For some reason I've been listening to some 80s music recently, and I really like it... >_>
Does anyone have any reccomendations of what to download? I'm thinking of The Cure and New Order-esque stuff.

a good list can be found here

The Cure and New Order are both great groups, but if it's 80's music in general, I would recommend (bolded ones you might like):Originally Posted by Gafgarionn

I'm willing to branch out a bit, but I'm mostly looking for something upbeat, and really poppy (which is why I've been listening to some Cure and New Order).
try everything ave said, esp. the bold
also look for;
Talking Heads
Men at Work
Huey Lewis and the News
Genesis
also ave listed styx, so if you're going for more rock stuff try that and the scorpions or something
but it seems like you don't want guitar rock, just pop rock, that's all I can think of off the top of my head atm![]()
Yeah, pop rock preferabbly. I'll check those out, thanks :D
I'm a huge, huge, huge fan of Talking Heads so I strongly suggest you check out some of their stuff. Their "Best Of" album from 2004 has a really good selection of their material so start out with that along with the live movie "Stop Making Sense" to get a feel of them.
True pioneers of music.
U2

ok that's all we know, we only rehearsed the first 12 bars
You simply cannot go wrong with u2 or INXS.
In fact, I am going to listen to "Shine Like It Does" now.
Wow, a music topic I actually know something about.
Some of my favorite 80's bands have already been named. I'd like to point particular attention to Duran Duran (very upbeat, very poppy, which was pretty much the quintessential 80's band. Poison was a little more late 80's/early 90's, but probably the most well known of the glam rock bands. Van Halen is also very good -- check out the 1984 album for their best album.
Culture Club is a little different, but still in the same vein. Michael Jackson's Thriller album is also still pretty damn good, although every album since then has gotten consecutively worse. Thriller, of course, was before he became a white woman.
One of the great things about 80's music is you can find albums which have all the best songs from the 80's on one disc (or set of discs) very easily. You might forego buying indvidual albums (if you actually buy albums, which would be very 80's of you) and find some 'Best Of.' That would let you sample a whole bunch of bands and figure out which ones you like. I would think any standard music store might have a number of such albums.
don't forget Steve Miller Band - his best stuff is before he went full on pop-rock imo though, I like his more bluesy acoustic/light electric stuff. Although I love all his songs.
Wow, this brings back memories. Just sorted my winamp playlist here at work and some of the bands in my 80's rotation are listed as so:
My favorites: (Not including the ones already mentioned.)
U2 and Depeche Mode are a given. So's Talk Talk.
Big Audio Dynamite (Great Band can listen to their stuff all day)
Enlish Beat (Also stuff I can listen to all day, can say this to most all of these on my list, lol)
Eurythmics
Erasure
Cabaret Voltaire
Echo and The Bunnymen
Dead Can Dance
A-ha
Alphaphille
The Alarm
A Flock of Seagulls
Alison Moyet
Bauhaus
Elvis Costello
The Cramps
Crowded House
Kate Bush
Front 242
Flaming Lips
General Public
Go-Go's
Heaven-17
Human Leaugue
Husker-Du
Krafwerk
Love & Rockets
Modern English
Morrisey
Nitzer Ebb
Naked Eyes
Oingo Biongo
OMD
Pet Shop Boys
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
P.I.L Public (Image Limited) (Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols)
Replacements
Squeeze
Talk Talk
Thompson Twins
Ultravox
Violent Femmes (Album: Violent Femmes, Self titled release)
Wolfgang Press
Xymox (Clan of Xymox)
Yaz (Band with Vince Clarke of Erasure and Alison Moyet before she went solo. Album: Upstairs at Eric's)
I grew up on this stuff. Pretty sure I can compile a list of songs and tracks when I get home, maybe I'll host them for you later. Since the flavors you posted for are The Cure and New Order esque type stuff my list has enough to keep you happy. I'm actually gonna re-work this list later with albums from each and or tracks I like specifically. A majority of these bands made music before records only had one good song on them, I wouldn't be too far off the mark in recommending you listen to all of them.
I bold faced the ones you should try out first, If you like those then I'm sure the rest will be to your liking.[/b]

Yeah, I can't believe I forgot some groups like Huey Lewis and the News, Pet Shop Boys and Talking Heads. I'm also suprised no one has mentioned Toto or ZZ Top yet... here are a few more general 80's:
Howard Jones, Kenny Loggins, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Soft Cell, Oingo Boingo, Naked Eyes, George Harrison... and bands that have one-hit wonders:
Thomas Dolby (She Blinded me with Science)
Tommy Tu-Tone (867-5309) (I think that's how it's spelled)
Spandeu Ballet (True)
Michael Sembello (Maniac)
When in Rome (The Promise)
Dream Academy (Life in a Northern Town)
Moving Pictures (What about Me?)
Big Country (In a Big Country)
Falco (Rock me, Amedeus + Der Kommisar)
