That makes as much sense as me saying you are lucky other jobs can't kick attack while they hold a sword. Your legs are free to kick.. even when holding a great axe. When you counter, you basically are getting hit but the opponents blow is reversed and they take damage. Parry just is pushing their attack aside with your own weapon, which can be done without the assailant even hitting the shadow you have up to fool him into thinking he is hitting you. You can counter someone just by throwing them and using the momentum of their attack to make them fall on their face. When someone attacks your shadow.. your shadow gets hit and does not do the countering. It isn't like you are reaching out past your shadows and anticipating your opponents attack and knocking it away with your own weapon.

Is he replying in the wrong topic or something? Wtf does that have to do with anything? (and yes it's possible to "parry" a hit in real life.)
No that is blocking.. you block shit in boxing. You do not parry with your fists lol. When you block you take damage due to your arms actually getting hit... instead of the weapon.

No, both can be done in boxing, and all martial arts...but regardless I see the point you're trying to make in relation to the game, and why parrying checks before shadows, and guarding does not.

guard is equivalent to shield, not parry.

Nope you block with your open hand in martial arts... parrying is done by a weapon with a guard on the handle. If you try to parry a staff with a staff for example you get hit across the knuckles (I have had this happen and it sucks). Blocking a staff with a staff is different due to how you hold the weapon.

You ever do any fencing? Parrying and blocking are completely different. That is why I feel it is funny they make parrying so passive in FFXI. With the correct stance you will block a certain amount of your opponents blows.. you have to actually try to parry someone and get them at a disadvantage so you can score points.

Just trying to make some sense of FFXI's retarded battle system via using real life comparisons. Not like the developers would explain any of it to us otherwise... They need all the time sinks they can get. Yes they are that lazy.

par-ry- To deflect or ward off a thrust or blow.

Nowhere anywhere does it say that parrying can only be done with a weapon.

I used to study JKD with my brothers and even though its not as widely practiced anymore, it's still a basis that alot of other fighting styles are based on. Alot of the parrying portion of JKD is taken from Wing Chun, a martial art which alot of its defenses are based off of parrying and deflecting your opponents attacks.

Yeah that has parrying as a part of a counter.. when you parry in fencing you do not necessarily have to counterstrike afterwards. You can just repeatedly parry your opponents attacks to make them look like a jackass. Parrying can be done to either high/mid/low attacks regardless of stance, but you block attacks easier based on which stance you are in. In fencing you parry an attack and then counter.. which is how you can score points. It is called counterpunching in boxing. You just put your guard up and absorb blows if you are blocking lol. MNKs in FFXI not appear to use JKD... and that is a modern martial art based off of other martial arts... not the other way around. Bruce Lee is credited with inventing JKD and that makes it modern... some martial arts are ancient and date back thousands of years. Like fencing lmao.

lol... it is the same basic thing without the opportunity to intstantly counterattack.

Yeah sorry, I worded it wrong...I meant he based it off of older martial arts, and its sort of a melting pot of all of the things he felt were useful in many different styles, and combined them.

Since you brought up the subject of fencing, this is something I have never understood. If Red Mages are supposed to be fencers (AF weapon is called Fencing Degen, level 50 RSE ring is Fencer's Ring, level 70 JSE erring is Fencer's Earring, AF2 set called Duelist's Armor) then why does the class have such a shitty parry skill?

    I just don't get it.

It would make them even more disgustingly overpowered as a solo class than they already are. Other than that there is absolutely no reason.

How so? It's a pain to level UP parrying anyway so it'll be widely underused...

It was a joke lol. You can thank all the RDM who solo HNMs/Gods for that one. Yeah not sure.. how low is RDM parry anyway in comparison to most jobs? I really do not even try to skill it up on BRD to be honest.

Because we all know Avesta meleed Genbu to death... (No, wait, he kept using Bio on it and running away.) >_>

Parry is E-rated for Red Mage.

Avesta and Grendal are about the only RDMs I've heard of doing anything of that magnitude.

Yeah I know a RDM on our server that can solo quite easily as well. Avesta did not melee Genbu.. but what about Ash Dragon or any of the other retarded amount of mobs he has soloed. RDM/NIN is about as overpowered as any job in this game, if not more so.

Spending hours upon hours DoTing a monster to death is hardly considered overpowered.
