That must be it. I like how they reshuffled it too. ._.

Basing things on existing mythology doesn't necessarily mean lack of originality, I think giving mob names based on different myths is a lot more interesting that generic retarded fantasy names. They could have called Xolotl "Dark Lich" or "Undead Lord" or something equally boring, instead they used a name from Aztec mythology. Wouldn't be awesome if Fafnir was called "Fire Dragon" and Nidhogg "Greater Fire Dragon", or "Firewing" and "Pyrosomethingorother"? Not really.

SE's done a lot of dumb crap in FFXI and other games, but picking names from all sorts of mythologies is most certainly not what I'd call a problem.

The only thing that really bothers me about using mythological names in games is when they are close but change something essential. It does not bother me that Balor is a fomor instead of a cyclops with death-vision, but it does bother me that they say that Phoenix is female.

Anyway, I don't see why would FFXI be Greek mythology, only because you saw a picture of Cerberus.

    Few exemple:
Nidhogg, Jormungand, Fafnir, Ragnarok, Hrotti, Ridill, Balmung, Odin, Fenrir, Valhall, Mjolnir, etc.= Norse mythology.
had to add a few extras out of the obvious ones :P looked so thin..

Nidhogg is from different mythologies btw... in norse, nidhogg is a worm (not wyrm) which chews on Yggdrasil's roots. other version of Nidhogg is a Dragon which sucks on corpses. (for some reason... dunno why he can't chew there as well.. ;P )

Fafnir is from the beginning a man who could change into a dragon. then he got stuck in his dragon form and guards his treasures (including the two swords Hrotti and Ridill) and he got killed by the sword Balmung.

Jormungand is a snake who grew so big, he reached around the whole world(Midgård/Midgard) and then swallowed his tail and continued to grow. Thor fished him up at some point...

^might be fun to know what you camp every day. a worm, a snake eating himself and a silly dragon who wants to be a real boy again.

the things you have to learn in school ._. gee... Sweden...

Lack of originality? I personally think Square has always had a good imagination about all Mythology, and how to introduce it in every game.

Layoneil, you fail. Next time you want to say something like that, use http://www.google.com first. :D
Vrtra *is* Hindu, I thought. In fact, I think it was Ramuh that defeated him. It's been a while since I read that myth, and I don't feel like googling it, but I'm fairly positive that's the case.

just cause a game has orcs doesn't make it a LOTR rip off.. the world and history of Warcraft is quite different from that of LOTR's :\ most people think of every fantasy type thing as being a ripoff of LOTR -_- so sadly mistaken.

    Correct.

Wrong. It was Indra, god of war/weather whatever, ruler of heaven.

Warcraft is very very similar to LOTR. I've played WC2 and WC3 with both expansions (and enough WoW to realize its plotless). Its mostly LOTR stuff, from the races to the cities to the monsters. Even frostmourne has some 'the one ring' overtones. The stories may be different but I'll be damned if the setting is very different. FFs always have interesting, new, unique settings and races.

FF tends to use about 10 different monsters all reskinned anyways... the only similarities between LoTR and Warcraft (and other Fantasy type things) are the common things about all fantasy things.. orcs, elves, etc.

Um yeah, I'm saying that about all fantasy things, warcraft was just an example. Admittedly, FFXI has some of that but, for example, Elvaan are not very like LotR elves. Frail, smart, and swift? Umm not Elvaan. The Goblins are aesthetically like nothing I've seen before. They behave similarly to traditional goblins but whatever. Quadav and Yagudo are both very different from traditional fantasy enemies.

You are either very young or don't read or watch many varied fantasy materials.

I know yagudo have existed but this is a radical reinterpretation. What would Quadav be from?

FFXI and I'm sure the rest of the series really lacks originality. It's nothing but a rehashed history book with spiffy graphix.
This is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Since when did FFXI followed any of the mythologies? Taking names from history is not lacking originality, specially if they recreate the beings entirely.

FFXI does seem to be more distant to LOTR than WoW. One thing I like about FFXI is the lack of war. Constantly the theme is that Beastmen and People can get along together, and that everyone are all brothers. When you are brought into the game you think the Beastmen are the end-all ever beings of badness, but slowly you learn that they have are no different than the 5 playable races, even the ancients have their reasons.

I always thought the Yags and the Quads were rip offs of the 2 races from "The Dark Crystal"
