Yea I dunno how/if it works. Might be hard to trigger but still possible.

since when do Opoopos aggro ... and last time i checked the words Area of Effect have no correlation to geometry. if u can aggro more than one mob = AoE.

One possibility is if cone shaped spells are cast with selecting a target, and the mob selects it's target, readies the spell, and then is turned. The target of the spell still gets hit no matter what, but the cone shaped area of damage is based on the direction the mob is facing.

If this is the way it functions and PCs can simulate a similar effect, it's very noteworthy because it would allow you target a mob for a cone shaped effect, even if there are enemies behind it, then turn away to, say... a wall and the cone portion of the spell is not an issue.

I think that case is true. If I steal hate on Fafnir (Im a blm) only I get hit with breath out of all the blm, and then the tanks get dmg too. It sounds like it would deal damage to the intended target then additional to wherever it ends up facing at cast.

As for Opoopo, the old ones in Den of Rancor agro. I have no idea why this came up, just felt like addressing it.

Cone AoE's have a flaw, they'll always hit the target of the spell, but the rest of the spell's AoE effect is in relation to the direction the caster is facing. Hence why everyone stands on the feet, and not in front. Let's see how well I can draw this with ascii

[Fafnir] BLM BLM BLM who pulled hate BLM
.../.\
../...\
./.....\ << AoE Cone Breath damage range

So his breath would damage anyone standing in front, as well as the person who is the target of the spell.

Nice try but that's a description error. Wouldn't Byakko be fun if Claw Cyclone was AOE?

Byakko turns to the person who has hate, so the AoE damage is always in one direction. BLU and some mobs do not have to face the target when casting the spell, and as such it can go in two directions.

Nothing to do with what I said. Popsiclestick quoted ffxiclopedia (says so ingame also) saying it was full AOE.

It's not a description error, it just isn't 360'. It's Area of Effect is a directional cone.

Ok, I see your point.

While cone attacks are like this:

.../.\
../...\
./.....\

Claw Cyclone is like this:

...
...
...
...

Different attacks have different degrees on the cones. I thought that Claw Cyclone was 15' or some small number. It might be a 0' attack, couldn't say for sure, just as a general point not all cones are made the same.

lol this argument is funny.

I dont see how anyone can deny that attacks which affect anyone within a certain area whether it be a cone or sphere, originating from the caster, or some other point has an "area of effect".

Any melee who's spent time standing behind a tank while Byakko does Cyclone Claw can tell you they've been raped too. Doesnt matter if its a 40, 100, or 8 degree cone. AoE is AoE.

The types of AoE and the direction of the effects are important to BLUs so that we don't accidentally link things when we're trying to DD. The point of confusion is that some say AoE are are Cones, and some say Cone/Fan but don't mention "Area of Effect" in their descriptions. ^.^v Sorry, but it does matter to BLUs.

Hehe I am a blu too.
I wasn't really picking at the conversation about the actual area affected by the spells in question, I found it interesting. I was just tickled by the fact that it went from that to an argument about the definition of AoE.

Isn't the semantics of the descriptions of each spell, in game, strange?

I was pointing out the description of the spell, while flawed, indicates an area of effect :3

Its really a straight directional attack. I think they should of said:

Damages enemies within a twofold directional area of attack. Damage varies with TP.

Even so... how was a NPC/enmey who was standing from behind the caster hit??

the problem here is /YOUR/ definition of AoE not SEs...

Conal / Directional / Spherical are all differnt kinds of AREA of EFFECT

as opposed to SINGLE TARGETS.

I dont really think there's any point of contention regarding this unless it can be/has been duplicated.

I used Awful Eye a lot after I learned it and I never ran into this sort of problem.

I dont think any of us has ever experienced a "Fails to take effect" message while standing behind a buggard when it used that ability on someone in our party. I think it stands to reason that, if it really did aggro a mob behind you, this is probably not the intended effect.

The "Area of Effect" may be directional, but it doesn't change that the spell affects an AREA not a single target. In which case the description could be clearer, but SE has to translate the game into a number of languages which may not understand the same terms. There is nothing wrong with the description, it is accurate. You do understand that the Area the spell Effects is directional from the caster.

As pointed out a few times, Directional/Cone/Fan AoEs actually have two Area's of Effect. The first is the area defined by the spell depending on which way the caster is facing. (i.e. if you're facing north, this damage is dealt to the AoE to the north) The second 'area' is actually a single target effect on the target of the spell.

For example, You're facing North while fighing a Crawler in CN. You turn your back to the crawler to use SATA CA Spell and you don't want to waste SATA on a melee attack. As a result you are now facing south with the crawler behind you. You cast Claw Cyclone. Claw Cyclone will hit the Crawler behind you to the north ONLY, and the AoE effect will go south (the direction you're facing) hitting whatever you are now facing.
