PS3 FFVII!?

Well, I see their mentality behind not wanting to remake it.

Let's assume SE makes most of their income from the Final Fantasy series. They have several choices:
- Release a new Final Fantasy. You can expect tons of fans to go for this, and possibly aquire new fans in the process.
- Release a sequel to a previous Final Fantasy. You can expect many fans of that game to go for this or buy the previous game too.
- Rerelease a new version of an older Final Fantasy. You can expect some fans (mostly fanboys) of that game to go for this.

These are only my estimations, but if we look at the history of SE, you can see that they have been rereleasing older Final Fantasy games that are cheap to produce. I'm sure they've used these for market research on the success of future remakes.

Now assume the top three choices all cost about the same in production costs. Which would make the most sense to do?

Oh I agree it doesn't make the most sense, but just looking for SE's past says to me they don't only do what's the most sense. Considering they remade other FF games why would you think they would single this one out in particular and say no when so many fans are begging for it?

True that, but it's possible sometime in the far future the cost to remake ff to what you see in the demo won't be that much more expensive. Granted that could be years and years from now, but even the simple fmvs they threw in for FF6 would have cost them tons more (and obiviously the snes couldn't handle it) if they had tried that when they had made the original.

Again I'm not saying it's going to happen anytime soon, just that I believe that it's very possible it could happen somday considering SE's past actions.

What else do you expect from a company who, when they released the very first FF, said it would be the last? Maybe its a good luck charm for them, or some sort of superstition to say every game will be the last of the series

A game/series/etc will never stop being made long as there's money to be had =\ even if it comprimises the game/etcs good name

Screw FF7 and their fanboys, remakes of those 5 games would be sooooooooooooooooo much better.

I still wish they would do a full remake of FFVI. Update it to a full 3-D engine with pretty graphics and rendered cinemas so the fan boys (and girls) will have to admit that it was the best story out of all of them.

Wasn't Nintendo working on it a FF6 remake for N64? But yes, FF6/3 needs to be remade.

I remember back when I was still a wee lad, I used to subscribe to Nintendo Power, and when the N64 was first announced, they had some screenshots of what they said the next generation of Final Fantasy would look like.

They were actually screenshots of a demo that only ran on SGI machines, which I believe was to test the capabilities of what they'd be able to do on the N64. The demo was made using characters from FF6, but I think this was just out of convenience for the artists, not out of any intention to actually remake the entire game.

The video is pretty boring, but you have to remember it's not really meant to entertain you, it's a tech demo, they're testing out what they can do with a new, unfamiliar platform. Also remember that this was 10 years ago, and "sophisticated 3D games" were things like Star Fox, with ships made out of about 10 polygons.

You can see the characters' visual style looks fairly similar to what FF7 ended up looking like on the PSX. I'm sure the situation for this FF7 PS3 tech demo is pretty much identical, just using old characters to test system capabilities, nothing more.
