say that everyone knows the government wastes money.

But the topic of the thread was how these people are wasting it.

Two wrongs don't make a right and yeah although the government does shitty things like this, that doesn't mean the actions and attitudes these people can be swept under the rug.

I'll admit if I was in that situation I would have bought the necessities first, of course, but then I would have splurged on things too, alot of people would.

But add that to all the stories about the crime that seems to spread to wherever these people have been relocated to and that is what bothers the most.
Not only are they getting payed, getting free food and shelter, but then some of them are ROBBING people that are trying to help them? That's pretty low.
