As I understand it the UAE company acquired the british company and thus all it's assets. It SEEMS like the dem's are making this a bigger issue than it is but I really have not looked into it as I have been busy.

Granted though I don't like it, but there has to be something more substantial behind decisions than 'it gives me the willies'.
That sounds like a great idea. gtg bbl

No, port security is a huge deal. As it stands now 1% of cargo shipped in from overseas is checked. Does that give you the willies? It certainly gives me the willies.

In all honesty, I do not think any company should run the ports; it should be up to the government to do it. I remember reading something that said the government was supposed to "provide for the common defense" and "promote the general welfare" somewhere. Boy I wish I remember where I read that silliness.

(Oh wait; it was the Preamble to the Constitution.)

You guys do realize that the Companies dont run the Ports. (The Coast Gaurd does). The companies are just Parking attendants of the water. They park the boat unload/load then send them off. Not that it matters now, but i just wanted to clarify what these companies do and they in no way control the ports.

I don't pretend to know the intimate details of this issue but this is pretty much an accurate description of what in fact occurs.

Yet another example of politicians preying on ignorance.

I think you missed the point that just because you're friends with somebody, you don't sleep with them.

You do realize that the Cost Guard is significantly underfunded and doesn't have the manpower to inspect every ship and its cargo that comes into the port right?

The Coast Guard sets the policy for the ports, its largely up to the companies operating them to follow it. AT LEAST THATS WHAT LOU DOBBS TOLD ME ON CNN.

And I still think its retarded to not have American sea/air ports owned American companies or the American government. In a time of political unrest with the looming threat of conflict everywhere, it doesn't make sense to have half your country vulnerable to shutting down if a country declares war on you.

my point that im trying to make is...

those people are looking at this subject as a matter of "this country is where terrorists are coming from"...we are being truley raped by this discremination every where we go these days...and just because of the stirred up conspiricies and media and i blame the people for not thinking twice...

many americans are serial killers, many americans are bad people...
but when i look at an american..i look at him as an individual and not reflect my impression about him on all americans ...

Do you think Bush will be pressured to leave Office? People were comparing this with Nixon.

In my honest opinion, I don't think that having Dubai run the ports would have honestly been such a huge issue.

Most Americans are totally oblivious to this, however, and simply see this as a terrorist possibility, which, granted, could have made an opening, though I personally doubt it.

I think Bush was really trying to "suck up" or maybe even honestly try to strengthen relations with the UAE by making this move. However, the American people (and I don't include myself in the retarded group of American public) are NOT ready for this to happen so soon. (Probably not for another 10 years.)

I think what many people fail to realize (or be honest about) is that the details of this issue are not widely known at all. I'd look into it, but there's not a whole lot to look into. Carbon pretty much nailed it - Bush is trying to strengthen relations with middle eastern nations, and the American people were provided only with facts that make this whole deal look bad. Bingo bongo end of deal.

Also, port protection is a commodity, so it's kind of hard to regulate it without fucking up things economically. I'm talking price/performance competition etc. If you're only hiring american firms, you are perhaps hiring substandard firms due to the fact that there isn't a whole lot of competition.
