wow, this is the perfect example of a game that will sell me the system. The others were just awesome fun. I was never as hardcore as the people here seem to be, but I always had a great time. Every once in a while I would play as Jigglypuff and just do the fall asleep/instant knockoff move the entire match, usually when my friends went for Bowser/Kong (everyone would rotate through all the characters so it changed things up). Annoyingly awesome fun haha.

Theres a combo you can press at the match startup that changes you instantly w/o wasting any time. I don't play Zelda so I don't know it off-hand.

I do admit kirby has one really cheap move which is like the fake suicide with someone in your mouth but i've only done it a couple times vs friends when it was a close match, (plus he said i wouldnt be able to do it).
I like peach and mario/dr.mario also, but you could classify mario as cheap too since like all of his moves are really good.
A friend of mine was really cheap with ganadorf.. the only way i see a character as cheap is if the person does the same move over and over..

Completely agreed. Kirby is the cheapest character on the game and Young Link should only really be used when you start playing to train yourself.

I don't agree with what you said earlier about Pikachu though. I had an old friend who played him and only him since the N64 version and he was pretty much untouchable.

Well N64 and Melee were completely different. My expertise is in N64, been playing for at least 4 years but lost track really. I still play pretty regularly though.

In N64 version Pikachu was #1 char, and if there was a tier system he was alone at Tier 1. His moves have the least down time, his jumps are well above average, and his throws are quick and slightly above average.

Tier 2 would probably hold most of the other players, Kirby Jiggly Yoshi Ness Mario and Luigi for example. And down at the bottom would be the characters with weakest jumps, Link Falcon DK Samus and prolly Fox.

Anyway i would love to talk about N64 version if any of you guys played it religiously. I think im near one of the best, but i cant really say shit unless i actually went to a tourney.

Young Link is my favourite character to screw around with, i'll just throw shit at people the entire match.

its mostly the players that are cheap not the characters.. every char has a weakness so it does sorta balance out.

Used to play as Kirby in N64 and i owned everyone i played to. I liked it a lot, Pikachu and Fox were my headaches ><

As fr Gamecube, i play as Samus > Mario> Game and Watch , i like them botch, cause Samus have both ranged and close combat attacks, also a good armor, so he endures a lot.
As for mario, i just use it to screw around.
Game and watch has weird attacks, but if used in combos, they are pretty nasty.


Oh, and i also heard a rumor, that every char has a special attack on Meele. For example Fox Grabs you and doesnt let you go until you die, so basically if you do them first, you win. A friend told me they do exist, so im looking it up on the net.

That doesn't seem likely, it would be a really dumb thing for nintendo to do, but the clip from E3 looks like they have some super powerful special moves so you might be right. If they did implement something like that I would think it would be hard to use...like a super combo or something? Hmmm.

Sorry, I've been at work, so a little delayed.

First things first, speed kills in SSBM. That's why falco, roy, and samus are lower than their ablities would suggest. Roy is by far the most overrated character. I used him at first, and got constantly owned by the faster characters so I switched to Marth. Marth has 2 advantages over Roy: he's super fast and his moves are their strongest at the further end of the attack as opposed to the closest area of the attack.

My Tier 1 is Sheik, period. A skilled sheik player is an extremely tough nut to crack because it seems like every one of her attack is prioritized, and she has some fucking potent knock out moves. Her only real disadvantage is her average jump, but it's really not a problem.

Tier 2 is Fox, Marth, Pikachu, and D money (Dr Mario). Fox is super cheap and if someone's just spamming smash moves and blaster, you are allowed under the rules to unplug their controller and beat them to death with it. Marth is speed+length, which is pretty deadly. Pikachu, though no where near the powerhouse he was in N64 (a good pika player could destroy the best player for any character other than samus), still has the best recover and decent speed. Foward Smash move is still one of the more potent, and on certain levels thunderbolt is just evil (Hyrule anyone? ). Pika is the best counter to Sheik because he can zip away if Sheik gets you in a combo, and has relatively strong moves to counter Sheik's hit and run attacks (down A is just nasty). D Money, as he's known in my circle, is the slowest character that I'm actually scared of, because he's got some powerful stuff that has priority over most attacks. Be afraid of him.

Tier 3 would include Falco, Peach, Roy, Link...all solid, but each is lacking in one area. Peach is a pretty damn cheap character, but is neutralized by being the 3rd easiest to send flying after Jiggy and Kirby. Roy and Falco are Tier 3 by virtue of having faster counterparts available, and Link is just all around solid, but not powerful enough to stick around with the big boys.

Do not use Gannon/Bowser/DK (too slow), Mewtwo (slow and easy to knock off), Luigi (just...don't), Kirby (nerfed from N64 version, probably the weakest character in the game imo).

Samus is just too slow to be effective, and if you use her energy whip, you're going to get nailed. Captain Falcon is a fun character to play with (he's got alot of speed), but is hurt without a projectile and a crappy jump. Ness would be a fucking awesome character...if his recovery move wasn't fucked up (on Finaly Battlefield and Starfox big ship stages, he's brutal). Jigglypuff is fun, and you'll rack up a nice kill total, but you'll never win. Game and Watch is just too fucking awkward to use without getting destroyed. Young Link is faster than Link, but really sacrifices too much to get that speed, so really shouldn't be used (his wall jump is just a stupid ablity...you'll never, EVER use it in a battle, unless you fell down between buildings on Ness's stage.

My observations from well over 10k vs matches.
