launched at a similar price if you consider e-bay a retailer.
No I'm pretty sure it launched at around that price in Norway, but then again we have rediculous taxes on everything. I can see the PS3 lauching at... no actually, I don't even want to think about it <_<

Edit: Why would people buy stuff that much more expensive on ebay with it's cheaper anywhere else? I've always thought of ebay as a place to pick up stuff cheap

Buying consoles for tons of money off ebay generally only happens directly after their release. The first shipment is sold out, so people who missed out are willing to pay hundreds more dollars to get a system on ebay rather than wait for more shipments. This is especially true if a system is released close to Christmas.

Because assholes like to buy 5-15 new systems the day it comes out, and then resell them for a 150% markup, just because there has never been a system released that didn't have shortages.

My opinion on the matter though, is that, for the money, I'd much rather own a 360 + Wii than just a PS3, but I know in the end I'll have all 3. I just won't bother with a PS3 until MGS4 comes out.

The thing that Nintendo has going for it...for the first time really since the N64, is that they're launching their system with an absolutely amazing lineup of games. Launching the Wii with a brand new Zelda game (even if it was designed on the gamecube hardware) is going to push a ton of systems. The new controller pretty much means that any game released will be worth trying at least for a little bit, just for curiosity. I'll be waiting in line as long as it takes for the Wii.

Yeah, for the first time since the Super Nintendo days, I feel inclined to buy a nintendo system. Although I'm no hardcore fan of the big Nintendo titles like Zelda, Metroid prime and whatnot, the innovative gameplay this system will bring could certainly be a welcome change from all the rehashed stuff that's been coming out the last few years. If the price is as low as someone mentioned here earlier($200-300) then I see no reason not to buy it.

Reason why people will buy PS3 even if it doesnt play games. Blue Ray. If you didnt know, sony (amoung other manufacturers) and microsoft (amoung others) are kind of at odds with each other over who will release the accepted HD DVD format. Sony has the blue ray, which has went on sell a couple weeks ago iirc. Microsoft has some other format of making DVDs in HD however i forgot the name. At any rate, The PS3 will be blue ray ready with a decent price tag. Blue ray DVD players right now retail for a shade over $1000USD. Microsoft is planning to release an add-on for the xbox360 for their HD DVD format.

I read all this shit in times magazine while my wifey wwas in the Dr.'s office lol.

Blueray and HD wont be a standard for yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaars down the road. New VHS movies are still being made, and DVDs arnt even at their limit yet. What, dula layer can hold 8gb or sumin?

So sure, maybe movies and such will be out on the new formats in a year or so, but itll be nothing a DVD wont have.

Buying a bluray player, is like buying a new house when youve only lived in your previous brand new house for only 2 years.

Basicly Sony says that everyone would buy a PS3 even if they didnt make games for it.

    They really are arrogant assholes.
Blue-Ray player that plays video games for half the price of a normal Blue-Ray player.

    As stated above.

What does a bluray player do, without anything to play? No bluray movies out, and wont be main stream for a very long time. By the time blu ray (and if) becomes main stream, the players will cost less than a PS3.

So why would anyone want to buy something they cant use? Its like buying the newest CPU, but theres not mobo that utilizes it yet.

Plus again, the whole thing about DVDs not going out for god knows how long. What will bluray offer (aside from better compression) that DVD cant? DVD can do quality visuals and sound, will bluray improve it that much? and if it does, that will prob mean youll need a better TV to watch it.

I just may be old fashioned, but damn, sometimes id rather watch VHS over DVD anyway.

What manufacturers are supporting Blu-ray besides Sony? If its just them and a couple others.. then it will go the way of Beta-Max probably. HD-DVD might have more widespread acceptance. Most movies will be released on regular DVD.. then Blu-ray and HD-DVD later. Unless you have a TV that can do 720p or 1080p its not worth it for either. 480p looks fine as it is on a progressive scan DVD player... 1080i is basically the same due to progressive vs interlaced. PS3 coming with a Blu-ray DVD player is a definite perk, but only if you can use it to its full capability. I care more about games, and Sony had next to none playable software from what I read. Mostly trailers.

I gathered it was 50% of the movie studio's on HDD and the other 50% on Blu-ray. I also understood Sony had a few other manufacturers going for blu-ray.

w/e it will be a failure, people are unlikely to buy enough to make it successful without guarntee's that 1 side is likely to win in the long run.

We can criticize all we want, but we're all gonna buy a Wii and a PS3 when they come out.

PS3 on top would mean that the Xbox would take the PS3 w/ it when it burns up in a huge ball of fire.
