Yes, it's been a while- but heck, it's the god birds, so it's worth it.

Apkallu are monk types. I spent a while both in a PT whacking these, then later on soloing them on the Nashmau ferry.

First off, Apkallu hate decays over time. Quite a long time. The first month of ToAU, I was in a BLU/BLu/BLU/BLU/RDM (me)/BRD PT whacking the things. We did a level+ worth of them in at around 60th.

Eventually,we got the invincible Apkalluypse Now and had to go zone to get away from the thing.

A few weeks back, I decided to start poking the ones on the ferry. Amped up, they're not bad to practice skills on.

Apkallu begin with Yawn. Then Wing Slap, Beak Lunge, and finally that frickin' Frigid Shuffle. Messing with their accuracy seems to throw off the first three (Yawn frequently misses me with incidental +AGI gear and Blind on them, and that's as a /BLM).

Soloing them with Enspell up, I have literally watched the Enspell damage creep downwards in midfight. 11, 10, 9...from 16's when I started. No funky aggro or attack-on-sight yet, but at my hate level Apkallu will double attack, at times physical strikes will hit for zero (on an EP to 65 mob!) and rarely the bird will even get a Counter off. Debuffs seem to work just fine regardless of hate, however.

Of course, if I ever get the NM, he'll probably aggro me from the deck and beak-rape me like a little girl in a bad hentai movie. But that's what you get for tormenting the wildlife, right?

That being said, I take one on the ferry whenever I can. I want to see how far they go before I no longer can kill one regardless of what I have to do it with.

Anyone tried exping on apkallus yet?

We just finished an... interesting run. We were RNG/MNK/MNK/WAR/BLM/BRD, bunch of friends. We do assault and find new places to EXP afterwards. I had found a ton of Apkallus in the northwest part of the third map of Arrapago Reef - Emperor Apkallus, to be specific - and suggested we EXP on them. They looked easy enough, anyway.

At first they were great. They were like giant pillows, yielding a minimum of 150/kill or so (to a PT of 75s), all VT/IT. They only used the WS Yawn - a Sleepga WS that doesn't affect you if you're not looking at it. It was a bit too fast to stun, so we had the BLM just make a Curaga macro. We also found out they didn't aggro or link.

Eventually the Apkallus started using Beak Lunge, single-target damage+knockback. Later they started using Frigid Shuffle, Paralyga if you're facing it, and Wing Slap, single-target damage+stun. We thought it was weird that they only started using these WSes after about twenty minutes of killing.

Eventually, the RNG had to go. We decided to continue as five. At this point, one of the MNKs complained that his damage was going down, but we figured that was because of the lack of acid bolts. An Apkallu linked - we were surprised, we had never seen it happen. I Lullabied it.

Then our BLM got up when it was at half HP, cast Cure 3 - the first white magic spell of the fight - and found out what it feels like to have Apkallu beak jammed up your ass until it comes out your mouth.

The more you fight Apkallus, the higher their defense goes. One MNK says his punches were 50-60 when we arrived; now they're doing about 10. New weapon skills are unlocked the more you kill them. They don't link at first; their link radius becomes larger and larger the more you kill. They start attacking faster, and I think they get double/triple attack. White magic (but, so far as we can tell, not black, songs or ninjutsu) creates more and more hate.

Case in point: We were noticing that hate was messed up, so we tested this hypothesis. The WAR and both MNKs meleed it down to half HP, with one WS each - Rampage and two Asurans.

I then cast Cure 1.

I pulled hate, and I got raped.

What the hell is up with these things?

A friend said that I could level my 74BST off these by where you escape from Halvung. He said a leech can take out 3 of them, and he killed hundreds of them. I brought up this thread (which was only a couple pages the last time I looked at it) and he said things stayed constant the whole time. He never meleed though, which may have something to do with it. We just got the AC back so I'll be going out to see for myself later.

That's because BST pets "player" status is reset to 0 anytime you release it.

In my 50's, I xp'd off tonberries with opo/torama pets in Temple of Ugg, all rancor moves did 0 dmg to my pets because they have no "hate" to speak of, i'd imagine it to be the same for these guys.

Not sure bout SMN though, I hear SMN's pets are linked to their masters hate, and will take dmg.

That's because BST pets "player" status is reset to 0 anytime you release it.

Yeah, that's true for sure. When I was on my horrid Hototogisu run, Fenrir would take rising damage from grudge everytime my Summoner friend helped out.
