Honestly, people should just stop talking about the skill of the player, because no matter what, it's a constant.

Saying Skill>Gear>Race is one of the stupidest things you still hear, because no matter what, a player's skill will probably never, ever change (especially on blm). You either have it, or you don't. Maybe you learn after getting chomped on 5000 times by fafnir that demon's helm+1 instead of mahatma hat/AF1 hat isn't a good choice, but I doubt it. Unfortunately, you can't see a players skill before watching him in action. However, you can get a good idea at how good a blm is by his gear. If a blm has all the appropriate gear (max damage/eleskill/darkskill/enfeebskill/healing/-enmity setups), he's at least mediocre. If he only has max damage, or is missing certain items, you can be assured s/he's a bad blm.

So basically, gear makes the blm. Crappy blms can have good gear, but you'll never see a good blm with crappy gear.

Sad really..I usually notice a bad black mage when they use up all their MP and nuke non~stop. I mean sure a paladin and ninja should be able to keep hate but hell, doesn't stop the Hume blm from dishing out all ~aga spells after one another.

Then again maybethe mob whacking him on the head only caused further brain damage and made it impossible for him to realize that using Firaga 3 and then Thundaga 3 and then another blizzaga made it a death trap.

Then again it "IS" the gear and not the skill

Usually some degree of skill is required for even the simplest of jobs. The only difference is that the best of armor is usually there to make sure the most fragile of ego's don't fall apart. Yeah black mages are nukers, but usually only idiots go for the highest end stuff w/out realizing how it works.

So basically if gear is all that matters, just look at the AH for all the most expensive blm stuff and then see what blm's want on HNM's in dynamis, sea and sky and then that's it. Of course it doesn't mean your a good black mage but just inept one who'd continue to nuke Kirin and wonder why they're doing crap damage

Skill in FFXI isnt exactly how it is used in other forms. Skill in RL is a talent usually. He's got great running skill. This doesn't exactly work in FFXI, since all you're doing is pressing buttons and letting the luck of the roll and mechanics of the game doing all the dirty work for you.

Skill in FFXI is more of a mental thing:
-Do you know what to do in any situation ?
-Are you able to adapt your gear for whats goin on ?
-Are you aware of the personal boundaries set around you ?

An idiot blm with Genie Weskit, Zenith+1, 8/8 HQ staves, who dropped his Wizard Gloves because "they're useless", is an idiot. That's being unskilled, because they are not aware of what is going on around them, or how to truly max out their potential. If you think a BLM freenuking for high dmg is "skill", then you're even dumber than I thought.

People that think BLM is only used for MBs endgame fights suck. BLM is more than that. It's soloing, it's BLM pts, it's knowing your elemental wheel: what spells are good which day. HNMs are just a small part of the BLM job, and they're not why I love playing it.

Soloing and blm pts are boring and not endgame. And Stone/Water spells always suck no matter what day it is.

They're more exciting than HNM fights.

I consider merit parties being endgame, and don't give me "this is an endgame board not a general FFXI board" crap because theres a freaking topic dedicated to meat vs. sushi in merit parties derailments.

And by "What spells are good which day" I meant that blms should know when their grav's will get resisted, when they should and should not be nuking thunder first, when bind won't last, etc. All based on the day of the vana'diel week.

Have you ever manaburned flans? Its really fast paced and you have to be ready to stun a sleepga/ga3 at any moment. I don't even have time to cast stoneskin inbetween kills there so I have to make sure theres space for me to get away from the mob while it dies.

HNMs... wait for melees to get tp. They make a skillchain. I push buttons at the right time. Do damage. Stand around for a couple seconds to reduce enmity. Heal.

    Fun stuff.

white mage and red mage are skill jobs >_> all about managing mp, everyone around you, sending tells to other people about people you hate, all while seamlessly and endlessly keeping mp and buffs up

when your favorite redmage or whitemage is at full mp, you have full buffs on, your debuffs flash on your screen for a second or two, and they're just standing there recieving tells about how you'd like to go on a cruise and dive in the ocean off the deck with no clothes on next to a hot guy... its the mark of a good whm (*'-')

make that shit look easy and people with think its easy (*'-') (even overcuring has a rationale at times, using cure V where cure III will suffice, has reasons you may or may not know )

While I mostly agree with you, I'd say RDM was less skill MORE endurance. A good RDM can endure 3-5 hours of Refresh/Haste/Debuff/Backup Cure and keep it consistant and a bad RDM... well, we all know how that goes.

A more skillful job IMO is probably NIN, PLD, WHM and BST

Calling any jobs in this game as skillful is a joke. Really, there is just so many stupid people that play these key jobs (pld, nin, rdm, whm, etc) that we think people who play them well are skilled.

It's all about knowing what to do in certain situations, as well as endurance, that makes a good player. I wouldn't really call that skill though.

I always thought I was a fairly average RDM until I started partying on WAR at the higher levels. Even at level 70+ it was amazing the number of RDMs who had no clue about enfeebling, let alone anything else that makes a RDM not a waste of a party spot. Too many RDMs ride the refresh train and don't bother to keep their secondary skills like elemental and healing even close to cap. (RDM may not have the highest elemental skill in the game, but I can magic burst and make sure the mob knows it.)

Doing events on RDM requires a lot of endurance, but that is a skill also.

I agree, although I'm still pretty medicore because I've lost all the love for the job (but I do my best those short times I do play it). It's so easy to play RDM, but doing it for a long time requires effort and determination, that and it's a fucking thankless job, no one notices what a RDM is doing, but you'd notice it if he wasn't doing it...

Although, I'm probably doubting myself, I know that some RDMs are plain horrible...

I wouldn't consider BST to be a job that requires skill though. Any moron can take it to 75 with a duo or more, and a greater moron could take it to 75 in a normal PT.

Bst solo can require skill, but the skill is either through tactical understanding or through dealling with miss charms in creative ways. I love beast because of this and that's why I play it. I can push myself to all sorts of levels and I have tons of problems and puzzles to figure out.

RDM is similar in a solo capacity, but is much more expensive and equipment dependent.

    I greatly enjoy rdm though, but absolutely not in an environment where I'm just a refresh whore. I enjoy it because of the wealth of things I can do with it in small groups such as assault or limbus. Of course at dynamis I draw the line because you just turn into a stun/refresh bitch all over again >.>;

People do not understand my love/hate relationship with RDM. I love soloing and being an army of one. I love tanking skill up parties, or farming coffer keys. I especially love Ouryu because RDM have a special strategy there. I hate everything else, because it is refresh-whoredom.

If they made a lot of good solo content (with NPC Fellows), I would probably love RDM again, but they would never do anything like that. Heaven forbid that this game require any personal skill as opposed to getting 5 to 17 other people to hold your hand and do everything for you.
