You gave very very bad examples, because those were incremental steps. Multiple Character Switching has been around before RE2, Seiken Densetsu 3 comes to mind. Just because it was the 1st in the genre doesnt mean its innovation. Gun powder making = crafting which has been along for a long time. Improving controls (with few exceptions) is not innovative either, its fixing mistakes. RE4 was innovative actually though, how it controlled etc. You can't say a transition between games is innovative, games should stand on their own. Each FF has had innovations in some way, but its pretty common for RPGs to innovate since it is the only genre where the 'gameplay' isn't defined. Diablo II and Final Fantasy and Morrowind are all RPGs and all play very differently. .hack as a concept was innovative actually as a postmodern twist on MMOs. It was a plot innovation, but those countOriginally Posted by Elcura
Oh and if Nintendo's fate hangs with the controller than the DS must not be a phenomenon like it is, that has people camping out to get new color of a rerelease. Also, for the people who are (or at least should be) in the game industry, this controller sparks a multitude of ideas. I've heard some and come up with many ways to use it for new fun. Hell, even a reinterpretation of a current game for the system's controller will have to come up with new ways to do things and thus innovate. Necessity breeds innovation. EA board meetings don't
For the record, I do like your arguement though I disagree with parts of it.
Th Revolution should open Nintendo up a lot to 3rd party developers, since a Revolution dev kit is cheaper than a PSP dev kit, (and of course much cheaper than developing for 360 or PS3) and I think I read its not much different than programming for the Gamecube.
Some developers have preliminary dev kits so far, and they're pretty much a Gamecube + motion sensor + new controller, so the final product probably won't be too much more complicated to design games for.
=X maybe I worded it wrong 1st paragraph was about innovation and second was about incremental - but I was trying to say how incremental steps can be good and new, most things that appear in games also appear in real life (crafting etc) so if a game has crafting in it, is it truly innovative? But I guess being the first to do something (on different platforms of course) counts as innovation. .Hack was innovative at first, the gameplay, ideas and story were great in the first game (I loved the last bost encounter and build up), then the story and the gameplay pretty much stayed the same apart from getting better/stronger spells and the story died down around game 3.Originally Posted by Maxxthepenguin
It sounds like you contradict yourself when it comes to RE4, the change was in the aiming and camera perspective, nothing else was much different (that didn't happen in other games/genres) but I still consider it innovative cause it's a new thing for RE to do and pull off, my idea of innovative is different from yours (or I'm using the wrong words) but it still counts for me.
When I look at a game series (or a new game) I look for what's new in the game I'm playing (the case for stand-alone games is; I look for new things that other games in the same genre haven't got or what they changed and got right), not what's new that hasn't been done in another game before.
As for FF, only reason I mentioned FFX > FFXII is cause it really is a big jump, if FFXII was ATB I doubt I would've minded (it can get boring during random battles though and ATB isn't innovative in later FF's, at first it was though). FFVI > VII was innovative in graphics > FFVIII wasn't innovative, it was just materia done differently > FFIX wasn't very innovative either cause it had been done in a previous FF (iirc). But all had changes in it which set them apart, something new or something rehashed and presented differently. Doesn't stop the game being fun, all 3 used ATB systems so the battles played out similarly.
I didn't say anything about the DS controls, it obviously works well (although we won't see it's true potential until we grow 2 more arms) and that's fine, it works. The Revo hasn't been tested for it's new games, we've seen demos of peole being stupid with sound effects, but the thing that bothers me is that maybe a game would be all about cooking? I don't see how much fun that would be, and the size of normal affordable TVs is probably too small to have anything exciting and swingy done well. I can think of a number of things that can go wrong with the controller, I can also see a few things that would be awesome too (no guns though olde). It gives me ideas about how I'd like some games to play out. But I'm worried that the controller would restrict you on the type of game play you can enjoy during one game, if it's a sword swinging game (like a FP hack 'n slash) wouldn't you get tired and possibly bored (but mostly tired) from swing that around? Anyway, enough of my ramblings about the controller, I just hope they pull it off.Originally Posted by Maxxthepenguin

I'm impressed with the revolution for one reason. These games are going to be running full speed, as good as they were in original form. Not buggy sound, or anything like that. I have a PSP, and the emulation on it is disappointing. Anything besides NES games run like absolute shit, as in the sound doesn't sound right or it runs at a crawl. Especially mode9 games on SNES, like F-Zero.Originally Posted by Zigma

Are they planning on letting you use different controllers than the remote-control looking thing? Playing Street Fighter II or Killer Instinct with one hand would just be kinda weird...

Yeah, they haev a base controller that you plug the remote into that looks like the wavebird. Or they'll release a specialized controller with motion sensing for fighersOriginally Posted by Meilyn

I can't wait for the revolution's controller, because one will FINALLY be able to swing around lightsabers in a Star Wars game for real. It'll be hell to debug, but damn it would sell like fucking hot cakes...the online battles alone would just be insane.
Though it may sound a little weird, I feel "at home," sort of, when I play older games that I used to play when I was kid. Memories I didn't know I had come floating back into my thoughts, and for just a very few, delicious moments, I feel like I'm a kid again. :3
I love my old games. I treasure them forever. In fact, I still have a bunch of my old SNES, NES, and Genesis games. :3 I don't have the heart to get rid of them.
I know the feeling... just something about playing lTTP just relaxes me.Originally Posted by Carbon
I'm hoping that Nintendo will somehow add online multiplayer to the older games, or at least something new that you can't get from downloading them for free off the internet. Anyways, it probably isn't likely.
I don't know about people bitching about newer games. I thought God Of War was a fucking masterpiece.
new games rock too. Games that arent possible on old consoles like : Space Channel 5, We <3 Katamari, Resident Evil4, Silent Hill series, PN03 (underrated, good game), Smash bros melee, Rez, Pikmin, etc etc.
Old games will only be a big hit with the older gamers.
If you dont see what Nintendo are trying to do, they've already worked their magic. It's a strategic plan.
Older gamers play older games all the time on their old consoles.
Older gamers will buy Revolution
*nintendo throws a pokeball about here and captures the adult audience*
Nintendo releases a bunch of games aimed at an older audience
Nintendo wins.

I know newer gamers will like old games (i got my cousins into old Snes games, LttP, FF, etc ), but the real focus of the older games is the older audience.Originally Posted by Kaylia

Although I don't quite get what you meant by the last part about the older games = Revo win. I mean, why explain it when it seems painfully obvious that's who they're trying to appeal too?
You could say that PS3 wins cause it appeals to people who like mainstream things or are graphic whores, they appeal to people in that market so therefore they win?
Likewise Xbox could win cause they appeal to FPS/online gamers with Xbox live, therefore hooking that audience and then winning?
I'd like to think that there was more then 1 key factor in a console that makes it good.
What was I talking about?
Oh yeah, Rez fucking owns, such an underrated game, I wish I still had it...
SSBM and Space Channel 5 .... ahhh...
I know somebody who got rez+the 'trance vibrator', and a girlfriend around 2 weeks later. 2nd date, they barely have even kissed, she walks in on him playing rez, sees the vibrator, grabs it, and proceeds to get off to him playing Rez.Originally Posted by Elcura

a PSP has never been about just running home brew software. It is just something that comes with the community.
It's about playing movies, playing 3d accelerated games, listen to music, surfing the internet etc all in your pocket.
Why would I wanna buy a revolution? To me, there isn't anything innovating about it other than the controller. Agree or disagree with me but don't go trying to 'fix' my post without getting you facts straight.
