So, this is probably going to sound completely retarded, but what, outside of Convert is the reason for subbing RDM to BLU? I'm working on my RDM sub right now, and looking at the spells, I'm just not seeing a ton of added use with it. Extra MP, yes, Convert, obviously, but even Phalanx, which is handy, will only at sub level (45) give 11 points off of every hit.

I guess it's Fast Cast II and Magic Attack bonus? I feel like a complete idiot asking this, as my previous character was a RDM 75, but I am just wondering in what instances I'm going to want to be /RDM as opposed to /NIN or /DNC or something. Sorry for the stupid question.

If meleeing, you get enspells too which add a small bit of damage.

Or while AoE farming/killing trash mobs it has a use pre almace/Woe sword (for killing trash mobs, for Aoe farming It might not be needed but aquaveil phalanx and stoneskin with enhances stoneskin gear helps).

The big reason to be /rdm is for whiskering. Other than that, it can be good for soloing stuff outside abyssea where you'll need convert.

It is for AoE.
- Phalanx can be more then 11 with merits and some equip and this itself is enough to sub /rdm. Few times I lost Phalanx and cocoon during pull in Altepa. I died in several seconds( I was getting no damage with both on)
- 420 Stoneskin
- 24 MAB
- Aquaveil - Personally never used because I never needed it but if you cleave w/o healer it's probably very useful
- Fast cast - useful for everything during cleave. Cut time on buffing, dream flower, charged etc. making whole process few second faster

It is also handy for anything that require AoE sleep as most important thing (some quests, missions, etc.).

its a trade-off, really. 9 times out of 10 i sub WHM on blu since most of our healers suck anyway with responsiveness to enfeebles and such, so it's quite useful. /RDM i feel is very much a solo venture and even then, for the amount of status effects that come your way from abyssea mobs and really in general, I don't see the point in BLU/RDM outside of whiskering.

people place a lot of emphasis on /rdm but when i see it on blu its mostly for ice spikes and phalanx, /whm still gets stoneskin and aquaveil, and I remember getting para by apkallu in misareaux with frigid shuffle and died to para proccing relentlessly while i was /rdm :/

/nin is still pretty useful outside of abyssea where your mp pool cant support constant casts of occultation, and /dnc is not useless, but I certainly wouldn't sub it over the other possible mage subs

tl;dr: try them both and see what you like more.

You need to level either WHM BLM RDM PLD or SCH to 75 if you want to merit enhancing. I don't know where 90 comes from.

Personal suggestion, level BLM to 75, gain ability to proc a bunch of stuff.

I noted 75 there. I should have removed the 90, though honestly if I'm taking something to 75 I may as well spend another few hours in the party and just get it to 90. I mean, come on.
