Huh?
OK, I can see how some physical spells have lower/higher attack bonus than the others, but how can you tell that they have lower/higher fTP? There isn't much of methods to play around with your blue attack right?

Byrthnoth found that the first hit after wiping Utsusemi on WS uses the WS-specific fTP, which means the remaining hits could still be 1fTP.
May have been other methods to the testing, will have to ask tomorrow.
Well, the indication that the damage is lower than expected could imply:
1. the fTP is lower than 1.0
2. the innate attack is lower than simply pDIF of blue attack/mob defense
3. 1&2 at the same time.
In order to isolate the possibility to 1 or 2, then capped pDIF on blu attack is necessary on subsequent hits
Hmmm, for a low attack spell, this kind of mob seems hard to find.
- The mob must absorb the 1st hit
- You must be sure the mob must die with 1 and not more subsequent hit land.
WHM gob couldn't provide a 100% guarantee that the 1st hit will be absorbed
Yagudo NIN with utsusemi appears at higher level, making the HP pool larger and we probably not able to 1 shot it with 2nd hit.
I've not tested Asuran Claws myself (since I only test spells I feel are worthwhile using), but I can tell you that the fTP on blue spells dont follow the same rules as WS.
Goblin Rush for example is easy enough to test as fTP = 1.25 on the first hit. But the average total fTP of the three hits is 3.75. And while I've not tested individul hits using shadows, its seems logical that the other two hits would be 1.25 also (although in theory hits #2 and #3 could be 1 and 1.5, but this makes less sense to me).
Doesn't blink expend one shadow and just take the entire spell multi-hit or not? I seem to recall having this happen with quad. Perhaps I'm remembering wrong.
Nope. Each shadow blocks one hit of a multi-hit attack. The only blocking ability that will block a multi-hit attack wholesale is Third Eye.
Okay, so it was pretty conclusive that the hits after the first got under 1 fTP. You make sure two hits of the spell land, then cast it enough times to get a damage value high or low enough to prove either theory.
The only thing that could change the results of the tests is if the known fTP values or mods on most of our multihit spells are significantly off or if pDIF information is off. Neither of which are more than 1% likely.
I could have sworn this was the case, so I went and played with a gobbie.

Blink != Utsusemi. Utsusemi blocks 1 hit for every 1 shadow, Blink blocks every hit with 1 shadow. Your convictions were correct.
Well, I'm pretty sure that's not how it used to work, at least with weaponskills. I distinctly remember stripping fresh blinks off of Aura Weapons and such with a Guillotine more than once, back in the days of sky exp parties.
Its been at least since blue mage came out. I distinctly remember a blink absorbing all my diseverment hits.
likely you may have missed 2 of the hits and the final was absorbed. it's in the realm of possibility.
It's not, this is how blink works for players and monsters.
Yeah blink has worked like that since the old old old utsesmi update. Which was like what mid 2004?
Blink has worked like that forever and Utsusemi used to also work like that, I think is what you guys mean.
I think they changed how Utsu and Blink interacted with -aga spells, and that's about the only change Blink got I think.
Well a long time ago both utsusemi and blink worked like blink does now well except I think it still always absorbed. I think they even had the same buff symbol. Then they gave utsesmi the ability to block AOEs at the cost of more shadows but also "powerful" or multihit ones could take multiple too. So much raging and rejoicing back then lol
Edit: Occulation shadows work more like utsesmi for some reason though
