Such a great series. That's top 10 in my book, easily.

I usually don't have a single favorite of anything, but I make an exception for that series. It's #1 in my book.

No one's said it yet, but Mahoromatic is also fucking funny, season 1 is like an introduction and season 2 is probably the most I've laughed in a while.

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien is great, first 3 episodes shocked me because I hadn't seen a serious drama (in anime form) in a long time, great watch.

They didn't abandon it. It stopped where the novels stopped. It wasn't based off a manga like other anime.

i've heard about 12 Kingdoms but i never picked it up cause i was told it doesn't end. that really pisses me off.

It's not the fact that it doesn't end, it's just there's no "ending." It has 3 major parts, and the last few episodes are just a parable told to one of the main characters. I think the biggest problem with it was is was so damn good people hungered for more and there isn't any (wasn't adapted from a manga or anything.) It's still a 9/10 though; it's like watching an a perfect RPG-style world unfold, one complete with its own mythology and an epic story... I found 12 Kingdoms to be really, really incredible.

Oh, and if the OP or any of you ends up watching Berserk, lemme save your sanity right now...

It was adopted, not from manga, but a series of novels. Good luck translating that and bringing it to the US. =(

I can't stand animes that don't end. By end, I mean that they have an ending, not that they stopped producing episodes and just decided to let the viewer "figure it out". That said:

• Full Metal Alchemist: Good story, well made. There's no reason not to see it, really. It's not mind-blowingly good, but it has the lowest suck factor of anything I've seen.[/*:m:32896]
• The Melancholy of blah blah blah: There are only 11ish of these fansubbed so far, I think, but so far it's had me laughing a lot. The first episode is a brilliant deadpan parody of a lot of stereotypical anime crap which had me rolling.[/*:m:32896]
• Now And Then, Here And There: Why the fuck has nobody else mentioned this yet? You're all miserable failures. (EDIT: Except Shaede) This is one of the most serious, powerful, thoughtful things I've ever watched in any language or format. Warning: Do not watch more than one episode in a 24-hour period or you will be reduced to an emotional wreck.[/*:m:32896]
• Grave Of The Fireflies: See above.[/*:m:32896]
• Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, or most anything produced by Hayao Miyazaki: Many of his movies are kids fare, but not in such a way that adults can't find meaning in them as well. (Kind of like how Pixar managed to make The Incredibles a good comedy for both audiences at once)[/*:m:32896]
• Cowboy Bebop / Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex: You've seen these already, but they belong in this list.[/*:m:32896]

Animes that were good for the first 80% of the series:

• Hellsing: Great music, badass series, but anticlimatic. This might be because it was based on a manga or something, but I don't care. I've watched the sub and the dub, and prefer the dubbed version. The characters must speak in English accents, dammit.[/*:m:32896]
• That one with the giant robot piloted by a guy who is a professional negotiator and wears a tuxedo in a city with amnesia: The fact that I can't even remember the name of the goddamn series probably speaks better than whatever else I could think up.[/*:m:32896]
• Chobits: You can't avoid loving it, but there's a point where enough is enough and you don't really care anymore. Maybe I shouldn't have watched the subbed version.[/*:m:32896]

Have you seen the movie? For some reason most haven't. It's pretty good.

This is a great one. But yes, many have not seen or heard of it.

I dislike this show. I dislike the "child" fan service, it just get terrible in that show. So much so that after reading post it reminded me of a pic off of 4chan, and I took the time to google image search it down.

Really? I didn't feel that it was too heavy. I enjoyed it, watching nearly the whole thing in one day (or maybe the whole thing, who knows, I worked at the store 10 hours a day after all).

But seriously, if you want to put yourself into a comatose emotional wreck from which there is almost no escape, watch Saikano. It's truly one of the most moving and beautiful anime titles I've seen, but at the cost of having a story that gets way down into your gut to rake your insides for the entirety of its passage. But the end of it, Saikano leaves you an empty husk of a human, laying on the floor in a puddle of your own fluids, too beaten and torn to stand up and do anything about it. I'd recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good story and could handle having all their internal organs put through a food processor for its 13 episodes.
