No way they go to market with $500/600, when the Wii's highest pricepoint yet is $249, and is more likely going to be $200.

You could buy a Wii and an Xbox 360 for the same price as a PS3...ridiculous.
People would rather buy a PS3 anyway, since its the only console that has a gauranteed life of atleast 5 years.

err no. What improvements are left for the next-next-generation of graphics? Not much. The next-next-gen is going to have to pull shit like Nintendo is doing to justify itself.

ORLY? I think you're in for a surprise. XBOX360 games are hardly that impressive, hell it can hardly run Oblivion well out in the open. Next Gen can get alot more powerful, and PS3 will show us exactly how far that can be.

We're still in the early stages of these systems. Look at early PS2 games and look at, say, god of war or RE4. Once devs are used to these systems we will approach the limit of graphical capabilities.

Thanx for reiterating what exactly I just said. I'm stating the end of next-gen is not here, and that PS3 is showing us that graphical enhancements can and still are on their way to improving games. We're hardly anywhere near photo-realistic games.

Yet with a tiny bit of imagination you can extrapolate the state of graphics in 4 years, and from there, can you imagine the step up in graphics possible? It will be negligable. We are going to need actual innovation, not just incremental graphical upgrades for the next-next-gen.

Point is we're NOWHERE close, as much as everyone thinks we are, we're not. So there's no point in debating it.

How much of a difference do you think it will make purchasing the 60GB PS3 over the 20GB? Not saying it'll help game performance, I'm saying for the reason they made the two different memory systems in the first place. The 60GB PS3 better have some serious pros under their belt to justify the price difference. =(

    Im in Australia.

So I give 3 WTF M8's out of 10 to this pricing scheme.

Xbox 360 came out here 600-800 depending on package (i heared it was 400 US?) , 600 US PS2, they'll probably slap on 800-900 mark for the AU price.

As tempted as I am to import due to it costing the same overall... I've got a ton of PAL games, and getting the new consoles, im sure they're not backwards compatible -and- multiregion.. but still considering the fact KH2 isnt coming here till october, and we wont see FF12 for a long time.. ugh.

Im sick of french and german translations bogging us down to wait 6-10 months.

The first PS3 released will simply be a BETA machine that will break down soon, not all machines but most.

Happened with 360, happens with every new console.

I do agree the new generation will not die, e.g. worn out lens.

God... the things I did to my NES and that mother fucker kept on ticking. Still have it too. That old beast just won't give up. Nintendo atleast makes a quality product. (minus the VirtualBoy)

Edit: Since this post me and the NES have made up and are living together in Arizona still in love.

lol tape.. i've had my ps2 since the first day of NA launch and i've dropped it maybe 15-20 times while it was on / off and i still have never had a problem with it playing games or dvd's. I'm surprised it still works but i have a feeling its starting to die since the disc tray is starting to open and close slower.. but oh well ps3 is around the corner so i hope it keeps on kicking till then.

Games only run as well as their coded. The most powerful machine in the world doesn't matter if the developers can't get the power out of it without spending $100 million+ in development costs.

If your concept of "next-gen" is better looking graphics, then you're in for a lifetime of disappointment. Are games photo-realistic? No. Are they going to get somewhat close on the PS3, potentially? Yes. Does a game really have to look that good to be fun? No.

Case in point, Tetris is still one of the greatest games ever made, comsumes hours of playtime, and by anyones standards has some of the most outdated graphics possible. Why is it still good? Its fun to play. Innovation is what next-gen is going to be about, graphics should be an afterthought.

There is going to come a point where playing a game becomes identical to watching TV, at which time theres no point in playing games anymore.

Innovation in gameplay, not graphics. Its going to take a hell of a lot more than Random Game #5 with hyper realistic graphics to get me away from FFXI.

I've almost entirely stopped playing console games, because they're all the same. Rehashed gameplay with sharper graphics. Its why I want the Nintendo Wii. Its offering the first real "change" in gameplay in the past decade, the first being the jump from 2-D to 3-D. All games are going to look "good enough" this generation for nobody to care what system their on, but if they aren't immediately playable, and fun, and a new experience, then whats the point?

I don't understand people who keep going, "I'm going to get a PS3 because its going to have all these sequals that play identically to the last version but have prettier graphics". I want more now, and Nintendo is posed to give it to me.

And keep in mind, I'm still buying a PS3, because I consider MGS3 the finest game ever made, and I want to play the 4th one. I think Sony ripped off Nintendo by adding the tilt-motion sensor to their controller, but its enough of a change to give me hope that their system will offer a new experience for playing games too.

Posted this in the nintendo thread and realized I should move it to this one lol (though I'm sure ppl on this board read both anyways).

Maybe its been resolved by now, but arent there still two competing formats for the next-gen dvd? Like HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray? Similar to vhs vs beta way back when... It would be REAALLY funny if Sony made the ps3 more expensive in large part because of blu-ray if the market for movies ends up going the hd-dvd route. Sounds like capacity on blu-ray is bigger so probably better for gaming anyways, though I doubt 30 vs 50 gig capacity will matter for a couple years.

Imagine if everyone had bought a ps2 saying OMG DVD and a year later you couldnt find a movie on DVD cause they all came out on minidisc?

I'm sure Sony will pull through, theres only one app for the psp movie format and yet they still make those, but its still an interesting hypothetical in the console wars.

Movie wise we're getting to the point of diminishing returns, the human eye is only so good afterall, and the differences are becoming much less noticeable on the high end.

Edit: found an older article that explains the two formats http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages ... 29058.html

They've (the movie companies) have slowed down production of the PSP UMD movies, because they aren't for the large part selling that well. I read the article on gamespot a while back, and the business isn't making a lot of money. And can you blame anyone for not buying them?

You can only play the PSP movies on the PSP, there is no home UMD player, and secondly, they usually cost as much, if not more than the DVD movies, and come with far less extras (if any) on them.

Theres a reason microsoft wants HD-DVD to win the format war, its a hell of a lot cheaper to switch production from DVDs to HD-DVDs than to Blu-Ray, which requires different technology to create.
