Should this end up the case, with the recent addition of "Magical Critical Hit Rate", BLM "Potency" merits could take on a whole new level of "wtfness".

Jeez, this topic is old. I searched the thread for 'physical potency' and immediately found flux and nynja right on top of each other.
The first major Potency discussion began around page 116 and then starts again on page 129....and then again a couple times after that.
I guess it's possible it's crit, but I think we would have noticed non-crit physicals critting by now and/or critting physicals critting more than usual. It's likely that it really is bugged and does nothing and we have to bug SE until they fix it or tell us what it does and then fix it, since it doesn't do it enough. -_-
I used to think it did stuff, but now I'm convinced that physical potency doesn't do anything at all... and even if it does do something it's obviously not noticeable, so it's obviously not worth meriting.
Physicals can't crit without SA or CA (with crit effect on tp), PERIOD. Ranged physicals can, Melee physicals can't. If potency is crit chance up, it is more useless than correlation effect up. As for disseverment doing "like 1k+ instead of my usually 600-850 max", that is because it is a 5 hit attack and you are more likely than not going to miss at least one attack (around 3/4 of the time you will miss at least 1 out of 5 hits at capped accuracy). Of course, the rest of the time, you hit all 5, which leads to these spikes that get misconstrued as crits.
Ranged Physical can crit, and without CA? Are you completely certain? It's not that I disbelieve you, but I just don't recall having read that before.
Also haven't read it before.
Yes, I proved it a long time ago. Not sure if I have screenshots, but it was pre-screwing the pdif cap.
I cant find what page the original post I made on the subject was, but I quoted myself on page 120 of this thread.
Back when BLU was still quite early but it had been widely believed that blue magic can't crit by itself, some guy on the BLU forum on alla posted about the fact that his feather storm was doing strange damage on low level bees, and he attributed it to wearing a dissector and being able to crit. Everyone told him he was an idiot and at the time I thought so too, but going back and doing some tests on ranged spells myself, I found it to be true that ranged spells could crit. I still strongly doubt Dissector works, but they can definitely crit by themselves.Originally Posted by Delekii
So, after reading (and or skimming) the entirety of this thread, I have yet to find which is a better body piece:
Vishu's Vest; DEF:47 STR+4 VIT+4 Accuracy+5 Evasion+5
OR
AF Body.
Anyone done any testing on these? There never seem to be any up on the AH on Bismarck
My Gut tells me that the Blue Magic Skill +15 would be greater then the +3 DEF, +1 STR, and +4 VIT from the Vest, but as I said I can't get my hands on one to test.
I'm talking about Cannonball sets, anyone that TP's in their AF Body gets a giant /fail
TP in a scorpion harness until you can get something better, macro af body into spells.
EDIT: Didn't read your last line, use AF body for cannonball, not that piece of crap.
I had thought so. Thanks for the reply.
Not that it'd matter since I've not really done any tests, generally don't have the time to try testing... but the part I've been guessing on "Physical Potency" is the second effect of some of the physical spells... like feather Storm/Disseverment's poison, Sprout Smack's Slow, etc. My guess is that it improves the success rate of the second affect actually working on the mob... or that when it does proc either its duration is extended or the overall effect is more "potent"... as in each merit can make sprout smack's slow decrease the mob's attack speed more than a BLU without merits. Was just a guess, that kind of made sense to me a while back.
If you wanna see my old testing on Physical Potency, go to page 116
...Could +10 attack be easily identified with testing?
+10 attack as in +10 melee attack?
I asked a JP friend about the physical potency merits in the JP version and she says it's "increase the attack of blue magic, +2 per merit."
I'm guessing it's a measly +10ATK.
It's possible. Back when we were testing it we found that a difference of about 3 merits had less effect on pdif (if any) than even changing 15 blue magic skill did. 10 attack would be quite hard to quantify beyond doubt..

has this for physical potency:
物理系青魔法攻撃力
Physical Blue Magic Potency
能力値1で物理系青魔法の攻撃力を+2 します。
One point increases physical blue magic attack by 2.
Don't know if this is direct from in game description or a description assigned by the person who made the wiki page.
How are blm potency merits worded in jp version?
