I don't know what will happen on 2012, but if the Aztecs and Mayans predicted it, something will happen.

Yes humans are destroying the environment...that's what the top slot on the food chain tends to do.

I think Katrina and the Florida hurricanes are the main force driving this drivel, which amuses me to no end.

NEWS FLASH: if you develop real estate worth billions at or BELOW sea level, you can expect there to be massive damage at least once a decade.

NEWS FLASH: when the government tells you to evacuate, and you're below sea level, you better fucking evacuate.

NEWS FLASH: never, EVER go on a news camera and say to a national audience that the hurricane you just experienced was pretty weak, because the storm gods will hear and you'll get 2 more headed your way that will destroy you (a shout out to my arrogant florida friends).

Maybe I'm jaded after surviving 6 hurricanes with nothing more than loss of power and a couple of missed school days, but the lack of preparation and general ignorance that plagued both Florida and New Orleans is just moronic.

Something to think about if you haven't read before. Its obviously not real, but a lot of the points made by the so called God are very good and slightly on topic with this thread.
it was alright for the first half then started getting too preachy

Oh and you do know currently space-funding is being cut from the budget left and right yes?

Again I don't doubt the unlimited resources out there. I do doubt humanity in how they handle them.
That was a trajic event. But later came the cold war, where the world experienced for the first time the true possibility of destroying the entire planet with the push of a few buttons. Rather than destroy ourselves we worked out a resolution. In the future there will be bigger buttons that we will have access to, but when our entire species is at risk again I don't think we will be the orchestrator of our own demise. If we were that self destructive then we wouldn't be here discussing this right now, would we?

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

It only takes one "tragic event" to destroy a whole world once you have the technology to do it. And the decision made by the people yesterday does not mean the people of tomorrow will follow the same desicions all the time. Just becuase people were smart enough to not blow each other up during the cold war does not mean people in the future won't do the same mistake as with Japan and blow each other up just becuase Russia and the United States made peace.

I also never said Americans would be the one to do it (though we seem to be the leaders currently), maybe when china becomes the #1 world power they'll push the button, or Russia, or Iraq, or Australia. Again, just because we didn't blow each other up during one war, has no bearing on whether we'd blow ourselves up in another.

My bet's on India/Pakistan or N.Korea. China isn't exactly the big bad communists they used to be; they've opened up quite a bit.

I base my opinions on the actions previously displayed by our civilization. One can surmise that on the whole people will be more intelligent and capable in the future of handling more power than we are today or yesterday (which has been the trend so far). Unless an unforseen event sets our growth back tremndously, I don't see how anyone can say that we will regress in the future to a state more primitive than our own. Basically, I'm more satisfied with the optimistic view of global growth based upon the actions of our past than the simple illusionary fears of an unknown future.

No offense, but you have way too much faith in people.

I was wondering if the post-apocalyptic world will be something like Mad Max or Water World.

I gotta know where to invest my money and inflate...I mean invest in soil or pigs for their farts.

Edit: Yea, I would watch that movie...it seems pretty interesting.

A lack of faith in humanity would only reflect a lack of faith in myself.

Honestly if more people were capable of having thoughts deeper than a puddle, then yeah I would be a little more optimistic. Also I do not see the logic in what you said. I have plenty of faith in myself and my abilites, but when I look at a lot of things that other people do I have very little faith for humanity.

First you say that most others are incapable of deep thought. Then you admit that you don't understand the meaning of my last post. I think you've unintentionally proven the validity of my last statement.

You may feel that having faith in yourself also requires faith in Humanity. I was simply disagring with you. I have faith in my abilites as an individual to make my own decisions and thoughts, and by observing people and or history I have very little faith in humanity. That is my point, maybe I was phrasing it wrong before.

See but the actions displayed show that we makes mistakes. Of course we do, we're not perfect. But if you have a weapon or a meteor or a duck that can blow up the whole world in two seconds, it only takes ONE person to make that ONE mistake, that ruins it for all the "smart" people. Doesn't matter how smart everyone else is, it only takes one idiot to ruin everything.

Then why hasn't it already happened?

We've been in a MAD state since the 50s, and yet, it hasn't happened. Your argument has been used against nuclear proliferation, and every time a new country gets nukes, supposedly we'll all die. Yet it doesn't happen, because nuclear weapons tend promote peace and stablity, believe it or not. India and Pakistan have become much more peaceful since both sides got nukes.

As for destroying the world, any country with enough nukes to do that has elaborate safe guards against "1 idiot" being able to launch. So, it'd take a room full of idiots, and even though groupthink is a big problem, nukes are usually scary enough to overcome that option.

There is always the possibility of it happening everytime some new country gets nukes. Just because it hasn't happend already does not mean that it never will.

Hell, it might not be a country but some crazy, idiotic person that will detonate one somewhere and make the life for people affected by the blast unbearable. Like someone said above, all it takes is one idiot to ruin things for the rest.

    Edit: someone-> somewhere

Edit #2: Take an xp PT, there is always that numbnut that decides it will be fun to pull 3-4 mobs at once. He might have done it on purpose or it might have been an accident, but either way it ruined that period of the PT for the rest of the people.

Now, lets say that the 3-4 mobs were actually nukes and instead of 10mins to reraise and start the PT up agian it actually took a couple hundred years to get back to the normal pace of things. Kind of far stretched...but you get the drift.
