I was actually speaking about Ninja's, but I would wear both Defending Ring and Shadow Mantle for both job's. Wow, So you guys have never had a tank die while Tiamat is not in flight? That's impressive..

I could give a fuck less if a NIN wants to use a Shadow mantle while tanking, I just wouldn't do it personally unless I found myself backed up on timers. Even then assuming you're not tanking with gimps next to you one or two hits on you and the mob is gonna pop right on over to any other tanks there.

Have you ever tanked Tiamat? If you have you'd know Tiamat is all about getting double attacked and interrupted and nothing about "timers." Seriously she double attacks so frequently, alot of time skill or timers means nothing, and a rare elegy wearing off/double attack catching you unawares. None of these things are forseeable, hence macroing in Shadow Mantle in wouldnt do shit, because just about anything that kills you on Tiamat is out of your hands.

Plenty of times, everyone what has killed me (at least when I'm not using PLD/WAR, but I haven't done that in ages for Tiamat), has been falling behind on timers or the always lovely "Utsusemi: Ichi has no effect." Outside of the under 10% frenzy anyways, I guess at that point in the fight I would definetly be a fan of shadow mantle <_<;

NINs wearing shadow mantle over Gigant or Boxers need to be shot, you have shadows that eat up attacks for 0 damage, putting on a mantle that activates about 10-15% of the time would be worthless. I've never tanked Tiamat on NIN but Utsu recasts dont even seem that bad when you have 1-2 other tanks to depend on getting hate, plus Tiamat only stays on the ground for about 3 minutes...even when Double Attack eats up your shadows, someone else should have hate if you get hit a couple times....if they dont, your LS shouldnt be killing Tiamat.

we use PLDs for JoP, and my 75PLD has mantle =X

i still say PLDs get tons more out of mantle than NINs

I never said they weren't useful, Defending Ring especially (no reason to ever take that off). Just that personally Shadow mantle wouldn't be my cup of tea if I was blink tanking something. But, I guess like you said, I don't own one so I can't fully ascess how good it is.

PLDs obviously get more use out of a Shadow Mantle then a NIN does, the idea of a NIN tank is to not get hit, and PLD/WARs make their living getting smacked in the face.

good NINs will wear -50% dmg in gear, and do get hit at hnms contrary to popular misconceptions (and for less damage hit for hit than a pld would lol)

shadow mantle is essentially -7-10% physical damage depending on your luck, and allows you to surpass the -50% cap

you really aren't losing much as a NIN using it, our cape selection is pretty lacking

if there were a haste cape i'd definately argue for that tho =x

I think I'm a pretty decent NIN but I'm not sure you can define "good" as Owning a Defending Ring <_< I just like stacking enmity to all hell on my NIN, Being galka lets me get away with not needing to put on much HP gear (I sold my gigant a few weeks ago since I figure I didn't really need the HP for PLD or NIN, High Breath covers most things quite nicely, or Cerb mantle if I wanna be cheap about it)

My views on Shadow Mantle I guess are fucked to all hell cause there are so few on Asura, I think only 2 total (and 0 Shadow Rings), one of the guys doesn't camp Kings or fight Wyrms on a regular basis, and the other guy well... he's not the best PLD I guess you could say.

A haste cape would make me so hot in the pants....

a good NIN in -dmg gear takes less max damage than PLD, but if the PLD blocks a decent amount, say about 50%, it'll even out to about the same damage taken...it just takes a good PLD/NIN to match up tanking wyrms compared to NINs

Roughly 300ish Shield Skill and a Koenig Shield factors into about 42% damage reduction not including in VIT, Defense, or other forms of damage reduction, which would take it down more than that. That's more than most NINs would take with Shadows down (when I say most I mean NINs without Defending Ring).
