I really didn't expect it until christmas time anyways.. who wouldn't release hot stuff like this around christmas?
They must be making the final touches to ensure it breaks around two weeks after the warrenty expires. We all know that trick worked a charm for boosting PSone and PS2 sales.
As long as it plays FFXI and has decent resolution to resize menus for my TV, I'll buy it. Oh and it better be backwards compatible.

I dont think ps3 will play ffxi.
I don't think ps3 will play anything. Most disappointing thing I've ever heard of. After the ps and ps2, how could Sony get things so wrong.Originally Posted by djzombie

Lol, what if they release the PS3 but wait a week before releasing the HDDs?Originally Posted by Xavier
I wonder if they even have actual hardware yet.. because all they show are tech demos made on PCs lmao. Fuck Sony I say. The only product I have bought from them that lasted more than a year was a walkman in 6th grade. Everything else died in a few months. Overrated ass company riding on the reputation they built years ago. They are lucky they had the 3rd party software support for PSX and PS2, because if they didn't those consoles would not have done half as well.
Wait.. so ps3 won't play ps1 and ps2 games? Fail.
Its backwords compatibile, but I'm not sure if FFXI would work or not. It might've been specificly designed for the PS2 HDD or something, I dunno. You'd think if it was going to work, Square would've said something.Originally Posted by Not Kuno

PS2 just rode the hype. I find it extremely overrated as a system. Theres probably about 5 games on it I actually enjoyed, a shitload of uninspired sequals and multi-platform ports. Was it a lack of innovation or just hard to develop for, I don't know.
PS3 is supposed to be far harder to develop for and far more expensive to make games for. On top of that, Sony keeps making conflicting statements about it, overhyping what it can do, promising features, cutting features. And to top it all off, theres still those looming reports from analyst that the PS3 can't possibly ship for under $600, with some putting it as high as $900.
Blue-Ray is a stupid technology to bank on for this generation. Sure, its a massive jump in storage, but the technology is so new that its price isn't very efficent.
All I want is the Revolution, an inexpensive next-gen console, innovative controller that has a standard controller shell for normal games, and the ability to download the best Nintendo owned NES, SNES, N64 games.
Games are quickly reaching the point where they just aren't going to look any better. Higher resolutions, the ability to support more on-screen actions at one time etc, but the point is coming up where the only jump to be made is photo-realism. To me, MGS3 is one of the best looking PS2 games around. Its one of the best looking games around period. I don't believe there needs to be all this money spent to try and make games look slightly prettier at the cost of longer development times and a higher retail value. I have a Xbox 360, the jump is impressive on an HD-tv, but its not mind altering. Its why I think Nintendo has been right all along. Innovation is the key to the future.
Do games seriously need to look better than this to make gamers happy?

Its a compelling story that gets me to play games, not flashy graphics. Even back on the PS1, when games started to actually look good, a game like Xenogears, which was pixeleted (read: not ugly, just looked unpolished in some places) to hell compared to FF7/FF8 remains my favorite Square game, because it had THE best story/characters and music I've ever seen in a game.
Xenogears is my favorite rpg of all time. The scene with Id lifting the Yggdrasil into the air with one hand is something I still remember to this day. Thankfully, the PS2 made character models and the overworld much better when you enabled the smoothing option.![]()
As for PS3... I still haven't bought the 360 cause of the pricetag (besides not having having any titles that I really want atm), so I can't even fathom buying a PS3 for $500 let alone anything higher.
Xav I think they said at that fan festival thing they are waiting to receive specs on the PS3 before deciding on it (about developing FFXI for the PS3 that is). Not that I'm concerned, as it'd be pretty lame to make FFXI a flagship game for a new console.
My PS1 never broke and my PS2 still works fine, and I use it for games and DVDs A LOT.Originally Posted by Russta
I'm really weary about buying a new game console simply because I don't play a lot of new games anymore, I use my PS2 to play mainly PS1 games, kinda sad, it's like an expensive DVD player that I bought for FFX.
edit: and I agree with your entire post Xav, PS1 > PS2, Nintendo > all. Sony and Microsoft play it safe releasing systems with performance upgrades, Nintendo tries new things even if they might fail, they always have. My entertainment center has NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, and PS2 hooked up and ready to play, looks like Nintendo has a monopoly on my house.
God I was so pissed when I found out they delayed Zelda: TP. It was coming NEXT MONTH! That's like the only game I have been truly looking forward to this year... now I gotta wait even more... sigh... But it will be great.Originally Posted by Xavier
Oh and I got my PS2 maybe 5 months after launch, and I just started having probs with it around November of last year... the disc tray gets jammed, and the PS2 also locks up sometimes while playing PS1 games (for instance, during some spells in Chrono Cross). But my NES (with some blowing on the carts) is still going strong, no probs with SNES or N64 either.![]()
I like PS2, but that's cause the PS1 was a fucking genious of a console, anyone could seriously develop a game on that console (which is why there's a lot of them around).
There are good games for the PS2, it just depends on what genre you like, you can't expect games to be as good as they were on PS1, but you can hope, games like Xenogears and So2 are my favourite games of all time. It's just a shame that Xenogears only had 2 discs of music, cause it was kinda annoying to hear the same music over again (even if the tracks are great you get sick of hearing them after a while).
I will give PS3 a chance, but unlike the last 2 generations you can't really get by with only 1 console, having multiple consoles (or good friends with them) is the only way to enjoy games these days. The only thing the next generation should do is increase memory, the graphics are easily good enough already, and if it looks TOO realistic I don't get why I'm playing a game... I want things like 400 enemies on screen with multiple explosions and special effects with no drop in FPS. I want more geomodding (think red fraction) in my shooting games with no lag.
I'm not looking forward to the Nintendo revolutions cause I don't think the controller with work well. We can only hope that this generation of gaming is as intense as I hope it would be, I'm not a graphic whore, I'm an engine whore =\ (and story/gameplay, but that's obvious for me).
Ocarina of Time sparks a little feeling my soul that makes me smile. Due to the lack of those types of games at the time or just pure brilliance, I see it as the best game of all time. If you don't like that game, you don't have a soul.
I'm not excited by anything PS3 or Xbox360 has to offer. I believe console gaming needs to stick to its roots.
could not agree more. im playing through xenogears as we speak.Originally Posted by Elcura

This is why I don't buy consoles at release unless I'm extremely overly-excited like I was with the Gamecube release. Being limited to 5-10 games at release, which are usually mediocre at best, it doesn't bother me that the console is delayed. I usually end up waiting for a few months before giving in and getting a new console.Analysts expect the PS3 to cost about $500 with an initial line-up of at least five to 10 games.
And holy shit at XenogearsI wasn't aware other people had actually played that game.
Delayed games cannot be avoided. Remember how long Ocarina of Time was delayed? And when the game was finally released, oh god. It was heaven.God I was so pissed when I found out they delayed Zelda: TP. It was coming NEXT MONTH!
