I understand what you are saying, but it just doesnt make any sense to me that this whm would take something when someone is right behind you in points and its the best earring in the game for them. Also, Novia earring is also available to them so...

It's their points they can choose to spend them on any item, those are the conditions stipulated by the system. Sure, you as a whm might have waited for the enm- earring, but this person apparently wanted to cash out for their blm, and they wanted to do it when they had the chance, and they had every right to do so.

To the people comparing the E.body and the Novia/Novio earring, just remember the situation is different. The adaberk can only be equipped by 3 jobs whereas the earrings can be equipped by anybody. So I understand the similarity that you're trying to draw upon but it's not exactly equivalent.

Also, I tried to defend Qbertian (WHM with the earring) because he started building these points from the early days of our sea LS before we even knew what drops were available (in their entirety). It's not some WHM who built points knowing he couldn't get anything of value and then just decided to lootwhore the earring.

I realize people are pissed about the way we handled drops but there is no comparison to sky/HNM LSs point systems. People are still working out sea, there are no 'gil drops' (shining cloth, v. claw, etc.) to burn points on, etc.

Also, the one BLM who brought this up was the only one even close to the WHM in points and would maybe have a concern with the distribution system. Do you really think it's fair to give a BLM with 1 point the earring over a RDM with, say, 40? You have to reward effort in some fashion even if the job isn't ideal for the item.

Umm, I said the one BLM who had legitimate cause for concern brought it up in LS discussion before Map distributed the earring to the highest bidder.

Even if we gave that 1 BLM the earring, no other 'legitimate' mage would be even close to the highest bidder on the next one. We would very soon run into the exact same problem that I brought up: Can you just completely ignore points and give priority to BLMs even if they have literally done 1 sea run?

A temporary fix of giving that BLM (Jiyo fyi) the earring would have only lasted until we got our next earring. We have a boatload of SMNs, WHMs and BRDs near the top of our point list. We would run into this 'job priority' problem eventually, no matter which way we decided to work with that particular earring.

Then all I can say is you have a very selfish linkshell if members would take an item only because they could equip it

Pretty much. There is no perfect way to do it. If you give 100% preference to the job that 'benefits most', you risk pissing people off who can use it but not quite to the best of its potential.

For example, a melee getting sash instead of NIN.

But it's near impossible to give a weighted preference to certain jobs for each item because you would constantly be calibrating it based on perception. Would you give a melee 2/3 point value on the sash where a ninja would get 100%?

You see how stupid this is just when you give simple examples. I couldn't even imagine trying to work with more complex items like Kirin's Osode or whatever.

Or console himself in the fact that he is now closer to the top of the ladder, point-wise. The system is working as-designed: it encourages people to continue to put in effort, it is rewarding people with things that they want, and it is rewarding the people in a manner where a few select people don't hog all the drops. It's a far sight fairer than any other distribution system I've seen.

I agree with that part of a points system.. I have seen items go to people who should never be able to lot them. Some people just are better LS members and attend more shit. Points systems end up rotting alot of stuff though since people do not want to spend points on it.
