Got it at 53. You can learn up to 10 levels ahead, although I think that changes for level 60 and higher spells and you need to be within 5 levels.

I've heard lots of people having problems learning Magic Fruit and Self-Destruct. Maybe some spells are harder than others. I had a couple stacks of pebbles trying to learn Fruit and Self-Destruct took 80+ bombs.
Self-Destruct took 5-6 bombs, but damn this Magic Fruit >.> I'll gain a few more levels I guess.
I got Self-Destruct the first time it was used on me...in Newton. I was the level of the spell though, and am starting to think that plays a HUGE part in how easy/hard it is to learn a spell. Here's a tip, unless you're leveling like a madman, I wouldnt stress getting your spells ahead of time. It seriously seems to be a big waste of time. Get the spells 1-2 levels ahead of you, and if its not even important, just wait till you've dinged that level then head out and try for it.

I helped my friend learn it at level 55 on the first Temple Opo-opo we fought in Uggalepih. We then preceded to purge various Tonberries for over two hours before he learned Light of Penance, which turned out to be total shit. Go figure.

From all the abilities I've helped him learn I can quite safely say that the closer to it's level you are, the easier it is to learn. So many of them we've gone to learn ahead of time and wasted hours only for him to go back when he's pretty much at the level and learn it almost instantly. Frying Pan comes to mind; four hours of nothing, goes back a few levels levels higher, 1/1.

I'm sure you don't need me to tell you this but the difficulty of learning some moves can just depend on the mobs. Ahriman's having eight TP moves, Dragons being close to non-existant, having to be on the end of a Vertical Cleave etc. and I bet there's not a single person who had trouble learning Venom Shell from Urganites. I'm not even a Blue Mage and the randomness of it all pisses me off so do yourself a favour and give yourself the best chance by getting as close to the level of the ability before caving in.

Was gonna try and learn this one here soon. What do you mean be on the end of? Heard those mummies were tough. Could a WAR or a NIN (75s) and a BLU duo any of these?

Vertical Cleave is taught by Euvhi's, not Mummies. The reason I listed it as an "it sucks" move (and I almost didn't, just wanted to pad the examples out) is because it hits through shadows.

Vertical Cleave is from Euvhis and fucks shit up.

Blinkable but takes 3-4 shadows (not sure).

I don't think it's blinkable (single hit move), just like Ghrah sickle slash. A few of the Aern TP moves are 4-5 hit so they're blinkable if you have all shadows up, but you'll take damage if you only have 3.

I was 53 trying to learn self-destruct (50) and it was the worst spell for number seen and not getting it. Magic fruit was second. I've gotten spells 9 levels above me first try a few times though.

Light of Penance (58) was the first move used by the first tonberry I saw right beside the outpost, killed it and got it at 54.

I have a few specific questions about BLU in EXP parties, contemplating on coming back to try new expansion.

I have heard or seen of party setups like PLD, COR, BRD, 2 BLU, ???

Is it mainly BLU are the damage dealers along with help from COR and the last spot you open up for a healer or what?

    COR plays what?

    BRD would play what?

I am trying to understand really what BLUs responsibility is in an EXP party as a DD or what, lol.

blu actually tank well so the pld would be leeching. remove the pld (from the game) and add rdm to that pt and maybe a whm or another dd

blu are anything, depending on the SJ. I've had a blu in my pt who swapped from DD blu, to main healer when the RDM had to leave, he went and subbed WHM. With WHM SJ and light staff and other mnd gear, it was healing nearly 400 HP per magic fruit, if we were in a bind he'd do divine seal + Healing breeze.

Not sure how much enmity those gave, but when our shadowless people would get knocked over, he'd just spam healing fruit and hardly pulled hate from it.

A good BLU can do it all with any SJ. I was tanking, healing, stunning, and sleeping in the dunes. I know it was the dunes, but it was fun!

This is so true. SE did a kick ass job with BLU and COR. One can fill most any mage or DD role well (not just half assed) in an exp party. The other does DD & Support well at the same time while promoting party diversity.

I love it. SE just needs to tweak PUP now for the hat trick.

I almost made this same post today, just as a perpetual bump to remind everyone of the awesomeness that is BLU.

Diamond Hide is made of awesome, but I have yet to test out warm up, seems to last around 3mins, giving both acc and eva but I'm not sure on the numbers. Batto/Bulk any idea?

My BLM isn't 37 yet so can't really test that..
I've seen this too with Healing Breeze. My friend and I duo a lot, and we've primarily been duoing as BLU/NIN and BLU/WAR. Recently, though, he switched to /WHM for a party. Now, usually, both our HB's capped at 60 healed. However, with subbed WHM, his capped at 72. Always 72, and didn't go up in the 3 levels we were there. Mine stayed at 60. I'm convinced the healing magic skill has something to do with it.
