800-1000 sounds about right for normal casting, but did he have a bard minne'ing the whole fight or just for the last one?Originally Posted by Verb

The whole fight he had them cast on him. I believe the bard did Soul Voice at the end, so that may have capped out his defense to 999. So that probably made the difference right there.
What did you have as a gear setup for those #s And were you /NIN?
He said it was with SA, which I would think mean the guy was /THF![]()
Probably going to be a stupid question... but i tried searching for "Bugard in the clouds" and didn't get any results... so thought I'd try asking...
Ok, involving this Monarch Linn ENM you fight a bugard. The bugard takes 3 types of damage, up to a point, then becomes immune to that type. The types are ranged, melee, and magic.
Now I've been asked, and haven't tried this ENM as BLU to really see if Wild Oats, Feather Storm, and Pinecone Bomb really count as ranged damage in this respect... or if they count as physical/melee being a Physical Blue Spell... or if they count as magic damage, as they're still a casted spell...
Anyone tried, and found any sure answer to this?
LOL, people still minne...? Just wow, I bet youre the same kind of blus that main hand martial anelace.Originally Posted by Mertron
Str etudes are infinitely better. Defense isnt even a modifier, all it does is lower the pDIF.. which you can usually max out with normal buffs. People never cease to amaze me with ignorance.

I'd love to know what your gear and spell sets are when you cannonball then. The only mob I've had a chance to test str vs defense on is Kirin (usually cant get a brd for tiamat) and putting minne on produced more damage each time. This also includes tests between using tacos and sole sushi. I'm at 70+66 str for my cannonball set. I could try it again next time we do kirin to compare but for now I'm sticking with minne.
Oh gee, Sole Sushi vs Tacos. 25% Increase in the pDif modifier versus 5 strength. I wonder what will come out on top?Originally Posted by Mertron

To put it in stupid-people talk, Defense is Cannonballs "Attack". Its not a modifier, and adding too much will eventually do nothing.. like adding attack to melee. The same goes for TP in relation to vertical cleave, and its the reason why both have minimal effects on the corresponding spells on weaker enemies.
I'm fully aware that adding too much defense at some point would negate any gains, the question is how much would be too much. I'm not sitting at 800+ def when I cast it, I wouldn't ask a bard to 2hr minnes for me (becasue months ago I actually had a brd 2hr minnes on the second tiamat I did as blu to test damage results and noticed no real noticeable change in damage). In my current build I'm at about 600def with the previously mentioned str totals, in my previous tests lowering that def from minne in favor of str songs produced less damage each time.
Perhaps I was just somehow unlucky when I tested it previously, its not like 4 kirins I've experimented on is a large enough sample to put together great mathematical evidence.
Look at the chart, it depends what youre fighting and what kind of defense youre dealing with. My comment was regarding the person talking about Kimmy and Tiamat, both of which have nowhere near enough defense to warrant minne. Youd have to know the exact defense youre dealing with, its like asking someone to pinpoint exactly how much attack you need for X.Originally Posted by Mertron
That being said, ive never fought anything where etudes didnt vastly outshine minne.
I'm more curious how youre pulling Str+66 off on Blu, because im 70% sure that can't be done.
Easily, and I could get more but alas, I'm broke as a joke.Originally Posted by Celeras
brb lemme check my character and make sure I list everything correctly
Edit: k heres my cannonball set.
Spells: Plasma Charge +3
Heat Breath +3
Firespit +3
Self-Destruct +2
Bomb Toss +2
Blastbomb +1
Cannonball +1
Uppercut +2
Pinecone Bomb +1
Bludgeon +1
I know some of those spells look silly, like "wtf do you have them set for, you're never casting them", but this is my set where I'm casting cannonball only. That's +19 Str, and some blu points left over (cocoon and frightful roar, FR for def down and giving you auto refresh with SD and PC)
Gear:
Foragers +3
Warwolf +5
Galliard +2
Rutters +3
AF body +3
Pallas +9 (could be alky bracers for 11, I'm poor gtfo)
Flame/Rajas +10
Shadow Mask +2
Justice Torque +5 (not an option for most but I got it for my drk)
Minuet +1 (I'm poor, gtfo)
Olibanum sachet (str+2)
That's +45 str right there, +47 if you have alky's, which with spells puts you at the aforementioned +66. My total +str depends on what sword I'm using at the time, which is usually dissector, but I have a lame nq wing sword for +2 that I use sometimes, HQ ones seem to be harder to come by and I unfortunately tossed my ifrits blade long before BLU was a job.
Again, with gil you could get more with better earrings/hands etc, but again, no money.
Nothing ridiculously rare or overpriced
Weapon: Rune Baghnaks (STR+7) sounds stupid, but you only need to engage for a couple seconds then disengage
sub: n/a
Ranged(Outside area: JM Chakram +2 (STR+3)
Ammo (Elvaan): RSE Sachet (STR+2)
Ammo (Hume): RSE Sachet (STR+1)
head: Voyager (STR+3, but does the lack of def cause more hinderance than benefit?)
neck: Auditory Torque (STR+4)
ear1: Triumph (STR+2)
ear2: Triumph (STR+2)
body: AF (STR+3)
Hands: Pallas (STR+9) Alkys if yer a baller
Ring1: Flame (STR+5)
Ring2 Flame (STR+5)
Back: Cerb (STR+3)
Waist: Warwolf (STR+5)
Legs: Galliard (STR+2) lol
Feet: Rutters (STR+3), tarus get RSE2 for STR+4)
that's +53 there....either I missed something, or STR+66 is off....or its including STR from spells.
Yeah you can barely get that using latent items and nation control, and hes still 13 off. Gonna call bullshit, cos nobody is stupid enough to stack nothing but str spells.Originally Posted by NynJa

[edit3] Ok, "That's +45 str right there, +47 if you have alky's, which with spells puts you at the aforementioned +66." So he doesnt even have 66, he just happens to know that its the max you can get. Kudos!
I can't beleive you're stupid enough to not stack str spells. Oh wait nevermind, you are.Originally Posted by Celeras
If you're in a cannonball set on certain mobs like Tiamat, Kirin, or KB, what other spells do you need. Gonna set a healing spell? If you have mages with you, why? Tell me what you're gonna set. If you're a DD job you set yourself up to...do damage. (Edit: also, Iclearly state that there is room for extra spells even with that setup, offhand I think its 8 points, room for a couple spells if you can't live without them)
If I'm doing things other than those three mobs I have other spells set. I do some ls events as blu/whm and have totally different spells set. We're talking a cannonball set only, if you're so confident in STR being so powerful you should try setting some str spells and let support jobs cast their support spells.
Edit: Good job making yourself look retarded, I clearly stated where my last 2 str comes from. Furthermore, +66 ins't even the "max" you can get, read a little closer next time and you'll see that there is still room for improvement.
Oh i dont know, how about Frightful Roar for -10% target defense... instead of 1str? Raise your pDif and weaken the enemy for others at the same time.Originally Posted by Mertron
How about Firespit+Zeph Mantle for +3Str, Conserve MP trait, and shadows if you take hate?
How about Plasma Charge and Acinitic Burst for Auto refresh, and +3 str?
How about Temporal shift/Diamondhide/Healing breeze so you can stun Touchdown on tiamat/heal... and not be completely fucking useless? Still liking that 1str?
You may go now.
Try reading my post again and see what spells I have set.Originally Posted by Celeras
I have Firespit set, and with my leftover points i usually set zeph mantle for the blink and conserve MP. And I specifically mention Frightful Roar. Auto-refresh? Try Roar, Self-Destruct, and Plasma Charge. Thats +5 STR instead of +3, and you dont need a 5 point aoe flash spell.
Having fun yet?
Edit: You could set diamondhide and temp shift on timmy, I've used temp shift before. But guess what? You can also have your blms stun. GASP. And yeah, I'm "useless" without those spells. Try having non-worthless mages nearby to offset you needing diamondhide or healing breeze set.
"You may go now."
Its also more set points, but hey I guess you dont need those since all you do is stack +1str spells, cannonball, then rest till timers are up again!Originally Posted by Mertron
Rock on with your Minnes.
Rock on not knowing a much better spell set for auto-refresh and not having reading comprehension skills. Based on your last few posts I may as well stick with minne and not listen to any of the garbage you have to post.Originally Posted by Celeras
