Proto-Omega strategy anyone?

Does any LS here hold off on killing Proto-Omega until the timer is almost up so that they can kill the gunpods for more drops? We took him down pretty quickly last night, so I was wondering. Someone in my LS said that after a certain number, gunpods stop dropping items -- is this true? Or do the items get progressively worse/less so that it's not worth the trouble?

Gunpods can drop AH items, AF1+1 items, or chips, not in any order, I've seen all as 1st drops before.
