From the looks of it, Yawn has a shorter recast at 60 seconds, compared to Soporific's 90 seconds, but it costs 27mp more (55mp vs 38mp) and the mob needs to be facing you in order for it to work. Yawn is light-based too, correct?

edit: If soporific is tier 2, does that mean that it's like Sleep for priority?
No, soporific is equal with sleep/ga 2/whm sleep. The rest are equal with sleep/ga 1/lullaby.

Soporific is a better sleep, but as you say costs more MP and is dark based. I base your choice on your target more than anything else. If its easy to sleep/resleep, or dark based, use yawn or sheep song. Otherwise use soporific.

This isn't true, Soporific does not overwrite either Sheep Song or Yawn....

As for which to use, Yawn is a gaze sleep, which will miss if your target is turned away. Soporific & Sheepsong are AoE centered on yourself, so like Taru man said, it's situational depending on target.

Yawn Duration is longer than 30 seconds.... It lasted 75 seconds and I assumed a freak resist.

    Re: Blue Mage: Job Findings

They are all tier 1, none of them will overwrite sleep 1 or lullaby, and are all overwritten by sleep 2/repose.

Yawn all thou only really useful for solo or small party stuff due to the line of sight requirement, is accurate as hell. At 75 with an apollo staff, I can't recall being resisted on anything not immune to light based sleep, or an nm that had built immunity. Even with swords out, I find it more accurate than sheep song with staff. I would recommend keeping yawn equipped if you are running around a dangerous/new area solo or duo, it has saved my ass countless times.

Also, repose using the yawn sound effect(AND white wind effect as well..) is annoying. I'm always looking around thinking "who the hell is casting yawn??"

hmm was thinking of messing around with einherjar (sp?) soon and was wonderign what would be the best spell setup for it.
Heard Blu are usefull for their light based sleep.
also what would be a good gear setup for light sleeping?

I kno i kno, asking for another gear setup lol.

    Re: Blue Mage: Job Findings

I recently did tests for duration on all 3 aoe sleeps. 10 casts each on ronf bunnies, no gear, I was 72 at the time. I know it's a small sample size, but here it is.

    Sheep song: 40s, 45s, 60s, 52s, 52s, 49s, 41s, 41s, 38s, 48s, 59s
    Yawn: 1:26, 1:26, 1:08, 39s, 1:19, 1:28, 1:15, 1:109, 1:10, 1:24
Soporific: All 1:29 or 1:30, except for one bizarre cast which only lasted 46s.

Like Tonko said, none of them overwrite each other. Personally I'd go with Sop whenever you can.

so in terms of sleep mass groups of mobs light based would sheep or yawn be better?

is yawn a gaze attack or do the mobs merely need to be facing u, and u can have your back to them?

I rly never played around with these spells except sheep when i got it.

The direction the blu is facing has no impact, however the mobs must be facing the general direction of the blu or you will get no effect. For example, if you have a group of mobs aggroed to a blu circled around him, yawn will sleep all of them.

If you are doing something like einherjar, where the slept mobs have aggro between a bunch of different sleepers and/or are running around, better off with sheep song.

    Re: Blue Mage: Job Findings

How can we select DEF vs STR for cannonball? such as Hume M Boots 3 STR 2 VIT 10.5 DEF vs Blood Greaves 25 DEF

Keep in mind that 25 DEF will be multiply by 1.25 (Tav Taco) and 1.5 (Cocoon) resulted in 46.8 DEF vs 19.6 DEF from Hume M Boots. If Cannonball does use Def/Def ratio instead of Atk/Def ratio, I'd say Blood Greaves won by FAR. The same debate goes with Galliard Trousers 31DEF, 2STR, 2VIT vs Dusk Trousers 47DEF. The 16DEF difference will instead become 30 after food+cocoon. That's a free Jugg off-hand (base on assumption above).

I am curious that if you really do a BLU/WAR full def set, you can push DEF value to 999 easily with Defender + Minne IV + Blade Madrigal. If you're not gimped enough, you should be able to land CB on HNM without using SA, dealing good damage per cast from a very long range. Has anybody ever try this ?

    Re: Blue Mage: Job Findings

SA gives it "critical" status damage which you wouldn't get /war. Also you would most likely not like cannonball acc on HNMs in your maxed out cannonball setup, so you would need to add acc or use acc food. Barring any freak occurance you most likely would be better /thf for cannonball use over /war for the extra def.

edit: the others can give you the math on the def/vit/str gears

I've been using Soporific since my last post in this thread... works great! Soporific then run away through a crowd of NPCs and hope that when they wake up, they'll blunder into Laisaivie or Leonoyne or some other monster NPC

The worst part about Einherjar for BLU is you have to change spells after clearing the regular mobs for the boss and depending on which one you get spell setups need to be different. Usually when I enter I have Actinic Burst and Temporal Shift for sure since both of these spells are unique. Magic Fruit of course and Sheep Song, Yawn. Those are possibly the most important but it is also useful to set Stinking Gas and Frightful roar. Generally for these you will be an AoE enfeebler but if you are heavy on BLM and SMN you could go with an AoE damage tactic with Frypan, Tailslap, Bodyslam, Self-destruct, and other stuff like that for the first set of mobs but as I said the boss will require some quick spell changes depending on what you get.

It would be fun to try blu burning the trash mobs, 20+ blus spamming frypan and whatnot would be epic.

To clarify, people have been calling Soporific tier 2 because it has tier 2 duration. As far as overwrites are concerned, it's only tier 1.

And "all others are tier 1" isn't right either. Pinecomb Bomb sleep barely lasts its own recast time in most situations.

    Re: Blue Mage: Job Findings

To diffuse or not to diffuse past activating it?

Its nice but the recast rly turns me off.

What is the longest lasting Buff that we have?

and even if there was something out side of Ref, Warmup, Metallic bod, Coc would they be used commonly?

From what I have seen in ls events coc and met body have been two spells that seem to get asked for diff.

Diamonhide then an extra quick met body to help out nin tanks.

Diamonhide then coc to help out plds.

Then theres the meripo situations were god damn nearly every mage says "oh can't you just diffuse refueling to save my mp pool?"

So far it seems just having it unlocked and leaving it at that and using it to get that slight edge during events is how I'm leaning.

Unless I'm missing out on something really explosive that will warrant me doing this.

also if your just going to say "There is nothing better to merit" I can simply put the merits into another job and wait till diffuse is the last possible thing I have to merit.
