The latter, but not in an absolute sense. Are you saying CoP changed everyone into focusing on end game? Or now offered things that arent end game?
here is how I think SE sees itOriginally Posted by BRP
CoP released, yay we have 1.5m subscribers
ToAU released, wow we only have 700kish subscribers, what the fuck happened, wasnt our content good enough to keep people from going to other MMOs?
as septimus states over and over again (his rants are pretty good, we are renting him to other linkshells ventrilo servers for good rants at the rate of 2m gil per hour) CoP is an abortion, for all the good content (limbus, new areas) you have simple bad ideas spread out. If CoP changed focus on anything, it was the players focus on wanting to play this game.
I think a lot of it had to do with the WoW hype. Some people simply hated the game at level 50 because of what it was. Sea or CoP dynamis or any addition to the game wasn't going to help or harm. However, I'm sure a good amount did quit because of CoP, but not that many.
Was there ever 1.5 players? I thought that was only characters.
The slow rate at which SE released CoP missions annoyed alot of people, and once they finally finished it off all people got was a new ring (now a nice ring mind you) and a bunch of crappy NMs that didn't drop shit. That said we all know Limbus fucking owns, but otherwise for endgame CoP really didn't add anything.
I can check both my PLD and my NIN and look at what difference CoP made for me. Sattva Ring, Boxer's Mantle, Ethereal Earring, Homam Legs, some AF+1, (aside from the Ring and Earring everything good really has come from Limbus, the torques off jailers are cool but are only marginally better than a Peacock Charm to be honest) the rest of it is still the same old shit that's been around since Zilart or before.
All MMORPGs are basically going to live and die based off of itemization and CoP failed miserably in offering new and good items for endgame.
Also pop NMs without a 100% drop rate are really fucking lame (read : Jailers, Gration, Swift Belt NM, Rutters, etc)
The HQ/NQ pop item thing is lame as hell too.
It was a brilliant idea, but it should have just been 100% drop rate anyways with a +1 item dropping for a HQ pop.Originally Posted by aurik
I was lucky in a way, because the only time I really got into CoP was after the storyline had been completely released so I got to see the progression in its entirety at once. I can only imagine how hard it must have been to get engaged in what can be quite a complex story with multiple characters off on different tracks simultaneously - when it was being released in dribs and drabs. Keeping the enthusiasm and momentum going while waiting for the next version update must have been quite hard going (and remembering wtf is going on).
I think the cruelest thing in the world can only have been finishing the 8-3 bcnm, seeing the awakening cutscene (which still ranks as one of my absolute favourites in the whole game)... and realizing that you can't fight that yet.
My other personal issue is how PLD tanks to a large part got sidelined by a lot of the CoP missions - but then a large part of my friends list are paladins and I have a kinda soft spot for the crunchy little creatures.
Sea on the whole is an incredibly beautiful zone, and some of the mob types and innovation in what they do is a wonderful break from umpteen levels of crab-exp monotony (take someone new to sea up and watching their reaction to seeing an Aern reraise for the first time is priceless, or UFO stripga) - but it could have been so much more.

And oh...oh...how I LOVED telling people to fuck off the same way people told me to fuck off when I wanted to EXP with them. (I just didn't randomly tell people, mind you, just people I remembered, although it was tempting at times). ENMs were good too...a great way to get some extra EXP for the jobs that aren't too heavy on the invite rate (and the item drops sure didn't hurt either). I kinda wish they had given you a small bonus (like 1000 exp or something), for going in a mission BCNM with someone who hadn't done the mission yet, that would have been a great incentive for helping people I think. Shame PLD wasn't good at most missions like SMN was...I probably would REALLY have hated CoP if they did to SMN what they did to PLD.
Oh, and yar, I meant AV. Doing all that work just to trade and have him not spawn would probably make me take a FFXI hiatus if nothing else would. It seems almost unbelievable even now, you'd think I'd be more used to the idea...
CoP is not bad, but it is very far from good. A series of common sense adjustments would make it so much better to the point where we could ignore things like worthless level-capped zones.
If Square gave me the authority, I could fix CoP in one afternoon.
Sea
-100% drop items on Jailers.
-Make Ix'DRK and Ix'DRG less annoying to pop. (Same with Faith and Temperance.)
-Up the drop rate of torques from jailers, give them other drops as well, maybe something akin to (but not necessarily) abjurations. (You want people to become interested in sea, have Jailer of Justice drop Ridill.)
-Ability to use some sort of teleport system to move through the Grand Palace and the Garden once you beat CoP. Or even the ability to go through the doors that you would otherwise need an escort to do.
-100% pop rate for AV.
ENM
-Make a level 75 solo ENM.
-Make the 60 and 75 solo ENMs drop decent loot. (Worm Mulch, lolz)
-Make the job specific items from the solo ENMs actually useful to each job. (Or someone please explain to me how "MP recovered while healing +3" is equally useful as "Enhances elemental magic" or "Enhances healing magic".)
-Solo player and Fellow ENM just because it would be bitchin'.
Limbus
-Make all zones the same so that you can open all three chests on each floor.
-Don't do anything else to it; it is as close to perfection as humanly possible.
CoP Dynamis
-Shut down the zones, issue an apology, and promise to never do anything like this again.
Grand Wyrms-
-Beef up the loot pool, up the drop rates of existing items, and 100% drop rate on at least SOMETHING. Seriously, if you can fight a mob for 1 to 2 hours and walk away with absolutely nothing (fire crystal lolz) that means that there is something horribly wrong.
General
-Put a NPC in Uleguerand Range that rents chocobos, but only after you are to a certain point in the story. (Bearclaw Pinnacle, Sea, or complete.)
-Make the developers actually play the game with real players so they can see first hand what people think about the game.
Wow, saving the world is hard work.
Umm...wow...yea. I like all those ideas...(except CoP Dynamis, it CAN be fixed, somehow, I know it!)
Shame they would like...never do 99% of what you just suggested. Hopefully ToAU will be good enough so that no one will care about sea anymore anyway. Not that a whole lot of people care now, mind you. I know after that 4 hour Sea "fun" time I had recently, with absolutely nothing accomplished I will be avoiding that zone like the plague (except maybe Limbus stuff...<3 Limbus.)
OH - and a choco woman in Lufaise! That zone is soooo annoying to run through.
Choco in Ule? I don't know lol. That seems a bit TOO easy. However, snowboarding chocobo's for the win ;o.
Another thing: Add some spice to Ule Range, Attowha Chasm, and other non-leveled capped zones. Corses should drop ancient currency. Attowha Chasm should have more NMs. Ect.
How is it brilliant idea if you see a flaw in it? That's exactly the whole point of having NQ/HQ pop item with varied drop rates. That's what's brilliant about it.Originally Posted by Maxxthepenguin
I liked most of what Septimus said. The problems with CoP seem so easy to fix yet nothing is done. The 3 things that stick out to me from almost every post about why people hate CoP are:
1) Bad drop rates
2) Lack of Reward (similar to #1, but mostly referring to things like killing Diabolos in Dyn-Tav gains you nothing really as far as anyone is aware)
3) Bad rewards (items that are not worthwhile ex. "Waking the Beast")
I don't think that's necessary. If they upped the drop rates on currency there and/or made the boss always drop 4 HQs... I think they may become worthwhile alternatives for some groups.Originally Posted by Septimus
Actually, I had a dream the other night that they added cross-country skiing in Uleguerand Range. While you were on skis your movement speed was about the same as mazurka and you were invisible to true sight mobs, but you still could get aggro from other mobs if you did not sneak and invisible.Originally Posted by BRP
They also added a special new dungeon there that could only be entered if you completed Ziart, CoP, and ToAU.
But the point of putting a Chocobo Rental there is that True Sight mobs would still be there for people doing the mission, but the zone would be a lot less inconvenient for people who want to go to Jorm, do ENM, XP, or otherwise make the zone less wretched.
