they could use the entire FF universe to expand the game, give us content we are already excited about and would love to see in this world
If there was one thing that I could add in from the previous games, it would be materia. Make materia for certain spells and job abilities- Cure I and II, Warp, Escape, Regen- things that you can get from a sub job and would be convenient. (It would make soloing a lot easier, and each spell materia could have a certain amount of convert HP to MP for the non-casting jobs.)
Espers > Materia. Would be more flavorful, more easily integratable (we have avatars, make them equippable) and cooler. What would you rather have: a stone to toss in armor or a bond with an avatar.
    Glowly stone > Avatars.

Stone's for all, Avatars for SMNs and gimps (barring WHM).
    PSH

You don't summon the esper, you let it dwell in your body, augmenting your strength. Like for example, Ifrit would give str bonus and some kinda weak zerk. Carby would be lolCHR but a nice regen. Something like that.

yeah but if avatars existed, would any job be able to summon them?

just like in that FF6 opera remake Locke:"well taht was useless."
    Sabin: "yup"

Although I liked the Esper system of learning magic in FFVI more than the materia system in FFVII, materia would be easier to impliment.

That and we already have a job that utilizes avatars, no reason to dip into the same well twice.

Well, I disagree there. It would be much easier to implement esperesque stuff into the game and also be a new balancing factor. Here's how I would do it, any avatar you 'learn' would be able to be equipped for stat/ability bonuses. As you use it, it levels to have a more significant impact on stats and give new abilities. Functionally it would be like a subjob, except you can't main it, and the flavor would fit perfectly since we already have the avatars and this just would be like increasing their bonds with you. It also gives people besides SMNs reasons to do avatar quests, expanding original content implementation. I'd imagine materia would just be another damn thing to stuff your inventory with...

I know they always fixed those, for quests, gardening etc, but the event is so short, they could leave it alone for once... Especially since I didn't get to use the trick yet
Sorry to return to this, and for posting here as well as in the stat moogle thread. But since it seems to be a 'fix' that happened in the update i figure it's relevant here too:

    I knew it
Now every time I talk to the moogles with a full inventory, he tries to give me a free chocopass. I did this yesterday on 4 of my characters/mules, then chose to wait, then again today. Before they would offer other things besides chocopass, at random (8/8 is not very random), and waiting 1 day would let you get a rare ex item pretty much 100% of the times (at least for me), now it's a chocopass every time even with wait as long as you have your inventory full...
