I've noticed many times, people uses 'rap' as a loop-hole to hate blacks without any of that 'zomg racist' chatter. Then again, rap does feature a lot of shallow themes, and could be considered universally bad. But, its usually not rap that is the problem. Its the kids listening to rap. Or any music for that matter. For the record, I think "Room Raiders", MTV Spring Break '0#, and shows of that degree has twice the negative impact than rap has had.

One thing is that is enjoyable about rap, is watching the insanely hypocritical stuff(rapper donates no money to poor when he is rich, but talks about how its so hard being poor; rapper objectifies women, but makes 2 or 3 love songs on his CD; rapper claims people are commerical based, but then creates products his name; rapper says how violence and drugs in the ghettos and music needs to stop, but enjoys making 'beef' songs and drug songs). If you could call rap an art form, for a second forget the songs about bitches hoes and shooting niggaz and realize it's basically just the same as any other song, lyrics with a beat, just lacking melodies sometimes. I guess you could think of it as much a bastardization of poetry as brittany spiers is to the good ol music of the 60's-70's. It's not hard to respect an art form while disliking those who partake in it.

I'm a bit bias being a musician, but i don't consider rap or country to be 'music' considering neither take any sort of musical talent whatsoever.

Rap = finding random words that have minimal or no relation and sticking them together because they rhyme, and creating noises out of bass that are in a rhythmic pattern....that is not freaking hard to do. Any jackass with a thesorus can be a rapper.

Country = Do i even need to say anything? A girl with a country accent sounds hot, but please keep jackass' cowboys off the stage please, it's just painful. So you can strum a few basic freaking chords in the least complex measures and sing about your uncle who also happens to be your father and your brother.

I'd rather listen to a guy sitting on the side of the street hitting an upside down bucket with drum sticks than either of these.

Saying "rap sucks!" is way too stupidly general. Because you're just throwing some great rappers into the pile of shit we have today. Tupac was awesome, easily best rapper ever in my mind. Nas is great as well, he usually raps ABOUT SOMETHING. Not "I got all deez cars and deez bitches and deez houses nigga and I got gunz and fuck the police I do drugs nigga smoke weed nigga fuck fuck nigga nigga fuck fuck" Now I do like some Jay Z too, not all of it, mainly the black album. But he's retired now anyway so it doesn't matter.

Biggy was talented but he kind of paved the way for all these "gangstas" we have today.

I generaly dislike the current rap and pop trends in the united states. They more and more try and play twords instant gratifications and teens emotional mindset. Kids hit pubierty, they tend to get angry at anything, and rap generaly plays to this fact. It's great marketing but some of the kids really take it too far. What you listen to shouldn't define you as a person, if it does you should kill yourself now and do the world a favor. Still, I can walk through just about any public highschool and pick types of music people listen too just by what they are wearing and how they are acting.

More then anything tho I hate any music that is marketed twoards emotional mindset. Having one or 2 songs on an album is fine, but if the entire album is about "Fucking authority" and instant gratifications like money, women and drugs then its not really music. I lived through puberty, I no longer feel the need to rebel against authority figures and I'm not so short sighted and self centered to obsess with money and drugs.

At the same time, the music that focuses on love and sex is just as bad. Most of the kids that listen to the music are teen girls or guys that have never had a girlfriend. The girls that obsess over boy bands are damaged goods and should not be allowed to procreate. If your dumb enough to believe what a late-20's pedophile thinks love and relationships are then you need to do the world a favor and overdose on your mothers antidepressants. The Ideas this music instills in people only hurts society.

You are an un-teen year old girl, the guy you are dating only cares about getting into your pants and there is no chance that you are going to get married to him. If you ever use the term "but I can't live with out him", I will hold you to this fact and kill you myself. If your an un-teen your old boy, stop listening to this crap. Don't focus on the fact you will never get laied and focus on doing something productive and you enjoy yourself. Girls are more intrested in guys that do stuff like sports or work or anything. If you cry yourself to sleep because you think your never going to be happy at age 16, then its better that you don't get laied.

Their was another topic like this that orf made some time back and it was basically 100 white guys(no pun intended) vs me.... People saying rap sucks etc for 15 pages and me defending what i like and my way of life and it really really sucks having your "friends" down your music and your way of life, and for this shit to come up again....why should i have to take this shit twice...

I have a friend i know online known her for like 2-3 years and the only thing we have in common is anime she looks like the exact opposite of me and we live states apart. We were talking about music the other day and she told me about how she likes DDR and i got some songs that she said she liked and i should check out they where tecno i didn't like any of them and i dislike DDR for that matter but i know she does and thats all that matters, i know its good music cause she likes it, it's just not my cup of tea.

For you guys in here beating your heads against the wall, something in a movie I saw once summed up the feelings of most rap listeners on the rap genre: "People in the desert don't drink the sand cause they think it's water. They drink it cause they don't know the difference."

Speaking as one who does, the sad thing is trying to explain what real hip hop is to some of these folks is like trying to teach astrophysics to wino... It's just not happening, especially because they're basing what they think they know about the genre off the overcommericalized garbage they hear on MTV (not that I'm hatin' on rappers for trying to make a dollar, though).

Some of the beats are tight, yes, but all most rappers do (at least the ones you hear about) is pimp product labels... Hip hop has been reduced to nothing more than a 5 minute commercials. Videos are even worse, with asses shakin', platinum blingin', and product placement everywhere. Anyways, when I hear rock on a commercial, I don't assume that is what all rock music is about... Why do most of you about rap? Even worse, why assume everyone who listens to rap wants to be some kinda thug or gangster?

Now, for the other uneducated statements... Rappers have no musical knowledge? Making beats ain't easy, and last I checked, percussion was a class of instrument. Also, lemme fill you in on what "sampling" is. Most rap tracks are composed in MIDI, a digtal format that stores the musical notes from a wide range of sounds and instruments. Beat makers usually play their own instruments to record these "samples" because the pitch and tone of their own instruments are better than those found in standard MIDI packages. What does that mean, if MIDI is composed of notes and tracks are created in MIDI? Rap is scored music, albeit arranged on a PC and synthesized on a MPC. Think about the "loop" in a rap song; it's pretty much the same as a "riff" in a rock song.

And just like rock, some lead singers have no talent in musical instruments, only a voice best suited to the music being played. Oh, and as for "kindergarten speak" of rappers (as annoying as the constipated grunts of rock), listen to some real hip hop, and hear how a creative lyrist can weave words to tell a story or fit how your feeling...

Listen to some EPMD.
Listen to some KRS-One.
Listen to some Big Daddy Kane.

Then holler back about what you think rap is.
