I think there are so many evidence that tells us how Aegis is so powerfull relic weapon, take IRON ss for instance @ Kirin when Winraf straight tanked Suzaku during chainspell, I didn't see how much dmg he took but a normal PLD even with Defending Ring won't survive 3-4 firagaIII/Flare/FireIV unless there are 100 whms spamming cures behind him.
Also the galka PLD in unicorn I personally saw him with Rotsu take 20-50 dmg from Nidhogg's breath (this guys doesn't have any shadow items) and Aspid hits him with 50-100dmg per swing :E

Are you stupid? For one, anyone can tank Suzaku during Chainspell because if you're a compitent LS you are stunning him, like Winraf ls was probably doing, so that he couldn't just SPAM spells.

As for my opinion, I think any improvement on a shield is a good improvement; especially when that improvement makes it significantly greater than any other shield in the game.

I guess I will speak for winraf and IRON, since I tank next to him and have been at the events in which your talking about these screen shots.


1st off, the sheild is greater than a Terra Staff, I hate all the fucking gimps who say earth staff, go buy a fucking Terra Staff.

2nd We have been doing all kinds of nasty things to Winraf to test the sheild. During the Suzaku chainspell, we did stun. We just watched to see how the shield blocks. We understand how the magic defense work, were more concerned about the proc rate of the shield. We have full magic defense builds on our plds and war/whms, again we cant let winraf get hit with chainspelled magic, while testing out the proc rate.


3rd Winraf has a shield skill build. The only piece he could really improve on is wearing AF1+1 feet instead he just has AF1 Feet. He uses Kaiser Helm, has full merits, sheild torque etc.

4th, The mighty proc rate. Well like anything in FFXI, it is inconsitant. Like our shadow items, I have had my shadow mantle proc 3 times in a row, then not proc again for an entire fight. The shield does will block like 80% with exp mobs and the harder the HNM the less it procs. We have some test results like it blocking 10/20 Byakko attacks, where he took 100 damage from normal hits and 30 damage from the blocks. But yes does winraf still die, of course. At one Tiamat he just got pounded on the shield didnt go off.

I can say from our tests, and trust me, we arent trying to fool anyone, we wouldnt bullshit anyone, if it sucked than we wouldnt be looking to waste more LS resources on another one. Personally I feel the Horn is the best relic and the Sheild is a close second. Does the shield make a PLD invincible, no, but it does reduce a lot of damage making NMs we would normally use NINs for, now tankabe by a pld straight up.

Lets also not forget, improvements are in the works for PLD in ToAU. Specifically in regards to shield. Hopefully this really does some nice things for PLD.

As was said above. Not invincible, but one hell of a nice tool. Especially in comparison to the rest of the Relic Weapon lot.

i watched Lei tank faf for ~5mins and he blocked alot, and when he didnt shadow mantle kicked in. Id say 1/10 hits were over 100dmg until it powered up. So many 30~dmg hits, there was a critical for 84dmg, and another crit for 68dmg. Its def good on the right mobs, but thats the only time ive seen it in use -.-

276 + 2x4 merits + 6 kaiser + 7 shield torque + 5 knights earring + 3 buckler earring + 10 boxers + 12 af+1 = 327 max and +10 more for 337 if you wanna use that douche acheron shield or masters ... both of which is irrelevant if you are using aegis...

LVL range definitely affects shield proc rate. just go fight some lvl 30ish mob you can see the difference between 50 and then exp mobs. whatever the combination that makes shield skill go off... skill to the second power - evasion / accuracy + drone earrings /8 + pi x jailer weapon. i couldnt really tell you

if you have max shield skill and the 4 merits you wont really need to wear anything else..maybe the torque and knights earring at the most. stop wearing those af1 it looks retarded. your own level restricts you from being to good in one area no matter how much skill you put on. shield is already A+ you arent going much further than that

A) Knight's Earring Sucks
B) Piling on more Shield Skill will always be beneficial for reducing damage (to a point, after about 300ish you see diminishing returns). 276 skill and 8 from merits is not going to give you a decent enough proc rate on HNMs.

Highest -mag reduction is 50%...you're still eating some hardcore Flares, Fire IVs and Firaga IIIs...I dont think anyone could survive that without immense curing. (Maybe mini-Suzy would resist and let you survive, but not daddy Suzy)

What is the average proc rate on Tiamat? 40%? 30%? 20%? How much damage does it negate per block on Tiamat? From what you said about Byakko it negates 70% of damage when it procs, which I guess is universal and not dependent on shield skill.

Also does -% damage gear proc before or after shield blocks procs?

For comparsion, if Terra's Staff were a shield, it would block 20% of hits for 100% damage reduction. From what people have said of other PLDs fighting Tiamat, Aegis procced around 33% of the time for 70% damage reduction. They're about the same really :/.
