Brings me to the biggest point. Square has no forgiveness policy. A lot of people picked their earring before they had multiple 75 jobs, or knew any better. There really should be some sort of one time trade in, or the ability to repeat the BC for another earring at some point.

Replace the Return to Vana'diel program with the Return to 30 seconds before you selected your earring program.

I really don't see why they don't implement "If you drop your earring you can restart the quest". Same with Tamas/Rajas/Sattva; drop it and go kill Promathia again and they should let you pick another one.

that's too easy, you should reset the entire string of missions and do them from the beginning.

That'd be the best way to do it.

Anyone wanna start a petition to ask them to implement that system. Grab 500 names and send it in.

Well how about resetting all of chapter 8, including the hours of running around getting cutscenes after?

Talking from a game design perspective, it's important to force your players to make choices about their character. RoZ earring, CoP ring, Zilart/Promathia-fusion earring are all good examples of this, but also coming immediately to mind is the upper bounds on craftskills, merit limits, racial choice and name.

Forcing players to make these choices gets them emotionally involved in their character; it's a step away from the pure "progress-quest" nature of these MMO stat builders.

Even limited inventory space in other games is used in this manner; when asked about why the stash in Diablo2 (original) was so small, the designers responded, we wanted players to have to choose what to keep and what to sell.

However, FFXI in a lot of ways avoids these lock-ins; even if I take a craft to 100, I can level another craft later at the cost of my initial efforts. Similarly, you can lower your merits in one category if you feel they have outlived their usefulness, though you do not get a refund on your effort. That's why the choice to make these ring/earring quests one-time-only seems so devastating; in a game where you can always decide to change profession, these are the only items which truly lock you in.

I don't see why they couldn't make a similar mechanic to back out of your choice in these cases, perhaps at the cost of backing up the storyline to ZM14 / CoP 8-1 / Bahamut#1 again. That system would prevent people from abusing the exchange process, while still paralleling the other mechanics in this game which allow you freedom to re-choose at the cost of effort.

I actually don't mind the permanence of the choice in these three instances, because they are the result of 3 of the most climatic battles (storywise) in FFXI. Yes, you may have picked the wrong ring/earring (I didn't, I know even though I might want suppa, abyssal was the right choice), but that's not the point of those battles, it's just a fringe benefit. Anyone that did AAX5 the real way will tell you that it's a fun, exciting battle, and CoP was for the most part, an enjoyable journey for me. The earring and ring were just icing on the cake, so I find it hard to complain that I screwed up and picked the "wrong" item when what I found enjoyable was the trials to get that item.

Plus tamas ring is fucking godly in its own right, at least for blms.

I agree with what you're saying but if you picked something other than Suppa chances are in time you will regret it.

I would have regretted not getting Abyssal, it gives everything I need as DRK and nothing I don't.

It doesn't give you DW bonus for when you go drk/nin to actually DD instead of standing around waiting to swing.

QFT, and don't say you don't go DRK/NIN. I've seen you spamming vorpals in dynamis like that. Which brings up another point, you're missing out on the +5 sword skill.
