    mythology references in TAU

one of the things i love about FFXI is how they interweave all kinds of cultural references into the game, from esoteric geographic terms (wadi) to foriegn (to me) mythologies (boroka) to literary allusions (jubjub bird). i only recently learned that Lumoria isn't a name S-E invented - it's actually the name of a mythical underwater city.

so far the only thing i immediately recognized in the latest expansion, beyond the obvious and well-known terms (trolls, imps, odin), is the name of Halvung.

Harfang is the name of an ancient city of giants in C.S. Lewis's book The Silver Chair (from the chronicles of narnia series). i did a quick google and apparently there's a harfang reference in WoW too (lol).

anyone know the genesis of the other stuff in the expansion? some of the stuff i found interesting:

    marid
chigoe (probably a bastardization of chigger)
    mamook
lamia (i think i've seen this term in games before, it's probably an old term)
    attercop

Fun fact: you can type just about anything into wikipedia and get an answer:
    Marid
    Chigoe
Lamia (Lamia the Latin word for vampire or witch.)

Attercop is a rip from The Hobbit; was a spider.

    The wonderful thing about Chiggers,
    is Chiggers are wonderful things.
Their tops are made out of rubber,
their bottoms are made out of springs.
    They're bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy,
    Fun! Fun! Fun! Fun! Fun!
But the most wonderful thing about Chiggers is,
    I'm the only one.
    Oh, wait... or not...

    Mithraslaver, Taruroaster, Galkarider, Spinalsucker...

Based on the creativity they demonstrated with the names of Dynamis mobs, I'm pretty happy that they don't.

You think they made the names of Orcs stupid by accident? Or they knew Orcs would name themselves shit like that so they named them accordingly.

You know, it is SE, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I mean, just what I'm doing right now is already a sign of stupidity on SE's part. I missed the boat by 10 seconds, now I'm waiting 20 minutes for the next damn boat, and it'll be another 15 minutes on that boat... ~40 minutes of travel time to get to the new area is just ridiculous, and theres no way to avoid something like this. This stupid once-a-day ring is no excuse to keep it this way either.

It's like they can never add something good without having some problem that's incredibly easy to avoid wrong with it. Just look at almost any aspect of the game.

Storage NPCs? Only full AF! Making them almost useless for 90% of the jobs, since as much as AF usually sucks most jobs have at least one really good irreplaceable AF. Etc.

Galkarider Repretez is my arch nemesis. One day I will finally destroy him to become the undisputed Galkarider in Vana'diel.

The Lamia explanation severely lacks. First off, it's a Greek mythology thang: http://www.loggia.com/myth/lamia.html

There's some snake bastardizations later on. The Libyan Sibyl (^^), by name Lamia, meaning Snake or Medusa.

Then as far as D&D and fantasy goes:

Lamiae are Psyche vampires. They drain life-essence / emotions from people.

If you hang out with goths at all, I'll bet you've met a "Lamia" before. (And a "lilith" etc. It's a popular faux-name.)

And as for making them snake women, charmer's, undead herders... they jacked some of the mythos of the Marilith. http://surbrook.devermore.net/adaptions ... type5.html

Am I the only one that remembers that commercial for insect repellent where the guy goes "Grrrrr! Chiggers!"?

Sorry if chiggers offends anyone for sounding like something else, but every time I see a chigoe I'm reminded of that. And it's hilarious.
