From Econ 201 (maybe 202), one of the key causes of inflation is by a concept called the "Velocity of Money." This is the speed with which money is distributed through a system and yes, it is an actual economic term. The faster the velocity of money, the quicker inflation is applied. Being able to buy gil increases the velocity of money.Originally Posted by Hirronimus
For instance, say you make $50,000/year. That covers basic cost of living, a decent house, some minor luxuries, etc. However, say you want a Lamborghini. Barring going into extreme debt (which doesn't affect), you are not able to get the Lamborghini. However, in FFXI, you can just trade in an external commodity (real life $$$) to get the Lamborghini. This is a situation not easily reproducible in real life. The difference between borrowing on credit and buying gil is that you don't have to pay the gil back. Therefore, you can theroetically acquire infinite money at no cost to the in-game current economic structure. This allows you to spend more freely than you normally would -- no reason to save for a rainy day in FFXI.
Earning $50,000/year is vastly different than having $50,000 in expendable income. ALL of FFXI is expendable income, and you can always go and get more if you want it. Gilsellers are NOT increasing the amount of gil in the system (well, they are technically, but it's not the major cause of their contribution to inflation) any more than any other character does, probably less. They are, however, vastly increasing the velocity of money, which is a key contributing factor to inflation.
Remember the time someone accused me of RMTing in tells and lower jeuno /sh and gave me a Judah RMT lecture because I bought a vermillion cloak?
Me too.
I like how Judah is an asshole to this guy for buying an account, when his old ls member was the one who sold it.![]()
The bolded part is what I was talking about. I never said RMT doesn't affect the economy. Look at it this way.Originally Posted by Byrd
They keep item flow into system a constant thing. Ok, given than the gil is consolidated from one user to another by purchasing gil, which in turn allows that person to buy an item for greater amount and forces the prices on certain items to rise, but those bursts of increase are small and tend to be brought down once the gil has disipated across multiple accounts thru means of whatever purchases are made with that.
The amount of gil in the system does not increase nor does it decrease. That is something taxes, chocobo fees, etc etc do. Unless of course gil duping exists on the server, than we're all going to hell fast.

'nuff said.
RMT is only bad until you quit the game and go to sell your account. Then it's ok. Didn't you know that?
Oh, I'm sorry. I'll be sure to remember that if I see his account for sale.Originally Posted by Gamutstreet

he might have been galka. i thought he was a taru tho. been like over 1 1/2 years sence i seen the character i also knew the original aedin and talked to him about this. its a similar situation that ourangenamu had when he sold his character ;.; also the original aedin still plays but he requests his new name not be given to anyone. =p
The ratio to gil spent that exits the economy vs. gil brought into the economy is nowhere close to equal, so the amount of gil in the system has constantly been increasing. And yes, duping does exist, which is why there is no way short of banning dupers to entirely control the economy.Originally Posted by Hirronimus
So increasing the drop rate on items would not solve the problem?
That would only cause mass hysteria due to people actually accomplishing goals instead of complaining about stuff.Originally Posted by Hirronimus
Wait, we'll actually enjoy the game? Oh noes.... but seriously, when all said and done, the hard truth comes down on SE and their poor planning out economy which seems to be center focus of everything in this game these days.
