    Re: Blue Mage: Job Findings

Heh I do sub /thf anyway and keep Mantle up. I often SATA onto someone else. I also don't really do pick up merits on my blu, so ppl i party with don't mind me tricking onto them. I am also aware of the cast time, but sometimes i have to cast ichi too. Hate isn't usually the issue with me.

But I usually have Mantle up "incase" I do a SA alone. So its not like i have to cast mantle every round. And I usually do that when the mob is near death enough to finish it off with another quick spell. I usually cast 2-3 DD spells per fight. Discerv, FP, and SA VC. Or If i feel like it, I too can do SB SA/SATA Cannon Light.

I used to play Blu/nin, and ive had both parsed. And my /thf edges out my /nin. So it comes down to safety, which I can work around. The melee difference between thf and nin is very small, so it comes down to spells to separate them.

And Yes if taking dmg was a complete non issue, If i didn't have to trick dmg onto a friend, I too would sub /war over thf. And yes in my experience /war would out do /nin. Dual wield II won't make up for Berserk , attack bonus and DA. You give DW and a Suppa with a blu too much credit.

Edit: And yes I realize my /thf edging out my /nin was by a small margin
The only place i find lining up for a SATA a hassle is in Dynamis.

    Re: Blue Mage: Job Findings

Having leveled BLU/WAR all the way to 68, I can honestly say that my damage output was higher as /WAR than BLU/NIN. DA, Berserk, and the attack bonus have a drastic effect on sword DoT (a great chunk of a BLU's total damage pre merit parties) and even though I remained the topDD in my parties through my level, I found my parsers showing a even split of 50% for melee and magic damage as BLU/WAR. The point remains rather difficult to translate at 75 because damage mitigation is so much more important (at 68, I had to switch to /NIN purely to offset the increasing hate earned by FR and later HB) but I would be comfortable wagering that the damage output of a competent BLU/WAR could be higher than a BLU/THF.

My only issue with Berserk/DA/Attack Bonus is: None of this applies to our spells, and people sure aren't inviting us for our Sword DoT, so I don't think /WAR increasing our DoT is a good way to go. /THF > /NIN if you can land SA consistantly, some PTs I have no problem, other times, it's an ungodly nightmare. Depends on camp, or melee that line up well.

sword dot is an important part of BLU damage, and /NIN doesnt increase our spell damage either.

I have no doubt that should they not be forced to hold back, a /WAR would consistently outparse /THF in merit parties, where the mob consistantly turns.

War probably also increases your fstr/wsc by 1 each over /thf or /nin as well.

Melee dot makes up a large portion of our overall damage. A good melee/TP setup is just as important as a spell setup imo. Depending on how you play BLU, melee/WS damage tends to make up for 40~60% of your total damage.

Meleeing is a factor into your overall dmg. But Toth gave the reason why it would not work in merit.

Yup, it 100% depends on this. But since I merit on blu with LS and friends, it always works out great for me.

Yeah, the only problem with this is: "of our overall damage" if all things are equal, i.e: we engage the mob at the same time, other jobs will do more damage, faster, with their DoT than ours (which they should be, seeing as no melee can really do the cool crap we can), like, pulling #s out of my ass here, but in the time a BLU's swords do 10% damage to a mob, a WAR will have done like 15-20%, and have a powerful WS coming up that's affected by our friends Minuet/Berserk/DA. Our overall damage falls short of other properly geared/equipped DD, this is the trade off for all the awesome stuff BLUs can do (typing this while waiting for partner to make it up the mountain to duo Brothers ENM ^^)

It doesnt matter if the other melee will out do your melee. Youre suppsoed to combine your melee dmg with your spell dmg to come up with you rtotal dmg, which is the important end result. If melee dmg was never a concern, becase we know other melee out do it, why not just cast a spell, then rest?

The problem is more along the lines of we all start at 0%TP, and the other melee beat you to 100%, while doing more damage along the way, and let loose strong WS so fast, that we simply can't keep up aside from spamming spells, which empties our MP pools really fast. I'm not saying "BLU can only parse 5% total damage!" but parsing over 25% gets rather difficult with the power of 2H now, let alone BB MNKs and good WARs. And that's with ideal conditions, and fairly ideal gear, which not all BLU have access too that easily.

Hard to do, or gear few have access too wasn't the point people were making.

Of course ppl don't invite us just for sword melee. But do you have any idea how much your dmg contribution to the party would collapse if you never added in your sword melee dmg?

    Re: Blue Mage: Job Findings

And that has no relevance to /WAR increasing our overall damage... nobody is saying to completely stop casting spells as /WAR. If a large (or even, even) portion of our damage comes from sword dot/WS damage, improving upon that is obviously going to increase our over all damage output. You say people don't invite us to a party for our sword dot and whilst you're partially right, you'd get kicked from a party if you never engaged and simply cast DD spells then rested (or you would from my party anyway).

I'm not saying don't have a good TP setup, i'm just saying there's not much we can do to turn our TPing phase from "passable" to "wow look at that BLU go" because of how we're limited, and if our DoT is weaker than other melees DoT, and our Physical Spells don't gain a bonus from Minuet/Zerk/DA, don't expect to be at the top of the parse with similarly equipped melee. We have our place in the game, and we CAN be competative in XP that we do get invites to normal/burn PTs, so it's all good ^^

PT'd in MJSP tonight as BLU/NIN
39/41/19 % is my damage distribution on melee/spell/WS

those 3 things are equally important part for your whole damage

Well here is the things you forget:

    1. We have an A- in sword, far from shitty, meaning good ACC and ATTK (yeah no berserk :/ but really I only notice that difference in weaponskills)

    2. With marchx2 and normal haste gear means that 45% haste v. like 50% that's not that noticeable difference really with the delay of 1h weapons (even dual wielded) usually you never see yourself stop swinging.

    3. Spells stack ontop of our melee DoT

Now the reason I said decent is because of lack of berserk and a higher than 45 base dmg sword. But other than that our DoT is not bad, but if you neglect it, it will be bad and your total dmg will go down.

the reason we are not sought out for merit parties is because many BLU neglect DoT and then become limited by thier mp pool.

p.s. for the record I have pulled hate off WARs with just melee DoT >.>

I assume me means he'd have that much with support of the mages and his haste gear... not just haste gear alone.
But if he DOES mean just from gear... I gotta know how as well.

    Re: Blue Mage: Job Findings

March x2 roughly gives 20% haste max
'Normal' Haste gear roughly gives 18% (Insane one probably 20~21%)

so where the 45 comes from?

It is possible with /drg with that latent haste earring, but that's just wrong. Or he meant refueling?

    Re: Blue Mage: Job Findings

I think he means 45% haste with 25% haste from marches/refueling and 20% from gear, which is not that crazy. I have 18% with homam legs/feet, dusk gloves, swift belt, and w. turban, 21% if I use nashira body. Still, I don't see what getting double marches has to do with blu competing with other DDs, since they'd be getting those buffs too.

Yeah you can always say your blu outparsed random pickup war/mnk/etc noones ever heard of, but who cares, of coarse any dd job can beat any dd job with differences in gear quality/player quality.

Really thou I don't think blu should be anyway near top tier DD just due to the amount of stuff it can do(thou it still seems to be better than thf and nin :D). If anything, I would like to see fixes/new spells in terms of debuffs/support/healing/nukes, and skillchain accuracy increase.

For example, blu has no really useful debuffs at 75 (unless you count stun and flash), and only 3 unique debuffs I think, magic defense down, plague, and terror. Which are great status effects, but the spells themselves are awful due to duration time, recast time, mp cost, casting time on lowing, etc.

Out of all of those blu nukes you learned leveling up, how many were usably effective? Like 0, other than frost/heat breath, eyes on me, and mind blast. Pretty much every magic damage spell other than mind blast could use a reduce in mp cost, and all of them except the 4 listed above and fire spit could use a significant increase in damage. Casting time on breath spells is pretty bad too IMO at 6.5/7.5 seconds, mind blast is 3 seconds for comparison.

    Re: Blue Mage: Job Findings

Agreed on reducing the cost of the magical BLU spells! I would love for some useful (and reasonably costing) magical spells ala the Big 3 to spam on physically-resistant mobs.

And regarding the haste issue, I TP in:

Homam Feet and Legs - 5% Haste
    W.Turban - 5% Haste
    Swift Belt - 4% Haste
    Dusk Gloves- 4% Haste
Suppa - Not Haste but 5% delay reduction from DWing.

It's not hard to reach 45% Haste with Refueling/Haste spell and songs.
