Played? Or replayed?
CT was a great game, and I'm not saying the opposite. But saying there was more great game back than there is now is exagerating imo.

It's only the golden years to you because that was the first time you played those games. You think someone born and raised when PS2/GC/Xbox were the current gen is gonna think that the SNES/Genesis/Saturn games were the best games ever made? I doubt it. It really is mainly nostalgia that makes you think and say that, I'm not saying we all don't get nostalgic (I sure as hell do) but there are great games still coming out, it's hard to make a game that already hasn't been done/seen/played today, whereas back before it was all pretty much new.Originally Posted by SephirothYuyX
I guess the same thing is happening with music and movies too, all you can really do is wait and hope something good comes out, I like old games, I love old games, but I don't like living in the past for them.
Replayed them both. FF7 was alot better the first time around.. so was CT but not to the same degree. FF6 was better than I remembered it lol... I used to think FF4 was better (it still is really good). Just replaying them all made me realize how overrated PS1 games really are.Originally Posted by Kaylia

Pretty graphics w/ rehashed gameplay.
Not for me lol... I played NES first... not SNES. I played FF1, Dragon Warrior and Ultima all for NES as my first RPGs. Those were not as fun/engrossing as FF4 and 6. I didn't like DW(DQ or w/e) as much as I liked FF anyway. My point is that the nostalgia I have is towards shit like Super Mario 3 and the original Ninja Gaiden... not SNES games so much. SNES RPGs just were that much better. The gameplay that developed on that system has not been changed that much since. Just fancy 3d graphics. The difference between FF1 and 4 is mind blowing not just in graphics but in story and just the overall combat. I didn't play FF2 or 3 because I played FF4 as 2 and 6 a 3 lol... I live in the US. I am 27 years old... trust me I am more nostalgic towards shit like Mike Tyson's punch out than FF6 or CT. Those games are just superior... hard to ignore. FF8 and 9 aren't worth wiping my ass with and 10 was nothing special.Originally Posted by Elcura
Oh and the best platformer on PS1 was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.. too bad it isn't a real Castlevania but a hybrid of Metroid (gameplay wise)... lol.. Metroidvania. Super Metroid owns SotN in the face hard and came out well beforehand. Overrated ass lame girly non-Belmont fake Castlevania game. Was really fun, but not as great as Super Metroid, not by a longshot.
It was the same back then, only a minority of games released didn't suck. The rest were garbage. The only difference is that we were more inclined to love those games when we were kid.Originally Posted by Xavier
Make any kids play those "old school" game, and there is a good chance they won't find anything special in those game you consider good. I've 6 sisters between 7 and 18, and all of them started with a different game (one played snes FF first, another ff9 first, one FFX, one KH1, and the other played Mario). Is it really a coincidence they all prefer the game they played first? I don't think so. Of course, I'm not saying your first game is always the best, but generally speaking, you always have the impression older game are better, when it's just nostalgia speaking.
True what was said about new games = better graphics with rehashed storys. Because really, you can only cover the limited genres so many times.
Why is comedy so bring and hard to find now a days? Why does action seem so bleh? because eveythings been redone over and over and over, theres nothing new anymore.
Thats why I think the old school games were the golden age, because eveything was new and fresh. And I can honestly say I can enjoy a lot of the older games more than the newer.
And about the post who said If you grew up in n64/ps1 age or w/e, you would think those games are the best, because they are new for you, and the old games would just be bleh.
Well, I was TOO young for Atari and Intellivision, my first game I played was FF1 when I just turned 6. When I got older my father let me have his intellivision and I liked a lot of those games better than some NES.
Also, I wasnt alive when Andy Griffith, Munsters, etc came out, but I enjoy those shows over new ones.
Really it boils down to taste. However, you cant ignore the fact that the old days really were the golden age, because everything was new, everything was inovative.
If youre a 10y/o right now, and the first game you ever played was the newest Madden 06, that game would be nothing if it wasnt for Tecmo Bowl. And I do know some younger people that prefer the old games over the new ones even though they grew up on the new games.
But like I said, matter of taste, but really, there is rarely 1 or 2 games a year that stand out of the crowd as a new and inovative game.
Its not nostalgia when I cant stand the horrid game play of a crappy RPG when I can enjoy a much better one by replaying MARIO RPG.
No, but it's nostalgia that make you feel like old rpg have better gameplay than new one. There was some bad rpg back then, and there is still some bad one.Originally Posted by SephirothYuyX
I would rather play a new but rehashed version of the same thing, than play the old thing over and over.
I agree with your post Seph, but there really is a certain amount of time before you can't play an old game anymore, no matter how good it is. Even if a game is mostly the same there always a little innovation here and there, as well a good, new story and character to keep me interested. Pretty graphics are great, it makes you feel more intouch with a game although I know it's not a core componant of a game, it sure as hell is a great thing to have, could you imagine if no one focused on graphics? Imagine playing KH 2 in 16 bit, awesome? I think not.
While it does come down to taste the genre of games you started on does have an impact on you. In 10 years do you think people will be saying the same thing about PS/2 N64/GC games, I bet they will...
I've said already it's hard to come up with new ideas/genres for games, I will not blame the devs for that because honestly at this point it is fucking hard to come up with REALLY orignal, innovative games, but I can live with rehashed, long as it's fun
Edit: Holy shit Kaylia is like on the same wavelength as me lol
I think the reason why people think the SNES is the golden age is because of the pure SHIT that Sony allowed to come out on the PS1. Anyone that could afford the licensing (which wasn't expensive) could shovel pure crap out the door, and it happened too often.
Anyways, I don't think people should label eras, because every era has its transcendent games. I know my personal top two are N64 games, but anyone who tries to label the N64 as the golden age should be shot.
I would rather play a completely new game that wasn't a rehash of anything. But nobody is making that.Originally Posted by Kaylia

whhooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMG
They need to make Earthbound/Mother Wii.
Umm... FF4,FF6, ChronoTrigger... just to name a few. Ocarina wasn't that amazing to beat any of those. It did however beat Super Punch Out which is hard to do. :wink:Originally Posted by Lordwafik

But yeah, I dunno why, I never liked it.
Xenogears is gods gift to RPGs. Easily one of the best I've played, and the first time I played it was this year too.
Maybe ill play it again.. havent played it since.. uh, long time ago.
fuck no. FF4 < Ocarina of time. Go play FF4 right now, it sucks. I said it! FF4 sucks. It does not give the same feeling Ocarina gives to meee :DOriginally Posted by Anyway
FF6, played it for a while, got stuck @ the phantom train, then never loaded the rom, and PC formatted so I didnt care. But unlike zelda, i never had the urge to go back and do it alll over again, like I did with OOT, Beat that from start to end like.. 4x now? It's always amazing.
