Re: SUPER SMASH BROTHERS BRAWL...Solid Snake! PS3, pssh.

    canceled?

I think it's totally normal for any game to ascend to competitive status. That's just people who like winning taking it to the next level. Some of us enjoy playing at the highest tier of play it's just better that way.

How will online play kill it? Online play didn't kill Halo and it brought about a surge in the competitive gaming level of Halo and Halo2. As a direct result of xbl the numbers at MLG skyrocketed, I remember the events growing especially over the past 3 years to the point they're at now. Every game will have the groups who go the extra mile to bring their game to the top level. Online play simply encourages beating other people as a bigger priority than it was when you were playing with your siblings after school, or friends on a Friday night.

If you quit just because people are good then I guess you aren't good lol. It reminds me of kicking kids asses in halo (i.e. BxRing them in the face or getting a quad shot off) and them just saying "omfg you hacker" and quitting or saying "I have no life". Simply because people are good at the game shouldn't ruin the game, it should encourage you to get better.

Re: SUPER SMASH BROTHERS BRAWL...Solid Snake! PS3, pssh.

cant wait for this to come out, pre-ordered it weeks ago. I'm not too hung up on the online feature, if there is any at all. cause its true, there will be lots of lame bastards out there who will whore out one tactic and that will be that, and besides, the appeal for me of the multiplayer aspect of the game is sitting with your friends and laughing at the obsurdity of it all. the one time I tried anything online on my Wii (Madden 08) I just got mad and even more so cause I couldn't yell at the asshole who was off somewhere kicking my ass.

but more to the point, when I first started playing SB on N64 I started with kirby, then link, then settled in and got pretty darn good with mario. whenever I played it on a friend's GC I by default stuck with mario, curious to see who I make my "guy" in this one

Good thing the WSVG (World Series of Video Games) is canceled!

Seems like Niro is learning a new Tactic, and talking about how other tactics interact with it. It's not one unbeatable tactic that you're up against, if you can't adapt, then yeah, online competitive play isn't for you. Smash won't have "one tactic" that everyone sticks too. The GC version was too balanced for that, and I expect the Wii will be even more so. Practice, learn, adapt, win. Don't QQ. Peach wasn't even a tournament teir character untill a couple months ago, and has recently emerged as being very viable. The game continues to evolve and change as people practice and experiment finding new ways to play and compete.

there will be certain characters that people use, the whole tier system and shit like that.

it's a fun multiplayer party game, and taking it for more than that ruins any of the fun that the game has.

Why not? Ike's already been shown to have pretty much the same B and UpB.
He is not Marth, but he has moves like Marth, just like Roy. Roy wasn't exactly like Marth, but just like Ike, he's very similar. There's no question that Ike is a new Marth, the question is if he's THE new Marth. If he isn't THE new Marth, why not start with Marth?

Marth was my best character, but Ike's still an anime dude with blue hair. I don't give a shit if the original doesn't come back as long as his incarnation is as good as, or better than, the original. From what I've seen, he'll play is pretty much the same fashion, so it's all cool in school if the other guy doesn't come back. I honestly don't understand your fixation. The Zelda/Shiek thing makes more sense.

Eh not really, Peach was and has always been a fairly popular tournament character. I don't know what those kids in that thread Niro referred to were talking about. I've seen tons of Peaches at MLGs and there are pros that use Peach as one of their mains.

Re: SUPER SMASH BROTHERS BRAWL...Solid Snake! PS3, pssh.

I actually thought that the winner of one of the first big SSBM tournaments in Japan was a Peach player? Or was that not true?

Anyway, I honestly can't see why you'd just completely cancel it because online was simply included. That's just more options open to you...options you can choose to ignore. I will enjoy playing with friends who live hours or states away from me, or playing against/with some online people that I haven't met irl, and I MIGHT enjoy playing against random competitive people, like on Pokemon Diamond. So what if I lose? I might learn something, and 9/10 I will have fun. They obviously aren't skimping out on the single-player aspect or the characters to add it, and it still hasn't officially been confirmed yet anyway (I can't imagine it not being online in SOME way at least, not after SM Strikers and that Wifi-connection pic on EB's preorders page). And, you can COMPLETELY ignore it if you want to. The concept of canceling because of that just absolutely baffles me...but oh well. You freed up a copy for someone else.

Just a few months left...this game is gonna take up more of my life than I'll ever care to admit.

So... it's basically an instant air turnip throw which sets up a chain of ground normals to push someone back? I don't understand the name pillar.

well considering that they delayed the game for a whole year, lets hope that they balanced online multiplayer so people dont stick to one tactic.

pillar I THINK is named for the way the attacks come, from the air, from the ground, from the air, from the ground, etc. etc. (i guess something in the air and something on the ground would be a pillar? idk how these things are named lol)

falco's pillar is a reflector DAir affair, and if done right, is inescapable? during certain percentages

peach's pillar is a double slap float-cancelled NAir string that stuns that catches someone in their shield (and you can lock them in it, but not 100%?) or attacks them and basically holds them in place while dealing damage. The fast-falled float-cancelled NAir's knockback is interrupted by the doubleslap (or single) and another NAir is thrown in, etc. etc. It can be shield grabbed I BELIEVE between a doubleslap, or between slap > NAir, so its not a true pillar. the guy (xif) tries to mix it up so people cant time their shieldgrabs all the time, making it a stronger technique.

this case just happened to push the guy back off the ledge, but not all pillars work in that fashion. falco's pillar (as i understand it) allows you to rack up damage without letting the guy get too far away before you go in for a killshot.

DISCLAIMER: im not a pillar whore nor a falco player, and the pillar technique (peach's and falco's) were discovered/created after my SSBM prime (hi ffxi), so if im completely wrong sorry :D but thats a pillar as far as i understand it

    edit: found the definition :D

Pillaring: Two forms of this concept have arisen over the years. The first, its formal definition, involves a Falco player chipping away at an opponents’ shield by alternating between shuffled dairs and his shine attack. The second, more commonly used definition (but actually incorrect) is the actual shine to dair combo where the opponent receives damage.

from smashboards, i guess it doesnt have anything to do with the shape of a pillar~ i wonder why they called it pillaring lol

Your opponent will not know your name or any information about you, and neither of you can send short messages. There will also be no battle records kept for this mode, so whether you win or lose, it doesn’t matter. Just sit back and play.
