Yeah, I'm starting to think that the Dissector Crit -> Spell theory is a placebo for using the weapon. I've been manning a Demon/Ifrit's build for a while, and I haven't seen a difference from doing Dissector/Demon. In fact, I'm averaging more damage on Imps I'm told. I really need a parsing program, even tho I abhor them... I'd like to see this Dissector theory proved wrong. Aside from that, the 4/4 Crit Merits definately make a difference that can be seen with or without a program.Originally Posted by Delekii
I've been looking all over for a legendary "dissector vs. blue magic test" thread that another BLU in my ls says he's seen.... but I can't find it... can anyone confirm that they've either seen these tests or better yet show me the thread/results? Supposedly it showed that dissector does work.Originally Posted by Sho
Personally, I also believe that this is a placebo and I'm currently unlocking my recently acquired dissector so I can perform my own tests and publish the results.
P.S. Can you solo skillchain light to unlock the dissector. My brain says "yes" but my heart tells me "no".
Can't unfortunately.Originally Posted by Codernaut

Even if you close the SC with your weapon?
Hm.. I wonder if this means a SAM doing a solo Light SC with 2hour wouldn't count toward unlocking Hagun, either. Not that that'd be an efficient way to do it, but just a curiosity.
Well you can just solo it w/ 500 weapon skills... but I think I'm going to try to close my own light anyway just for kicks.
Now back on the latest topic! Where is my mythical dissector test thread?
BLU cant self skillchain by ending with a WS - they can only WS > CA Spell, and spells dont count toward weapon points. SAM self skillchain counts just fine.Originally Posted by Khamsin
Well, you can... it's a stupid choice however. Ick. Wings.Originally Posted by Delekii
If you're correct about spells not being able to open a self-sc, you'd still get like 3 points for opening a level 3 skillchain... or do you mean that spells don't count at all in skillchain point calculations for these weapons (no matter who's taking part)?
Spells don't count at all, only the Weapon opening and closing. You can do Ick Wing -> Spell -> Sword WS (sword closing for points), but it's a waste of gil, and you can only do this every 1 hour.Originally Posted by Codernaut
anyone can self-SC using those and the Medicated lasts like 3 hours.Originally Posted by Sho
You dont get 3 points for opening level 3.Originally Posted by Codernaut
Its been said umpteen times in umpteen threads, but:
1 points (and ONLY 1 point) for using a WS that does not close a skillchain. If you Solo ws, 1p. If you open a skillchain without closing one prior, 1p.
2p for CLOSING level 1 skillchain.
3p for CLOSING level 2 skillchain.
5p for CLOSING level 3 skillchain.
Whichever is the highest is what you get.
Savage > Cannonball gets you 1 point, the same as Savage without Cannonball, and that is the most a solo blu can get at one time, Ickarus wings aside.
wish they hadn't changed Kraken club usage back when Bluemage came out.
fuck that would be total cheating, Blue has pretty high club skill yes?
that would make ballista even messier than it is allready when fighting a bluemage.
of course not everyone has the K club, just theorising lol
Kraken would be broken for BLU, they were wise to remove it as usable.
Haha, I'd KClub + Genbu's Shield with /NIN. Pwnsauce and awesome.
But it might just have been enough for BLU to fully compensate on the power scale for one of the other 3 jobs they introduced in the expansion.Originally Posted by Tonko
heh, true. Can you imagine a BLU with a Ridill & Kraken dual wield?
Chain Affinity Recast would've been worth meriting at that point.
COR/BRD is the best blm tank assiting job (aside from relic horn bard)Originally Posted by Xavier
also cor/brd is best for smn pt on wyrms if you use a smn pt on wyrms anyway. . . beasts roll evokers roll and ballad. So i dont really get if you were knocking cor or not really.
Also BLU itself is a great job for meriting endgame use . . . i wouldnt see anything either than /whm for event use to help healing and stoneskinaga i guess. a blue mage in my sky ls goes blu/thf for sata vertical cleave its ok damage i guess nothing that could beat ab lm thats for sure.
ninja edit: blu/nin is great for jailer of temperance but hes an easy nm himself < <

500p for Dissector, 300p for trial weapon. 3p for me opening, 5p for him closing, 100 skillchains = both unlocked. This is not correct. 100 skillchains left him with Dissector unlocked, and me with precisly 200p left (at which point we switched and did another 40 chains the other way around).
