I believe the artifacting that you see is just a side-effect of the JPEG compression used when storing the screenshot.

Not really no, here's a quick example I have lying around on my computer, look around King Behemoth's name, same deal with the artifacts around his name. All cheaply done Jpegs of FFXI SSs (read : using paint) look like that.

The screenshot of Vivian on Alla has the same box. Here's a zoom in of both:

The reasons I beleive it's fake :

Letters are too thick, look at the Vivian one in comparison to Vilma. Vivians are thin, Vilma are larger, and more fuller.

In the top one, Voluptuous - the O is bigger than the U, however on the bottom one, the O is of equal height to the rest of the lower chase characters (except for the obvious T and L ). Artifacting may put a pixel off here and there, but will not have a consistantcy of 1 character being taller than the others.

Look how distorted the letter M is for "Vilma"

Anyone consider the text in the bottom right is distorted in the exact same manner? I must admit when I was going to the pic for the link I thought "wow that looks fake" but after considering what I just said I simply assumed whoever took the pic was playing in some weird resolution, maybe widescreen.

But yeah, it doesn't really matter now seeing as a truly genuine pic was posted. I read about Vilma and Defoliate the day that patch was released and asked a certain dev about them on AIM. His reaction to anyone knowing they existed so soon after the patch was confirmation enough 8)

What would the motive for faking something like this be? Maybe the weird lettering is just due to differences in the client of whoever took this SS. But yeah, the NM exists so who cares.

What I find the most interesting about this screenshot is that it shows that Vilma is easily soloable. I had always imagined he would be on the order of Vivian, and nowhere near soloable.

By a well-equpped NIN subbing WHM. For everyone else it's probably pulling teeth.

eh, THF/NIN is at least as good as NIN/WHM. Bloody Bolts heal up to 100HP per hit, and they don't require MP

I didn't say THF/NIN could kill it in the fewest number of hits, I said if NIN/WHM can solo it, so can THF. The fact that individual hits would be weaker than a NIN is completely irrelevant lol

lol now you're just pulling stuff out of your ass to try to win. Somehow I don't think it would have a regen of like 200+ / tick.
