Low levels it is good, but at "higher" levels I had to use tacos and the damage was sorta gross if I let cocoon drop, but I didnt need defender for the most part. Paladins were definetly tanking better in the 60s thanks to flash and being able to actually block with their shield. We were able to find NIN without waiting 5 hours finally in the 60s and they were obviously vastly superior.

A proof when I was tanking as BLU/WAR, last month. (Right now I'm 75 but I never tank after lv 62)

As a 62 BLU/WAR, I was tanking in the party, because there is no ninja or paladin around.

    Target Mob : Puk
Damage per hit : 60-75, 30-40 with shield proc
    Defense : 607
    Refresh per tick : 3 (Vermil, Auto-Ref, Sanction) + 3 Refresh

PT Setup : BLU, 3DD, WHM, RDM
EQ Setup : Vermilion Cloak/SH/AF/Sword and any SHIELD
    Magic Setup : Auto-Refresh/Cocoon/Jet-Stream/Death Scissors/Magic Fruit/Head Butt
    Food : Tav Taco

Don't forget to Defender + Cocoon yourself BEFORE fighting. Cocoon lasts for 90 sec whlie Defender lasts for 180 sec. You will have to use a Defender once every 2 Cocoons. Defender doesn't lower your DS damage at all, so make sure to have it on at all time. Feather Barrier is not necessary but it's good to have it.

CA + DS swap macro to Scorpion Harness and Life Belt to pull enormous hate at the engagement (4-500 damage ish) then Provoke neatly. Swap to Vermillion and then spamming Head Butt + Magic Fruit, the mob will never go away EXCEPT RNG's WS. Head Butt saves a lot of your HP and it deals decent 50-70ish damage.

If you're losing hate, then 3 options
    1) Jet Stream it ... 150-200 damage instant is a nice way to pull back.
    2) Heal somebody with Magic Fruit, yes this is even nicer but it costs 72 MP.
    3) Warcry (lv 70+)

Exp per hour 4.5-6k/hr. - NOT BAD FOR LV 60ish

    Conclusion
    - Your hate is lesser than PLD but more than NIN. (I have both at 75)
    - Your defense is higher than PLD but sometimes take more damage than PLD due to less shield skill.
    - You will be hit VERY HARD if you DON'T have Cocoon + Defender on.
    - Your MP pull is significantly higher than PLD.
    - You can deal as much damage as NIN as long as you have spare MP to DS.
    - You NEED a RDM.

BLU is a capable tanker for sure but you are very dependant on your BUFF and MP. You definitely need food, BUFF to tank.

Mobs that are capable of dispelling are HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED. Example - Colibri.

BTW, SMN in a party is better than WHM. BLU doesn't have much MP problem as PLD have so we need blinkga to save us a few hits.

    [Endgame] Blue Mage Tanks

With this growing trend of RDM tanks, I got reminded of a time when I read somewhere(forgot where) That BLU is able to tank endgame HNM like Tiamat and Fafnir.

Question is, how is this done and what is the proper equipment and spell sets needed for this to work?

Anything can tank fafnir. Blu cant tank Tiamat nearly as effectively as actual tanks.

    Some newer BLU findings:

Zephyr Mantle is part of Conserve MP trait, can replace Chaotic Eye or Firespit in the combo(or Frost Breath too?).

Exuviation and Wild Carrot are now part of Resist Sleep, any of the 2 paired give the trait: Pollen, Wild Carrot, Magic Fruit, Exuviation.

Wild Carrot seems to cure around 180, Exuviation cured 81.

I've did several hours of research on the combinations of the new spells, and reverified (read: updated) everything on the FFXIclopedia pages on job traits, and all the spells with this information.

Currently there is 26 spells (including Blank Gaze), which I haven't been able to find a job trait combination for. I highly doubt that there may be a combination for them. Tested these 26 spells to see if they fell into one of the known pairings of job traits (as well as Auto Refresh) and paired every spell within these 26. Nothing. Only thing that leaves out is if there's some odd multiple combination of 3+ spells if they do have a job trait associated with them. The external link at the bottom with the sortable spell list is mine.

    Cheers!

    This:

could use an update, but the source has been updated:

Seems Magic Hammer and Mind Blast are lolMND-based nukes (or magical WS spells, if you prefer). This could help to explain why they are doing lackluster damage for folks (the former much more painfully than the latter).

I guess the insane amount of MND on Morrigan's could be helpful here. I don't really feel like gearing up MND and MAB to test these out, but if anyone was interested in trying to get these spells to do good damage, the fact that it uses MND as the stat mod and as the caster stat vs. target stat could be helpful to you. Gogo horrible Mithra MND and CHR stats..

I'm trying to contact the main person that did the translations of the JP -> NA site to see when he will keep the info updated or not. When I originaly did it myself it was through some bit of guessing of what the engrish was, hopefully VZX is still around to do the update so it dosen't look "strange"

Your stats at the time? I'll check mine out later, I think my MND gear has like 69+32 MND (ish).. I'll try some testing after I get home from work. I'm pretty interested in this. Normally I've been doing like 50-80ish with melee gear, so it's not a surprise that it's MND-based.

errant body, lightstaff, p.rope, yigit crackows, tamas ring, moldavite earring, mahtma slops, static earring + mnd spells like maelstorm, vemon shell etc (mostly +mnd spells) I casted memento mori then burst affinity then casted on a goblin gambler out in rolanberry fields. I have a pretty gimp mnd set up but the result is pretty good considering aspir's seem to hardcap around 120 unless there is darkweather/day in effect or alot of + darkmagic skill.

Ok, I just did a rough test, didn't try too hard. This is with Burst Affinity, Logical Etude, Spirited Etude, and Memento Mori all on. No food was active at the time.

MND based rox! I did about 187 damage Magic Hammer without songs, Memento Mori, and with Sword mainhand. I think I had about 69+62 MND then.
