Well, it seems to move every Full Moon and New Moon, it is currently Full Moon so you should check around again to see if you can find it.

good to know, I didn't realize that Sept.. we went around for about 2 hours last night and didn't see it. Does it disappear totally at times?

I think it used to completely despawn after the New Moon when the expansion was first out, but they changed that after the first patch.

When I got Atum's C Wildcat Badge, the hoofprint was in the imp camp in the mire an hour before I started doing assaults. (I was in a party near it.) When I finished the assaults and went to check it for my quest it had vanished and moved a map-square over. It was still New Moon at the time.
